They were housed in nearby Camp Shanks, and on the day they left America to join the war, 40,000 men a month walked down the pier, and boarded either a ship to France or a ferry to New York on their way to England. For many, the walk down the Piermont pier was their final walk on American soil. This striking monument features a statue of a helmeted GI in full uniform. He has a hand grenade and a shovel on his belt, and a sash with many pockets for equipment storage. His right hand is raised in a sign of farewell. His left hand is resting on a stone whose plaque bears the following inscription: Last Stop U.S.A. During World War Two, 40,000 U.S. troops per month, including many Piermont residents, passed this spot enroute to the end of Piermont Pier, the largest port of embarkation on the East Coast, where ships were waiting to transport them to military duty in war-torn Europe. Many of these troops landed on the shores of France where the invasion began on June 6, 1944. Thus this area came to be known as "Last Stop U.S.A." After the war came to a victorious conclusion, some 533,869 men returned home to the U.S.A. first setting foot on their homeland at the end of that same Piermont Pier. "Lest We Forget," many of the men who embarked from Piermont never returned. This plaque is dedicated to the honor of those who served and the sacred memory of those who never returned. Minutes of the East New Jersey Board of Proprietors and existing public records lead to the belief [that the] house was built by a Westervelt, early owners of the land (a part of the much disputed Ramapough tract). According to recently discovered records, the house served as a tavern during the 18th century. Thus came the persistent legend that Aaron Burr stopped here for liquid refreshment en route to the Hermirage. This house is on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places." It's got this really spooky, abandoned vibe. If someone were filming a post apocalyptic farm scene, or a creepy spooky movie, this would be a good place to do it. We didn't see anyone else while we were there. The mansion looked slightly decrepit, and everything had a shabby, timeworn look. There's a really decent set of trails that wind throughout the property, but they're not blazed very well, or at all really. It's mostly a matter of keeping to the map and wandering around the wide trails. My biggest complaint is the mixed messages on the allowance of dogs. The webpage says that dogs are welcomed, on leash. Once you get there, there are signs that say dogs aren't allowed. It would be nice if the parks department could get their messaging straight on that.

The Women's Federation Monument is located inside the Palisades Interstate Park, accessible from…read morethe Long Path and the Forest View Trail. It's really quite cool. It was built in 1929 to honor the women who helped turn the Palisades into a park. There's also a small bit of landscaping in the area, with some flower gardens and plaques. You can climb up to the top of the monument and get a good view, or you can explore the structure in general. Sadly, there's a bit of graffiti spoiling it as of our visit, hopefully that will get cleaned up.

Growing up in Garfield, I never even knew that we had waterfalls b/c river road wasn't the nicest…read moreroad to drive down. Now, they really changed it. They paved the entire street, added a sidewalk, a playground, and a ramp down to the waterfall. It definitely adds beauty to our town. I now run down there and enjoy the sites. Now this isn't the Niagara Falls by any measure, but its a simple citys gem.. I think its great and i'll be running around here a lot more often... not to mention- they will be opening up a new wawa right around here very shortly!!

If you are in the neighborhood you can read it and scan the QR code for more information. "Central Park's original entrances were named in the nineteenth century in honor of professions and populations that had played a prominent role in New York City's history. The naming of the Gate of the Exonerated in 2022 pays homage to all those who have been wrongfully convicted of crimes and was directly inspired by "The Exonerated Five." In 1989. five Black and Latino boys from Harlem -Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise were wrongfully arrested, convicted, and incarcerated for the beating and rape of a White female jogger in this area of Central Park. Before charging the boys, the NYPD extensively interrogated them for several days, often excluding their parents and never with legal representation present. Written and video statements made by four of them under these conditions were subsequently retracted as coerced. They and their families sustained racially-charged media attacks, harassment, and calls for the death penalty. They pleaded not guilty and insisted on their innocence at trial. Despite inaccurate testimony, no forensic evidence, and no eyewitness accounts, the five were found guilty at trial, sentenced to between five and fifteen years in prison, and became registered sex offenders until they were exonerated - four, after having served their full sentences. With widespread pressure to hold someone accountable. the police and prosecutors failed to pursue leads that would have pointed to the real attacker. The actual assailant confessed to the crime, and DNA testing corroborated his confession. On December 19, 2002, the Supreme Court of the State of New York vacated the now-adult mens convictions. The experience of The Exonerated Five and their families illustrates the historic pattern of unjust arrests and wrongful convictions of Black and Latino young people in America. It stands as a grievous example of systemic racism and a miscarriage of justice that forever altered the lives of five young boys and their families for whom the north end of Central Park had been their playground. The handling of the case and media coverage at the time stigmatized Harlem youth and, for many in the community, impaired their relationship to the park. The Gate of the Exonerated was conceived as a threshold toward healing the wounds of this painful history, and it recognizes the ongoing struggle and fight to ensure justice for all."
