Seventh golf course on the RTJ golf trails - Magnolia Grove. Crossing Course - great layout, fun and challenging. Too bad it was December so we didn't have enough time to check out the short course before sunset. Customer service at the pro shop could be a bit more professional, IMO. We wanted to shower since we are going to be on the road for 3 hours after the round, and before we arrive at our next destination. We were told to get towels at the pro shop. I waited in line, yes, line of 1. There were 2 ladies at the counter, one leaning against the counter with her back facing me (I think it was the cart girl), the other facing me, both were busy chatting away. Great conditions of the course as is typical of the RtJ trail . Cart s did have gps and mine only alarmed if I got close to the greens. Yes , I wish the bag drop off attendant s were more enthusiastic and wanted to clean off my clubs At the end of a round too. read more

Sweet Magnolia Grove "Are you kidding me!" What an amazing part of The Trail we had the pleasure to visit! Played in Dothan at The Highlands and Marshwood courses on the way to Florida and on the way back I couldn't resist. I had played this course a long time ago with great memories attached. I then wanted to share the experience with my son. We had a blast. Purchased the Trail pass which saved a lot of $$ on our rounds. 25 minutes from downtown Mobile Marriott with a view of the ship yards and naval Destroyers on the way. I highly recommend The Robert Trent Jones Trail for a buddy trip or even when your passing through. Priceless golf moments! read more

The golf courses are wonderful to play HOWEVER, DO NOT EXPECT ANY AMENITIES. No towels, no ice ( there is water on course), no range balls ($5), no cart GPS which should be mandatory. Carts are old with squealing brakes. First and last time I'll play. read more

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail - Lively wTer hazard on Falls course. - Golf Near Me - Mobile, Alabama

I live in Mobile, have a RTJ Trail Card, play here often, and will continue to play here, but some shortfalls need to be addressed. Recently there seems to be no one paying any attention at bag drop. Either there is no help or they seem to be very busy on their phones rather than doing the job. Both at dropoff and after the round. Most days I wind up just carrying my own bags onto and off the carts, never mind having anyone offer to clean clubs at the end of the round. Most often I'm just ignored. Any relatively upscale course should provide this service. Rest rooms on the Falls are dirty and some of the toilets don't flush properly. The bunkers are not attended to on a daily basis. Recently some have looked like they haven't been raked in days! Currently they are in the process of removing over 9,000, YES 9000! mature trees all around 3 courses. Apparently one man decided that HE wanted it to be more open and a week later the saws were out. They are working on all three simultaneously and creating occasionally dangerous conditions during play. Every hole looks like the one I picture here. I get that occasional tree trimming and removal are necessary parts of golf course maintenance but I don't understand why that much habitat had to be destroyed and why does Magnolia Grove need to change from a Woodlands course to a Parklands style course?!? On the plus side: Staff in the Pro Shop are always pleasant and helpful. The Marshalls and Beverage cart people are also always pleasant. The golf courses themselves are in excellent shape, challenging and fair. TIP! If you live in Ala. or within 100 miles of any of the RTJ Trail courses and plan to play more than one, BUY THE TRAIL CARD! It more than pays for itself after just 1 round. read more

Well, two great golf courses and great conditions. If I had any questions ( I don't want to say complaints), I would ask why is there no cooler on the golf carts. I prefer to walk but because it was so hot I took a cart. And It was cart path only because of some rain the night before. It's a real inconvenience to park on the cart path and walk back-and-forth because of the size of the fairways. But all-in-all. Great golf. read more

Love playing here. Try to catch the short course every other week. But seems that the tee boxes are lacking a little lately, thinking it might just be the time of year. The crossings and the falls are both amazing!!! read more

Good golf course, found all the greens to thin and crossings course has some serious work to do with the greens. Given the crossings's green issues, would suggest playing the falls and short course. 19th hole food and drinks not bad, but they really need to get the ability to run a credit card tab with the beverage cart. Be forewarned they have no clubhouse access at the Falls turn, nor food or drink mobile app ordering. read more

The short course is one of the prettiest ones in the area. The facilities are great and very clean. The new golf carts are nice. I would highly recommend this course if you are in the area. read more

The Robert Trent Jones golf trail is a project completed by the Retirement Services of Alabama. Running throughout the state and composed of over 10 golf courses the trail is a tribute to the late Robert Trent Jones, PGA golfer and himself a dedicated Alabama native. Magnolia Grove golf course is the Mobile arm of the trail, and its a can't miss stop for local golfers and visiting ones as well. Composed of three courses called the Falls, the Crossings, and Short Course, Magnolia Groves boasts something for every skill and type of game play. The full 18 hole par three "Short Course" is a great way to really dial in distance on the mid to long irons, practice chipping on tiered and sloping greens, playing out of bunkers and finally, putting on some very well maintained greens that make the most dedicated putter shake at some points. Oh, and don't let the name fool you, the Short Course has a couple of 185 plus yard Par 3's! I play this course at least once a month and it has tightened up my game and built up more confidence around the green! The full sized courses entitled Crossings and Falls, boast two different styles of play. If you're a get the driver out on every hole bomber who likes that wide open room to work then the Falls may be the course for you! It definitely has it share of long holes and includes a water feature on 13 of them if I recall correctly, as well as a bunker riddled 18th hole! The Crossings may be for you if you're in the point to point accurate control game, its narrower fairways and slightly shorter length provide a real challenge for those players who choose to tackle it! The clubhouse is nicely furnished sporting a dining room with very good food! The burger is awesome as is the sweet tea! The locker rooms are well apportioned and the pro shop is stocked with whatever your equipment needs may be while on facility. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive so make sure to take care of them! Its my home for the links in Mobile and is one of my favorite places to play! Check it out, if you like it, get a trail card, and play with discounted greens fees and cart rentals! Lastly, being an RSA project, it helps fund hard working retirement plans of state employees on the docks, or state troopers, teachers, and a myriad of others thereby creating a civic good for selfless civil servants! read more

Suffering through a five hour round of golf in 100% humidity due to ineffective oversight by the marshals is inexcusable. Bunkers were almost all unkept in part due to inclement weather, but hundreds of un-raked footprints and divots indicate poor grounds keeping, and for a $100+ round of golf, more should be delivered. A very poor showing, and I can only hope it's an outlier for the RTJ golf trail. I am generously rating it 3 stars because it's a nice tract of land. Course management is 2 stars at best. read more

Let me say this, RTJ golf trail is a great deal for your $ in general. It is hard to find such nice public courses, especially for the price. I played the Short course, Falls, and Crossings during this trip. The courses were over-seeded and very lush in the beginning of February. The Falls was the most difficult of the three, at least for me. There were many forced carries and somewhat on the long side. The par three Short course felt like a regular course as the holes varied in lengths dramatically. The Short course was very well cared for and the condition was PERFECT. Did I say that it was in FEBRUARY? The Crossings was shorter than the Falls. I found Crossings layout a little more interesting than Falls. The Crossings well deserves the LPGA tournament in May. I loved Magnolia Grove so much, I may consider Mobile as my residence once I retire. I highly highly recommend visiting Magnolia Grove. read more

I played the falls course in early fall of 2011. Wow, very impressive. This is a great course for the price. I was a bit overheated since I'm not quite acclimated to the weather down here, so I didn't play so well. The layout is very challenging. I usually play from the middle tee boxes which were about 6700 yards at 135 slope (yeah, it's challenging). This course plays long. It's tough hitting long irons to greens that are all carry. The par fives are no joke either; getting on in two is near impossible for most, so take advantage when you can. They seem to stack most of the yards on the par 4 and 5 holes. The par 3's are manageable. There's not a ton of water on this course, but when there is water, it's in play. There are many blind shots, elevated greens and undulations, making club selection on you approach shots very important. A bad drive guarantee's a lay up because many greens are surrounded by trouble. A short iron may be preferable to a delicate chip or pitch. I am going to be spending a lot of time at this course in the future. They have a full practice facility, though you have to pay for range balls. No complimentary balls here. read more

Edit; 2-12-17 I'm updating my review to include the email I received from the head of golf operations at Magnolia Grove, but am not changing my review rating so as to to best accurately define my experience. The gentleman who contacted me was very apologetic and mentioned that he has since spoken with the employee I encountered below, as well as the golf coaches for the teenage kids who were trying to hit the hawk on the range. Additionally, he also offered me a free round of golf, to which I respectfully declined. If I choose to visit MG again in the future , I will do so as a supporter of local business. Sadly like many of the other courses in the area, by the time in which I am able to play, the courses are already mostly filled up with the same type of spoiled, teenage kids that I'm talking about below. They show no respect whatsoever and are completely oblivious to, or ignore course etiquette altogether. This isn't entirely a problem with the courses themselves around here, but the manner in which they continue to let these spoiled rich kids ignore the rules of the course and disrespect other patrons is a problem, and is bad for business. That's exactly the reason why I find myself on the Eastern Shore or at the beach when playing nowadays. This is not a review of their golf course in particular. All 3 courses are pristine and the facilities top notch. Instead this is a review of course staff who sadly exhibit an extreme blatant disregard and disrespect for the wildlife on the course and those who show concern for it. Because of this, it greatly reduces the overall experience. I decided to go to to the driving range at Magnolia Grove last week with a friend of mine. As soon as we stepped out on to the range, he motioned over towards a hawk perched on a hill towards the right side. As soon as I bring it into view, I see several golf balls go flying past it and a group of teenage boys from St. Paul's laughing and celebrating along with one of the Magnolia Grove course staff, Matthew. Matthew soon walked off as I set my bag and range balls down and proceeded to watch the kids repeatedly try to hit the hawk. After seeing one of them graze the bird shortly after, I yelled out to them that they need to stop, that trying to kill defenseless animals on the golf course was disgusting and not at all funny. About that same time, Matthew began walking back towards us and yelled out to me if everything was ok. I mentioned to him that it was not and the fact that he stood there with those kids, laughing while they were trying to hit the bird, was inexcusable and unacceptable. He poorly tried to play it off as if it was no big deal and lied directly to my face saying they weren't trying to hit the bird, despite having just witnessed otherwise. He was extremely rude and entirely unapologetic and exhibited some of the most disgusting behavior, I've ever seen from any employee at any establishment that I've ever frequented. Shortly after my encounter with Matthew, I called the clubhouse and spoke with a gentleman there, Paul, I believe was his name and explained to him the same story I just told above. He was very apologetic and seemed to be as disgusted as I was by the whole thing. I explained to Paul the reason I've been coming to Magnolia Grove since the course opened decades ago. We have no other place in this town that offers the pristine natural beauty and wildlife that course offers. It is something to be respected and cherished, not to be killed with a line drive shot from a driver 50 yards away by sadistic punk teenagers. I've decided that nearly a week after this incident, I will never return to Magnolia Grove. I've played in many tournaments there over the years, watched the LPGA tournaments there, taken golf classes with school on the course, played multiple times per week for several years, but if this is how they train their staff to treat the wildlife that help contribute to the overall course experience and the customers who have supported the course from day 1, then they can have it. I have fond memories of this place and do not want them tainted with what they have now become. read more

Played the Magnolia Grove Falls course week of Christmas (2010). I had called LD to discuss the best course to play. It was determined The Falls course was best for my game. The Falls course was in awful shape both fairways and greens. Yes, it is winter...but...this is a "professional" course. Traveling from Orlando to Texas, taking this detour for a special day of golf was not rewarding or enjoyable. The Crossings course looked to be in much, much better condition. I will say the club house gave us a little discount. Thank goodness. read more
