There are a high number of trailers that have not moved in a long time. There is supposed to be a seven day camping limit before you have to move your unit however this doesn't seem to be the case here at this park. The park trails need maintenance as there are overgrown trees, and laid over trees across paths. Some of the trail access have planks of wood for soft ground that is rotting away. Trails are not marked and website map is difficult to read. Some of the docks on the water are inaccessible from shore. read more

Park is gigantic! This is probably the largest park I've seen on the island. I would bring some trail marker flags if you're planning to explore. You can get lost very very easily. Everything will look the same and there's a lot twists and turns. It has happened to me and I'm pretty well versed in hiking and trails. My swissy loves it here. He's not really a runner, so trails and lots of stuff to sniff and check out are his thing. It's pretty busy in the on season and relatively desolate in the off season, but it's nice either way. If you don't mind bundling up, doing some off season walking and hiking might be for you. It's very beautiful and extremely quiet, almost too quiet. I have always felt safe here. As a lady, it can be off putting to be in a large place alone but I always see rangers here and there even if other people aren't around. Many people bring their dogs to run and hike- most are good but as with any public place there are always some bad eggs. I would deff check this one out if you haven't. I often find that we stop and just watch nature. It's a really great way to get out and do something that feels different each time you go. Thaan THE FORGOTTEN ROAD AT SOUTHAVEN PARK , presented by The Gateways Haunted Playhouse.... This is a drive through experience. You can download the track before you go or they will give you a CD to use. This was pretty cool. I would of like to see a hundred or so more walking zombies through the drive but there were many unique sightings. This was my daughter who's 12 first time at a spooky event and it was perfect fit for her. Scary but not too scary. read more

Visit Date: Unsure The problem with waiting awhile to bang out some reviews is that I don't remember when I visited. I came across this park by passing it while I was fairy dusting and I was scheduled to get a run in Yaphank that morning. So I pulled into the park to run and ended up on the trail. The trail was super huge, I actually got lost a little but it was so pretty as well, it kind of made me feel like I was in the hunger games arena but it was also nice. The playgrounds looked a little decrepit so if I bought my son here I'm not sure how much he would like it. Still a nice big park I might be back here one day to run the trail again or hike the trail. read more

*The three stars and this review IS FOR THE CAMPING FACILITIES ONLY, not the park itself, which is separate and beautiful. To start off, the staff is helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Zero complaints about them whatsoever -- however -- the campsite itself is just sort of, "meh." There is really nothing going on here. There are some trails (unmarked), but just flat and boring. There is a river, which is beautiful, but only 3 very small access points along the trail within the 1/2 mile we hiked. Could have been more ahead, who knows, but we decided to turn back. I would suggest booking a site as far away from the entrance side as possible. We stayed on a line that was just a couple hundred feet from a road and you can see the houses. You can also hear all the traffic. Wasn't very "camping" like. There also didn't seem to be much security upon entry. There is a stop sign and a little house... but my guest drove right in, we had a BBQ, we all drove to the neighboring park, came back, and not once were we/they asked for ID. It feels like anyone can drive in at anytime. Bottom line: There are many more beautiful parks in Suffolk County to camp in, however, this is a great place to set up a home base and explore surrounding activities. There is a lot to do around there like Wertheim Nature Preserve, Southaven Park, Smiths Point Beach, William Floyd Estate, etc. All within a short drive. However, if you want a "set it and forget it" camping experience and not worry about driving to other fun places, I would choose another campsite. read more

Fishing, row boats, trails, skeet shooting, camp grounds, ball fields... It's got it all. The constant gun shots are a bit contradicting of a nice relaxing hike. There seem to be a bunch of flying bugs and a poorer quality of park in general when compared to others... Then again wertheim down the road was awful with that the last time I went. Great for a fall foliage walk. Get a little exercise. They've seemed to have cleaned the water up a bit which is good to see, still not like when I was a kid, but getting back to a better, healthier, cleaner place. Wish I could love it, just don't. Not as beautiful as it could be. But there a couple little spots I do quite enjoy. read more

This Park is creepy. Beyond the Ticks waiting to give you Lyme disease and the UFO crash landings. The whole park has a Tales from the dark side vibe. No sounds of birds, no deer running around and the rounds blasting from the shotguns. It's just a formula to play a toll on all things horror movie deep in your psyche. I do remember fishing; Fly Fishing deeper in the park as a kid. Honestly, it's a nice park that just happens to be creepy. Not exactly a destination but worth walking around and taking in the great outdoors if you're in the area. Quite a beautiful and well maintained parked despite being much larger than I originally expected. They're large enough to have local campsites that you normally find in a State level park size. Plenty of walking and biking trails and quite a large area for picnic and bbqing. Especially toward the inner park where they have pavilion areas that have seating up to hundreds. I spent about a few hours just walking inside and exploring what they have to offer here. Quite a number of baseball fields and plus the river is quite calm and they have piers for you to launch kayaks and canoes. Overall pretty impressed with the layout and size of the establishment. I can see why they would have to charge admission fee during the summer (Memorial - Labor Day)since you really do get to use quite a bit of facilities. but outside of the peak summer season its quite nice to enjoy all these for free. Like others have mentioned its quite unfortunate that there is a skeet shooting range next to it so it makes the noise level bit higher than what we would like. But I think for active sports its not much of a distraction. Overall very happy with the visit here and hope to come back again soon to fully appreciate all they have to offer here. read more

I thought this would be a cute thing to try out, given the circumstances of the world today- it is if you're willing to throw money out the window. If you're planning on going through The Forgotten Road I'd arrive 30 minutes prior given there time wait. If you're looking to be the slightest bit shaken, I will tell you now - that's definitely not going to happen. The 'actors,' just stood there and made growling noises. Some just wearing sweatshirts & tried little to no effort in there appearance or role they were given. I would love to love this enormous park in mid Suffolk. It's got many miles of hiking trails, a fantastic campground, a beautiful river with swans and cormorants and some kooky history of a UFO crash-coverup in 1992. What I hate about this park: the shooting range on the western park border-- the constant gun reports make the park an uneasy if not scary place to be instead of an idyllic escape from the suburban sprawl and snarl. The entrance fee of $13 for non- residents is ridiculously high for a place with picnic tables and little other facilities. Unlikely for these things to improve, South Haven will continue to be my "backup" nature preserve. read more

Great place to spend a Saturday afternoon.. Minus all of the gunshots that are constantly going off from the gun range. It's really sad because you really never get a chance to truly take in the beautiful scenery that this place has to offer. read more

Took our Kayaks to the kayak launch. Great idea but not maintained. You pay to use it and it's loaded with swan and goose poop. The boat docks are the same. I don't understand why they don't just hose it down. There were 4 employees in the house collecting money doing nothing. When we walked up to the pay window the person was sleeping with her head down. I had to say "hello" We managed to get in out kayaks and it was a nice trip. But then we had to come back. Yuck! I hope the state gets there act together for next summer. read more

Rented a rowboat here. The scenery is just beautiful, more swans then I've seen in my entire life, so peaceful and lovely. We brought some oatmeal to feed the geese and ducks that came near the boat. Very fun and relaxing. It isn't expensive to rent the boats hourly but if you have a green key you get a discounted rate. read more

This was the park my Dad used to take me too as a youngin in the 80's and early 90's. We would feed the ducks leftover bread from dinner from the night before. It was sweet and i know you're all currently saying to yourself "awwwwww". Later in life I come to find out that the park is even cooler than I had ever known! An alien space ship was shot down here and covered up by local authorities and is probably stored at brookhaven lab with all the rest of the crazy shit that happens out there in the boonies. Its true....google that shit! Aside from its alienistic (that'a word?) past the park has grounds for picnic/bbq's and baseball fields. Theres a bunch of trails as well. Be careful though. Theres weird people that live in these woods. They dont wear shoes either...i dont trust anything that walks outdoors without shoes on. I like this park. They keep it clean and the guys at the windows are nice too. I just wish the boats ran a little longer in the day. I went on the train ride with my niece and it was really great for the kids. They do a really good job on that. All it takes is a donation to get a ticket for the train. camping here is pretty good, it has water BUT THE WATER SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS SO BRING BOTTLED WATER! HAVING GREAT SMELLING SOAP SHOULD HELP AS WELL! they also have electric hook ups. picnic tables at all sites. if you have a small camper its great but if you have a large motor home like I do ...40 feet.....it is a tight sqweeze to get In. to many trees are in the way, the town needs to take some trees down as they are rotting and well in the way when you try to park. other wise it is clean and well maintained. read more
