Sounds like a great spot right? Right! Unassuming from the outside, it was all business and professional courtesy once you entered through the gates. Here's the thing with aquatic centers. Lifeguards are paramount! We can all imagine a scenario when security and lifeguards are lacking, so to see it in action was incredibly impressive. On the day we went - near the end of our stay, we witnessed an episode where all the whistles blew, lifeguards stood up at their stations and pointed to the spot where someone was struggling in the water. In a matter of seconds, lifeguards converged and basically took care of business. Now these are late teens to early twenty-something kids. And to see this type of urgency, and trained behavior for the safety and security of their patrons was, well - encouraging to say the least. Once we got home it was decided that, based on our first experience, this won't be our last trip to the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center. Well done staff! You came through with stars!

If you didn't listen- you got kicked out. I felt safe with my young kids there that they were being watched by effective guards and other people weren't putting them in uncomfortable positions. We went yesterday and today and there was so much rough horseplay, terrible language and unsafe behavior and no one did anything about it. At one point a lifeguard asked the manager to kick people out and he didn't follow through with it. Today there was a huge intact Mastiff dog on the pool deck- what? I want to love this Kalamazoo institution, but someone in charge needs to not worry about being everyone's friend and start taking action on poor behavior.

There is a zero-depth pool for young kids and another area about 4 feet deep for older kids to swim in, with or without parents. When the weather turns cold, the ice rink is well-maintained and fun for all. I appreciated that they Zamboni the rink halfway through an open skate so that it stays smooth. Two fire pits allow for warming up if your fingers start to freeze. Overall this is a fantastic place to spend some quality time being active outdoors all year round.

I went in to the lessons trying not to get my hopes up as I had been disappointed with other area lessons, but after the first lesson I was pleasantly surprised. The lessons take place in her back yard and she employs several staff members. Brittany and her staff are very professional and give the best lessons in the Portage/Kalamazoo area. My children have participated in her group and private lessons and have been very satisfied with both. If you have children with special needs, Brittany's Swim school does a great job accommodating for all types of students. My oldest daughter is autistic and I am truly amazed how well Brittany and her staff work with her. The schedule is posted each summer in April/May on Brittany's website (www.brittanysswimschool.com) The lessons fill up quick, so if your interested in lessons, it's important to call right away!

FIVE TEEN DOLL HAIRS PER PERSON. Not a bad price if you plan on using all of these experiences in one day of course. but if you're only going for a swim, I find this extremely appalling. considering I only used the day pass for a 5-minute swim outdoors, (crowed with nothing for adults to do) and then a 2-minute swim inside (loved it more as a child ((I used to come here for daycare while my mom worked)) this happened because the bikini I was wearing tied on my neck in the back, apparently this type of bathing suit is completely unacceptable. they offered me a shirt of SHAME. I'm sorry but i would never publicly shame myself like that, i do not find my OWN BODY inappropriate, I'd rather just be in the comfort of my own home instead of enjoying my day. also, there were BUGS!!!!!!! IN THE LADY'S SHOWERS!!!!! FLYS FLYS AND MORE FLYS. god is accepting of all. except if you are wearing a two-piece bikini. all the other people were extremely nice and were amazing. staff could be more welcoming. of everyone. very arrogant Christian's -1/10
