This dog park in Shirley, Suffolk County, is about 5 minutes from Brookhaven Airport and 8-10 minutes from Smith Point Beach. The entrance is easy to miss--the sign is small and blends into the bushes, so GPS is recommended. There is a grass and sand parking lot with one handicap space. Inside, the park is divided into two fenced areas: one for small dogs and one for large dogs. Each has a double-gated entrance, but the small dog gate is difficult to close and often left open. Some repairs look to have been done by locals with rope, but proper maintenance is needed. Combined, both sections are about the size of a football field. The large dog area has two shade trees, while the small dog area has none. Each section has a few benches. Visitors have left behind toys and bowls, but it's best not to use the water bowls--others have reported kennel cough. It gets very hot here in the summer months. Bringing water in a bowl is recommended. There are only two trash cans, both outside the fenced areas, and waste cleanup is inconsistent. Bring your own bags (though sometimes donated bags are available). The park is surrounded by brush and fields, with possible poison ivy/oak. Mosquitoes can be an issue, but I haven't had any flea or tick problems here. The county mows every couple of weeks, which helps, though the parking lot and walkways are often overgrown. Most of the dogs are medium to large breeds in the big dog section, but a handful of small dogs do come regularly. Overall, the dogs are friendly and the owners are great--I've only come across one or two dogs that weren't a good fit, which is typical for any dog park. Locals visit year-round, even in the snow, and there's usually at least one or two people here no matter the time of day. There is also an old, unused agility ramp in the large dog area. The park is open year-round with no posted hours. I'm rating this dog park three stars. While I enjoy bringing my dog here and I'm grateful it exists (especially since there aren't many dog parks on Long Island), it needs better maintenance and more accessible trash cans. In my opinion, the small dog area is oversized for the number of small dogs that use it, and overall the park doesn't measure up to four- or five-star dog parks I've visited elsewhere. That said, it's still worth a visit--the space is large, the community of dogs and owners is wonderful, and it's the best option nearby. read more

Love this place! Dogs are friendly, the people are very nice. Field is huge and all fenced in.

Never had a problem with another dogs behavior towards my dog. A lot of poop, owners don't clean up after their dogs. Some will bring their small breeds into the large dog section then get upset when the big dogs play rough. The dogs we've come across are ok. The owners however aren't. Usually the same people, they will eye you like you walked onto their territory as if they own it! When i first visited the park, i Had a lady curse me out because she claimed "ever since" my dog has been there, the park has had problems. Lol! Lady it's our first time here. One of the larger dog parks on Long Island (2.5+ acres). Things it has going for it: - Plenty of parking - Plenty of seating for owners - Safe area/park - Has both a large & small dog runs - Plenty of room for dogs to really run Things it has against it: - No shade - No water of any kind - No poop bags provided - Ground cover is just grass/dirt - No bathrooms for humans I have been to this park only once and I have to say this dog park has a lot of potential to be one of the better dog parks on Long Island. Needs some canopies, there is not one tree in either run. Needs water lines brought in. Robinson Duck Farm Dog Park - Looking at big dog entrance from back corner of run - Dog Parks Near Me - Brookhaven, New York

I took my 6 month old toy poodle WHO IS FULLY UP TO DATE WITH VACCINES here for the first time last week, she has been having diarrhea ever since, including vomiting which started yesterday. This morning I woke up to her throwing up blood and passing blood through her stool. She is now at the Animal Hospital diagnosed with Parvo and Giardia and needs to be hospitalized due to her severe conditions. I also brought my 3 year old golden retriever WHO IS ALSO UP TO DATE ON ALL HER VACCINES here on the same day and she has also been having EXTREMELY loose stool as well and was also diagnosed with Giardia and being tested for Parvo immediately. I absolutely would NOT recommend this place to anyone with dogs and will never be going back there. If you're a regular or a new visitor you should not be taking your dogs here if they are under the weather and should be picking up your dog's stool and disposing it properly unlike from I saw that day. AND if your dog/puppy is not UP TO DATE on their vaccinations or have any sort of contagious illness, DO NOT bring your dog where other dogs go. It is very inconsiderate and clearly life threatening for other dogs. A one hour trip to the dog park cost me $4K and heartache. Unbelievable. read more

My dog loves this park! If it is your first time there, you should bring doggie bags, water, and a water bowl. If you want to bring your own chair you can. They have chairs there. When you enter the gate, keep your dog on the leash because the dogs will gather around your dog. You then can let your dog go to run and have fun with the other dogs. It is a very large area for the dogs to run. They have two sections....the left side for the smaller dogs and the right side is for the larger dogs. My dog loves to run so once he gets into the park he has all the dogs running. It is so nice how all the dogs get along. We have been there a couple of times and never had a problem. Great place to bring your dog to run and play! Clean and people/dogs are social, friendly and well-behaved. A lot of regulars so there's a good community feeling. Good idea to bring water, doggy bags and treats for your dog. The ground is a good mix of sand, dirt and grass. There is one area for larger dogs and one for smaller dogs. read more

Running water and some shade would be nice, but what would really make it worth while is if some of the locals kept and eye on their pets and acted responsibly. Quite a few of the local trash frequent the place with their pets and completely ruins what could be a good time for all. The Town of Brookhaven has a great Dog Park in the town of Middle Island -- you'll need to go to Brookhaven Town hall at Independence Hill to purchase an electronic key card for access, but what a difference from the Robinson Dog Park on Montauk Hwy. -- the local trash in that area won't spend the $ for the electronic key card fee. read more

We brought our corgi pup here and from the moment we saw another corgi we loved the place. Owners were mostly attentive to their dogs and all very friendly. There were bags for poop pickup and a pile of tennis balls. People brought and shared big jugs of water and there was a plastic patio set to sit. The park is separated into big and little (under 25lbs) sections. We were there for 2 hours and had a blast. read more

My dog loves it here! Not the nicest one around, but super roomy for him to run around. However I was recently there and my dog was trying to play with another dog and this lady tried hitting my dog with a stick. I really would have loved to taken the stick from her and hit her with it. Clearly if you don't want your dog to play DO NOT bring them. Overall besides crazy people it isn't bad. read more

Large public dog park that opened in 2009 in Brookhaven hamlet. Separate areas for large and small dogs. No water, so make sure to bring your own. Gets very crowded on weekends. As a friend calls it, weekends and holidays are "amateur hour" at the dog park. Occasionally dogs get into scraps. Most folks and their dogs are pretty cool. Remember people this is a DOG park, NOT a playground. It's meant for four-leggers not rugrats. read more

Was very upset when I went there today. A more aggressive dog, although a puppy, was in the small dog area bullying the other dogs. So much so to the point where the other dog at the time had to roll over onto its back until its owner picked him up. The owner of the more aggressive dog was no where to be found. Finally while the owners of the dog being picked on gave up and we're trying to pick their dog up to leave, the aggressive a owners came over. If you know your dog is not well behaved and may be a threat to other dogs, leave the park! Or go in to the big dog area. I have a dog that has been attacked by another dog before so seeing this really struck a nerve. Not the dogs fault, irresponsible owners. I didn't even end up going in the gates. read more

Visited on the tail end (nailed it) of a very hot day and the pooch loved the human company even more than the canine counterparts (nothing new for him). The pups tend to stay towards the entrance and gather near the gate to greet newbies (no surprises on either front), so you don't to take much advantage of the grassy area towards the back unless you make an effort to do so. The space borders a wildlife area that's clearly marked, and there's some sparse vegetation within the dog zone for the compulsory urine sprinkling. As tends to happen, folks leave old but useful water bowls and chairs, so bring some refreshments for the group accordingly. On our visit, most visitors seemed to be regulars and we were in the minority as first-timers, which isn't a bad thing since everyone was friendly (aside from the one derelict dog, and its owner, who was also a bit unsavory - luckily they let themselves out quickly). There doesn't seem to be any government-sanctioned site that's of much use, so I certainly understand the lidog site on the URL portion of the listing. 4 stars for the experience and accessibility. read more

I've started coming to this dark park only a few months ago and I absolutely love it here everyone here is so friendly and welcoming. The space is huge for the dogs, there's a lot of chairs to seat and bowls for dogs to drink from. And a bag of bags to pick up after your dog. Recently, there has been an influx of new dogs -- some young and older. A few of the owners do not pay attention to their animal or just don't care. Bum rushing dogs and mob behavior is not ok. Apparently not everyone knows this. Owners are slow to break up aggressive behavior at this park. read more

Second time going to this park & my pup & I love it. It's super clean & everyone is always so friendly. I love that they separate the park by small dogs & the larger dogs. Lots of space for them to run. You don't need any kind of pass & you don't have to pay to get in. read more

Do not bring your dogs here. Owners do not keep an eye on their dogs, and as another reviewer also noted, I was not even able to walk in before a group of dogs rushed my dog and attacked her. A stranger had to help me break it up! The owner(s) came over minutes later, smoking cigarettes, and threatened me because I touched their dog. But I had to in order to get her dogs off my dog! Apparently if I go back there I will get my as* kicked. I was shaking, and so was my poor dog. I've been to many other dog parks, including some in the city, and have never experienced such behavior, not from a dog, but an owner. Do yourself a favor and take your dog to the beach, or another park, instead. read more
