Avril 50 was a regular stop in my patrol days and I loved walking into the shop. Always the wonderful aroma of brewing coffees and chocolate dancing with other exotic smells and the smells of fine papers and magazines. It always felt to me like stepping from West Philadelphia into a magical pocket of Europe. As it looked exactly the same, I wondered if anything had changed in the past 22 years and as soon as I crossed the threshold, I found that it was the same - like stepping back 22 years, yet somehow I was that much older. The proprietor was still there, still the same and looking no different - something that confirmed my belief that this was a magical and wonderful pocket paradise tucked away on a small West Philadelphia street. A brief catch-up chat, a shopping bag of fine teas and a perfectly brewed double-espresso to takeaway later; I stepped back into the bright Fall sun of West Philadelphia. I found myself smiling as I sipped the espresso, happy that one of the best things for me in that neighborhood has remained unchanged for others to enjoy and to continue to discover. It will not be another 22 years before I make my way back - that is for certain.

I'm still not entirely sure what the shop is supposed to be but it was an experience going there for sure. The coffee is self serve and there are several different selections, each with a short description up on the wall. My boyfriend and I each got a medium (I believe it was $2.25 per) and loved our coffee. Both were tasty and exceptionally strong. I'm not sure if they do anything fancier (lattés, etc) but I doubt it. Nonetheless, if I were a student at penn and needed a coffee this is where I would go.

If you keep up to date on your weekly papers, Or your Philly centered websites, Than you usually find yourself already knowing a good deal about what Philadelphia Magazine is covering in their pages to the point that it's old news. Grant it they usually provide more details, but a lot of times it just isn't enough. Need to give it up for their best of issue though. because it does give a good spotlight on restaurants and stores that you need to be checking out, among other things.

The new look is brightly lit and the magazines and videos have been replaced by racks of toys and playtime clothing. The toy selection has undergone a SERIOUS update. Gone are the cheap items made with dodgy materials from no name manufacturers. They've been replaced with mid and high tier selections for every experience level. The live girl shows are still here. There is a theater upstairs where the video booths used to be. Entry costs money unless you come as a couple. And to help accommodate more weekend fun, the store and theater are now open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday.

The jeans did not fit so I returned immediately the same day. FP confirmed they received and was processing a full refund. However I received a "credit" to spend my $128 plus tax, etc. on a FP Credit. This is NOT what I was entitled to since my return was within the return policy. I have contacted FP and PayPal asking for refund on the account I paid with NOT a company credit. I've called 800-309-1500 sent text mgs.., called and have proof of the time I've wasted trying to get through! Also tried calling their headquarters (212) 454-5500 and a recording says the number is "not a working number". SUCH BS.

But despite this it's hard to get a feel of who's who when it comes to our local writers. That's why it's great that a free magazine like Philadelphia Stories exists and is widely available throughout many coffee shops, etc. Philadelphia Stories is a quarterly magazine that showcases the fiction and poetry of many writers from our area. Each issue has at least 9 good reads to go through, a local author profile, and some reading suggestions. It also gives writers and artists the chance to readily submit their work. So you might be able to dust off that great American novel idea and send out a chapter. Going to their website also clues you in on some fun literary events that are going on throughout the city. And you can get some insight on some of the books that they put out too. Start reading!
