My partner and I, did a quick weekend trip to go enjoy some authentic Cajun food. Robin was the sweetest individual, most knowledgeable, and always had my glass poured so what more can I say? A lot. Our menu was Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, Shrimp Etouffee, and bananas foster. THE GUMBO, I had 2 bowls of this to myself because it was just that good, and going to try my hand out a dark roux this weekend to impress my friends ;) What made our trip even more special, was the fact that we were her last class and she didn't make us feel rushed out! She asked if we had extra time, and when we did we were able to let the gumbo sit a bit longer to seep in those flavors. She even got us back to the city. I feel like I made a lifelong friend, I want to go back and do her brunch class, and I want to learn more about the cajun qusine from Robin. Check her out you won't be disappointed.

What a great class! Robin is fabulous. She is knowledgeable and super fun. We learned how to make gumbo, crawfish étouffée and bread pudding, all while drinking wine, laughing and having a good time! It's a hands on experience, everyone cooks. We all enjoyed our meal out in the garden. I would definitely recommend her class to anyone who wants to learn and have a great time all at once.

Robin's private cooking class was amazing!! Robin is so excited about the food she's cooking and even more passionate about teaching her ways to her clients. The food was so delicious I almost cried (seriously!!!!!)

We had a heck of a great time learning to make authentic New Orleans Gumbo, Etouffe', and bread pudding to die for. Chef Robin is high energy, a total delight, and an amazing teacher! She taught tips on being effecient, food safety, knife skills, and how to have a great time all the while. With her recipes we were actually able to reproduce what we'd learned at home for our friends and family. They were amazed!! Her class was an incredible date night adventure. My sweetie and I can't wait to get back to NOLA and hang out with this fantastic gal learning to make some new cuisine we can add to our recipe line up.
This was an amazing cooking class that was authentic and personable. My boyfriend bought it for me as a present for our 1 year anniversary and it was a great experience. It was just the two of us and Chef Robin and we cooked gumbo, crawfish etouffee, and bananas foster. She was great at explaining everything and providing hands on help when we needed it. We started out with king cake and champagne and went over the recipes. While we cooked we were given the option of enjoying wine or local beers. We started with chopping up all the vegetables and then we were both able to create roux for the gumbo! Chef Robin was very encouraging through the whole process and her passion for cooking and New Orleans food was evident the entire time. While the gumbo boiled we started cooking the crawfish etouffee. Both the dishes had amazing flavors and I definitely left there feeling confident I could try these recipes at home. She even provides print out copies of the recipes so you can replicate the dishes at home. I definitely recommend learning and cooking with Chef Robin! Whether you live in New Orleans or you're just visiting and want to try the local cuisine in a unique way, this experience is for you! read more

One of the highlights of our girls trip to New Orleans was taking Robin's class. It was super fun, very informative and everything we made was beyond delicious. She was so down to earth it felt like we had known her for years. The class takes place in a historic area called Algiers (a $2.00 ferry ride across the Mississippi if you don't want to drive) in a beautiful fellowship hall next to the church and we dined in a lovely little patio surrounded by flowers. What a wonderful experience. You will not be disappointed. read more

This review is long overdue so here goes: On the first week of December 2018, a group of us took a bachelor trip to Nola to celebrate one of the guys upcoming wedding. I did a lot of research on local cooking schools/experiences, as the bachelor is an avid cook/foodie and I could not be happier that we found Robin and Robin's Nest. We booked a private cooking class and it was certainly one of the highlights of our trip. Not only did we get hands on chopping, cutting, blanching, mixing, frying, plating, etc., experience but Robin accommodated every whim we had for the class. I asked her to teach us how to make proper Sazerac and she not only brought the ingredients but fit in a demonstration, we had some food restrictions and each one was accommodated. We spent over 4 hours cooking, learning about the 4 various dishes/sauces, eating, drinking wine, and laughing together! Robin, picked up fresh shrimp, scallops, red fish and soft shell crabs for our class from a local seafood market and the freshness came through. Between Robins awesome and hospitable attitude, her cooking and restaurant experience, the quality of food, the ease of teaching us the various techniques, the quantity of food, the setting, and the price, I can tell you that no other cooking experience in New Orleans even comes close!! The only complaint I have is that there was too much food! We were stuffed by the third dish with another one on its way:) However, that is purely a show of Robin's amazing hospitality! For a unique and privately catered experience, I cannot recommend Robin's Nest enough! read more

A fabulous experience. I went here with a group of colleagues during a recent conference break. We had so much fun! Robin is fantastic. She's knowledgable, talented and just plain fun. We learned to make a roux, gumbo, etouffee, and bread pudding. We sipped wine, laughed and made a great meal! After we took a walk around the adorable neighborhood. World-class dining experience. As a birthday gift I received a three hour tutorial on preparing four seafood dishes with complex sauces under the tutelage of a credentialed professional chef. I began with a shrimp remoulade where I learned the ingredients and techniques for boiling shrimp and making a home remoulade sauce. From here we proceeded to make an appetizer of seared scallops with a beurre blanc sauce. We followed this with a prima piatti of Pan-fried trout in a meunière sauce. We finished with crab cakes with hollandaise sauce. I came to learn about how to make sauces and also learned techniques for preparing seafood. Robin looks over your shoulder the whole time offering tips on technique and selection of ingredients. The result, by my own hand, was on par with the best I've had anywhere. She sen accommodated the disabilities of myself and my date (old joints, mostly). The atmosphere was convivial and fun. The workspace is the community hall of an old church having a hybrid of colonial nd gothic architecture. I was pleased to hear the minister credit Robin's business for helping maintain this historic building. This cooking experience was more intimate and informative than most other commercial cooking experiences I've had and it comes with my highest recommendation. Robin even expertly paired wines with each dish. This experience comes with my highest recommendation. I feel like a more accomplished cook and a more informed restaurant customer. read more

We were in NoLa for a friends 70th birthday and his wish was to learn genuine Creole cooking. We enjoyed private lessons with Robin and she took excellent care with two novices and our friend who is trained. Robin taught us so many things in a short period of time. She started with how to make a Sazerac and then we moved to the kitchen to get to work. Shrimp remoulade, pan seared scallops, pan fried red fish, and finally soft shell crab. An outstanding day. I'd highly recommend Robin - she made cooking fun! read more

Venue was unique beeing in a historical church but more than served the purpose and flow of the class whith its layout. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to have a great time in the kitchen. read more

Meet the Business Owner: Robin M.
A Native New Orleanian, Robin Midgett decided to become a chef when she was waiter at the world reknowned Bayona. Because of her love of food, Susan Spicer encouraged Robin to go to Delgado Culinary Arts school. During 3 years of instruction and over 6000 hours of apprenticeship she joined Clanceys, where Chef Robin learned how to work gracefully under pressure. Chef Robin gained experience and accolades from Chef Rene Bajeux at the original Rene's Bistro & Chef Adolpho Garcia at Rio Mar. Both chefs were great mentors to her. After Hurricane Katrina Chef Robin and her family were displaced to Elizabethton, Tennessee where she opened a successful Cajun Restaurant. After a successful run, Chef found her roots of New Orleans culture calling her home. Once she returned she had an opportunity to share her culinary expertise as a cooking instructor. After seven years of working for others she has now made the move to open her own cooking school which is a complete hands on experience.

We had a wonderful time! Chef Robin Midgett's class doesn't use an audience viewing format. Instead, she invites her students to do the cooking. She teaches, but you do the prepping, the stirring, the seasoning, the burning-your-darn-fingers-on-the-pot. You do all of it. And trust me. It's a lot easier to remember how it's done, when you've actually done it. That day, Robin taught Jackie and me how to make a proper roux. How to not rush the process. How to watch the colors slowly change from blonde to brown to dark chocolate. And how to know how each color should taste in a spicy Cajun gumbo or a creole etoueffe. Then the three of us spent the balance of the afternoon drinking wine, listening to zydeco and using our roux to stir up some of the most delicious dishes I've ever made, or thought I'd be capable of making. And because a culture's traditional food and music are the keys to its front door, in a very real way, Robin left us standing in the warm vestibule of New Orleans. Geoff and Jackie read more

A highlight in NOLA for my 60th birthday celebration was getting to take a cooking class making some authentic NOLA cuisine. A bonus was having Robin as our instructor. She was awesome. She welcomed us in and made us feel like a part of the family. With wine in hand, we donned our aprons and set to our tasks. She explained everything and walked us through each step. Oh, and the wonderful food we cooked. She shared stories, secrets and tips which, unfortunately, made the time fly by. When Robin heard we were in town to for my birthday she invited my friend and me to join her to the French Quarter the next day to celebrate (which was my actual birthday). Robin is a wonderful teacher and more importantly a fun and friendly person who I now call a friend. I have and will continue to recommend Robin and her class to anyone interested in a trip to NOLA. read more

This was our second class for my wife and me with Robin, this one the sauce class. I am a neophyte when it comes to cooking away from the outdoor grill. Robin has unbelievable patience for someone like me and uncanny ability to communicate with different levels of culinary talent. We scratch prepared shrimp with Remoulade sauce, redfish with Meuniere sauce , scallops Beurre Blanc and blue crabs with Hollandaise sauce. The four entrees were divine and we ate everything. My wife and I have already scheduled a special dinner for a couple who are home bound to show off what we learned from Robin. The beauty of Robin's class is we were able to pick the dishes and she tailored the class to what we wanted to learn. Robin is that good. Make that great. read more

Robin was our chef when we attending another cooking school while on vacation in New Orleans. While the school had a set of recipes from which to work, Robin gave her own spin and insights into how to cook with New Orlean's flair. Both my wife and I ended up with a private lesson (together) and Robin not only regaled us with stories behind the history of the food we were cooking, but also was a fantastic host(ess). Both my wife and I had a great time and have reproduced some of the fare we learned about, adding to the enjoyment and value of taking a cooking class on vacation. A great experience and would definitely go again to learn more cooking info from Robin, anytime. read more

Chef Robin created such a memorable night for my wife & I's anniversary. My wife's favorite seafood is scallops which Chef Robin prepared in a most delectable way. She started the night with a brilliant citrus salad followed by the scallops accompanied with oven roasted sweet potato medallions & finished off with grilled asparagus. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, Chef Robin finished off the night with a delicious New Orleans style bread puddin' topped with a caramel praline sauce. I highly recommend Chef Robin for any special occasion. Her charm & knowledge of food made for the most entertaining evening. Thanks Chef! read more
