Amazing, dedicated teachers and a solid program that gives students the building blocks to become excellent dancers. We look forward to participating in Nutcracker every year, the kids have a blast and the show is always beautiful. A dance studio that truly cares about the kids and the community. read more

Purchased tickets to The Nutcracker for my daughters and myself because I remember how wonderful the Nutcracker was live. The Coronado Theater is beautiful and my daughters loved looking at all of the old pieces on display. Our seats were great with a perfect view of the stage. The Rockford Symphony Orchestra played beautifully! They were the highlight of our night! I was very disappointed in the production. The adult dancers in the first act were not very good. I don't expect the children to be perfect and they were actually very delightful to watch. There were obvious staging problems and it felt like so much was missing from The Nutcracker that I remember. The man playing Drosselmier just seemed to run and twirl his cape through the entire show which made no sense to me. The young women from the dance company danced beautifully as did the woman playing Clara, however the Cavelier was very poorly cast. He did not have the level of dance expertise as his partner and it felt awkward. In looking through the program I wonder if perhaps the Artistic Director should not be allowed to cast himself! I feel that the $46 I paid for each ticket was worth the beauty of the theater and also hearing the Rockford Symphony perform. I won't attend another Rockford Dance Company Production thought!!! read more

The Rockford Dance Company (RDC) is committed to excellence in their mission to promote the art of dance through quality performance, education, and outreach programming. RDC's focus is ballet with a well defined curriculum for all age levels and expertise. Over 45 classes are offered in a variety of dance genres including ballet, tap, jazz, modern, partnering, pointe and variations (solo work), and adult wellness classes. The company performs in four productions per season, two of which occur at the Coronado theater in downtown Rockford. The annual production of the "Nutcracker" is in collaboration with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra. RDC's outreach has grown to include programs such as Terrific Tuesdays, Fantastic Fridays, Camp Collage, Girl Scouts on the Move, Ballet Birthday Parties, work with the homeless, and dance classes for children with special needs. Additionally, the company members, visit schools, retirement homes and festivals to introduce the art of dance to others

History

Established in 1973.

Jayne Poor and Chuck Hoenes were the original directors of the company in 1973 when they gathered citywide dancers into a company to explore a concentration on dance. Rockford was in the midst of its own cultural synergy with organizations such as Charlotte's Web and New American Theater making it easy to imagine a citywide company of dancers. The first audition resulted in 86 dancers becoming charter members of the company. Regular weekly company classes started in 1976. In 1982, board members traveled to New York to learn how a school of dance is established and run properly. The school was established with quality standards, and in 1991 a capital campaign allowed us to move into our new facilities at the Riverfront Museum Park with five state-of the art dance studios. RDC's established quality has attracted a student base of over 250 students.

It was only $15 to park in the garage and there were staff in the street directing traffic into the parking garage and helping people cross the street from the parking garage to the theater. The theater itself is very decorative and kept clean. All the staff were very friendly. The bathrooms are on the lower level. We sat in the lower balcony and it had a very good view of the stage. They don't allow outside food, and there is a quick security check prior to coming in. My husband and I purchased the fiesta dip, cheese curds, apple cider donuts and the cheese and caramel popcorn. Next our group went apple picking. Prices are pretty standard compared to other spots, they do have a $5 deposit if you are borrowing a basket. If you are able to bring a basket of your own, I highly recommend that. To get to the apple orchard you take a short 'hay ride' which I really enjoyed. It was nice to see different areas of the farm. Staff here is extremely friendly and helpful. I'm officially a fan girl of Edwards and am looking forward to many more apple picking adventures here in the future!

The owners Bob and Vicki Donley were super nice about it and took the time to show us around. We spent time in the back learning about the mill and yarn making process. Outside we checked out the alpacas. Interesting animals. Back in the store we browsed their finished alpaca products and we left with a couple things. This is definitely a five star destination.

This past week I went to Rockford Dance Company to enroll my daughter in Fall sessions. The staff was very unprofessional. While I waited to speak to someone regarding the different classes options, prices, & etc. two staff members discussed an Emily's personal life. The discussion was very "mean girl", stating Emily has been divorced twice before turning 40, fakes being once in a abusive relationship- "why did she desperately try to get this ex back if he was abusive", & is currently in a relationship with a guy who cheats on her, but she puts up with it because this man has money. This was all said in-front of me & children. Clearly, I left & did not enroll my daughter. Very disappointing. read more

5 stars for the past 3 years. 4th year into the school, with a new artistic director, 1 star. The new school no longer cares what the parents think, they just want the parents money. The atmosphere is negative because the new artistic director is condescending to the very young students and to the parents who pay his salary. He will not hesitate to insult a 9 year old in the classroom and talk down to parents with concerns. The former artistic director was the complete opposite and is truly missed by many students and parents. If the negativity continues the media will get involved. read more
