The Wallingford location is old and run down. When you walk into the building you are met by an intense and pungent smell of mold, so anyone with allergies to mold should stay away. Next, the place looks like it has not been cleaned the past ten years. It is outright disgusting. Floors are covered in a thick layer of dirt and dust. Disgusting when the kids were encouraged to have bare feet. There is a play area with toys with an old shag rug and toys covered in dirt, dust and old hair. These include even toys for infants who mouth everything. So in a place like this with several events every day and a ton of kids touching and mouthing the toys, they should really be washed every day. Not every year! To the owners: Seriously - clean this place up so it can be fit for kids! And get rid of the mold, so you won't end up with a visiting allergy kid having a severe asthma attack!

My child was bit a total of five times in one week (4 times in one day with a deep bite breaking skin and required 3+ weeks to heal and another bite 2 days later). The meeting with the owner included victim blaming and he was accusatory, and condescending. He recommended that OUR child move down a class with a smaller ratio since she hasn't met walking milestones even though cognitively she belonged in that class. He then said that "maybe she isn't ready for a group daycare setting" when she was the one that was bitten (see another Yelp reviewer who experienced the same). And finally, he said that maybe we should look at a nanny service since we were "looking to control the situation". We placed our daughter in this daycare to obtain social skills and be with peers. We care about our child's safety and advocated that something be done. Their response was that they meet state mandated ratios and that no further actions will be done. He then has the audacity to ask if we have degrees in child behavior or development and that this is normal child behavior. This is absolutely condescending to any parent's legitimate, justified feelings and concern for their child's wellbeing. We are empathetic to children learning and growing and that these things do happen, but it was the severity and frequency of these biting occurrences that worried us. He continued to gaslight us that we were overreacting and that this is normal child behavior. They were "implementing a behavior plan" but could not provide us any substantial, tangible plan that our daughter would not come back with another bite. In fact, he said it's bound to happen again. Very reassuring. If you value your child's safety and want a daycare that takes accountability, responsibility, and makes you feel welcome, you will not find it here.

I don't think I ever imagined that any school experience could be described as magical, but that's the word that kept popping into my head everyday at drop off and pick up. A week in the woods was a perfect change of pace for my little city kid. He swam in the campus pools each day, played games like tag and basketball, built with legos, dew pictures, built toy boats to use in the pool, and ate snacks provide by the school as well as the lunch we packed. He also had the chance to feed the school's sheep and chickens. By the end of the week, he was begging to return again in the future, so we'll definitely be looking into attending a camp again in the future.

They have a walking path through the woods with a natural playground and sandbox, a bird house building to watch and interactive displays, a mini zoo inside a house with small animals and activities including a treehouse. (Admission otherwise is only $3 for adults and $2 for kids 2-17). There's animals/insects inside such as owls, huge cockroaches, giant turtle, snakes. And a cute reading corner full of nature books. There's also a discovery den AKA play area indoors for $1. There's animals/insects outdoors such as turkey vultures, turtles, a butterfly house and a bird observatory (cute on the inside with toys for the kiddos - be sure to read the story about the couple who opened the center). And a natural playscape outdoors. There's also a bunch of fairy houses throughout the property that girl scouts donated. And lots of trails through the forest. They also have Magic Mornings for ages 2-4 Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays - but register ahead as they only have a certain amount of spots each day (it's seasonal - they have in fall and spring but not summer - see website). It's an hour class for $10 and includes a snack, craft, nature walk etc. They usually pull out an animal each class. It's great to get some time in nature with other kids. In summer, they have a full week of Magic Mornings in their Itty Bitty Briar Camp. Ms. Heidi teaches it and she is just great. They have a different theme every day such as sun, water, clouds etc and there's an activity each day (visit pond and catch tadpoles, water play, craft pertaining to theme). They have preschool pioneers for ages 4-5 and summer camp for older kids for a week in late June. *Just beware in June that parking is limited due to school field trips and you may not fit in either of the lots; you may have to park out front of the house to the left (which is fine - she just doesn't want buses idling there) They also have field trips to gardens and to the shore, classes for seniors, family nature nights, hot smores nights... Only negative (besides parking, which they can't really control), is the "snacks" for kids at Magic Mornings aren't the healthiest. One was cinnamon sugar graham crackers with whipped cream- regular would have been fine. 2 days were cheddar gold fish. Another day was blue jello with whipped cream. And some red licorice - the kind that whips. Fruit Loops were used for colors. So, if you don't like your child eating sugar, let them know you have a dietary restriction or bring your own snack (snack time is ~10 min and probably not needed but the kids always love snack time!). Some options that would be healthier and just as easy would be pretzel sticks, fruit, crackers, popcorn, veggies, string cheese...but I guess those all cost more besides pretzels/crackers/popcorn.
