Starlight is a beautiful outdoor theatre featuring local talent going shows like West Side Story, the Addams Family, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Madagascar which were just some of the selections this summer. My husband and I just got home from seeing Disaster at Starlight Theatre. What a fun night! It is a spoof on all the 1970's disaster movies with 1970's music! We've never been disappointed in anything Starlight theatre puts on. Tonight was no different! The music was fabulous! The actors and actresses were so good! Funny lines delivered superbly! $25.00 a ticket! How can you go wrong? The orchestra (down in the pit) was outstanding! We seriously roared laughing. Sat next to a couple we've never met before. They immediately start chatting with us like we've been friends for years. That's the kind of place Starlight Theatre is! If you've never been, try it! You'll love it! read more

Located on the campus of Rock Valley College, the Starlight Theatre hosts professionally-funded community theater and other events. Originally completely open to the elements, the theater was renovated over three phases between 2001-2003, with the renovation designed by Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architects. Before performances, the roof's six 15-ton panels open in succession, like the petals of a flower, creating an opening to the night sky in the shape of a six-pointed star. read more

One of my favorite places to go in Rockford on a summer night! My family has been a season ticket holder for many years at Starlight and we look forward to seeing the shows each year. They always do 4 per season and there is always a good mixture of family-friendly and adult-friendly musicals that appeal to everyone. For a volunteer-based theater, the voices, acting, sound, and production are wonderful. The renovation of the building was spectacular - the ceiling opens up to the stairs or closes off to keep away the rain. Rain or shine, the show goes on! Grab a popcorn at intermission - it's only $1! Grab a soda or water - they are also only $1! Another reason we love Starlight is the reasonable pricing of all concessions offered onsite. They could charge more, but have consistently kept prices reasonable for theater patrons. Pro tip: Bring a jacket or a small blanket -- it always cools down more than you think it will! I always end up snagging part of my mom's blanket once the sun goes down and the temperature with it. Starlight is a treasure in the Rockford community thanks to all of the volunteers who put on the show, the commitment of the director who has been there for 30+ years, and the community support it receives. Starlight is one of Rockford's best kept secrets! It is an awesome experience and I make sure I go see at least a handful of shows each year. I even take my kiddos! A starlight experience on a summer weekend is a highlight. Even my daughters will make requests to go as we drive by the campus and see the banners for planned shows! read more
