A 40 acre wetland in Edwardsville, IL, the Watershed Nature Center was transformed from a city…read morelagoon to a city park in 1995. Our friends from Edwardsville took me and my wife there on a hot Monday afternoon. It was great to see collaboration between residents and city government to transform and maintain land used by both wildlife and people. This land was a sewage lagoon until 1984, when it was filled and stopped being used. In 1990, a proposal was made to transform it into a nature preserve, and a non-profit was formed to coordinate. Over the next five years, both public and private money was used to slowly terraform, until the center was officially opened to the public in 1995. The center features paved hiking trails, a raised marsh walk, and an air conditioned welcome center with educational classrooms. The Nature Preserve Foundation maintains the trails and native habitats. We saw quite a few animals during our stroll, with various birds (our friends are birders) and even a large snapping turtle close to the concrete marsh walk. We realized later that there was a female turtle underneath. There was also an area where bamboo was growing, with it being pretty clear how fast it can spread and grow if not intentionally controlled.

From the Park & Rec Dept website: More than just "room to roam"…read more To use the 2.5 acre dog park: Owners must register their dogs and provide proof of their dog's immunization records to the Parks & Recreation office. Owners then receive a swipe card for access to the park. I take "Angus": our Australian Shepherd (a 21/2 year old rescue) here on a daily basis. He's a little hyper and still adjusting, so I use the park so he can get up in the morning and run himself silly chasing the pedestrian and bike traffic that runs parallel to the Dog Park. My wife usually takes him in the near dusk time to allow him to unwind for the evening and he's been socializing with the other dogs. While many owners let the dogs run "free" not everyone should; unless they know their dog's temperament around other animals and people. While this is a good learning experience for him; my wife and I sometimes have to corral him in the smaller dog area when he's wanting to herd other dogs and not be social. It's a great park and while they've an agility course in the large dog side of the park, it's missing a jump bar that was damaged sometime after the opening. The smaller dog area has a few agility items and we usually take Angus there to practice the smaller obsticle course.

Awesome dog park right on Scott AFB. There are two fenced in areas for dogs to run and socialize…read more One area is for larger dogs and the other for smaller. Each fenced in area has park benches and covered picnic tables to relax and watch your dogs play as well as water fountains that have a small bowl on the bottom to run water in for your dog. There's also agility training equipment in each area as well as trash receptacles that have plastic bag dispensers to clean up after your pup. This dog park is very clean, never crowded and the best part is it's FREE!!
