We went to the Mother's Day brunch this past May and it was one of the best we've been to in many years.

I had not been in quite a while. What a difference…read more New golf course superintendent and the level of agronomy has risen. Greens were a tad slow but understandable with the work they are trying to do. Tee boxes still need some work but players could help out by using the divot sand on the tee. And hey fix a ball mark or two even if you don't hit the green and make one. Golf course karma is a thing I swear. The unmown areas were a bit irritating but if I hit it straight it would not have mattered. Played as lateral hazards and ate a few golf balls. Appreciate the course hosting a Veterans Golf Association tournament. Course held up well but the pin locations were a bit brutal so be warned if you play, there is slope and places for sucker pins.

Unfortunately, after playing the Lakes and River courses today, I was deeply disappointed by the new extensive "No- Mow" areas. These are not simply areas well away from normal play. On many holes, thick unmowed grass begins immediately at the edge of the fairway, often with little or no intermediate cut. A ball that takes a small bounce or rolls through the fairway can disappear. We were told before the round that there is no-penalty relief if you find your ball, but if you don't find it, you've lost a ball. That can be a very harsh result for a relatively minor miss. The bigger issue for me was what it did to the enjoyment and pace of the round. We were three approximately 18-handicap golfers with nobody in front of us. We normally finish in 3:45-4:00. Today took about 4:20, our group lost approximately six balls, and we spent far more time searching than we wanted to. Having one or two players repeatedly searching in thick grass interrupted the continuity of the round and became frustrating. I understand there may be environmental and maintenance reasons for creating no-mow areas, and I'm not suggesting they all be eliminated. I do hope management will reconsider some of their placement. Adding intermediate cuts along fairways, thinning particularly dense areas, and providing reasonable bailout areas around some hazards could make a significant difference while still accomplishing the course's objectives. These courses have been played and enjoyed for many years with much of this property maintained differently. With seasonal golfers returning soon, I think many are going to be surprised by how significantly the new configuration changes the experience. Cocoa Beach has always been high on our list because of its location, familiarity and welcoming atmosphere. That's what makes this particularly disappointing. For now, it has unfortunately dropped considerably on our list of courses to play. I hope management views golfer feedback as an opportunity to fine-tune the new approach rather than an objection to change. There is still a very good golf facility here, and I hope they find a better balance between their goals for the property and an enjoyable round of golf for the everyday player.

The clay tennis courts and pickle ball courts are very nice as well. The sunset grill and main dining room offer a variety of food choices. All of this and the beautiful New Smyrna Beach are a true gem. If you are considering relocating to Florida you must give Sugar Mill Country Club and its surrounding neighborhood a look!

We raised a glass to cheers my dear friend and a big thank you for the invite and I may have planted a kiss on her cheek. The private venue offered some socializing we've been missing with our good friends and of course the incorporation of some social distancing, but still the accommodations offered an intimate setting and the staff completely understands the importance of giving everyone space but still managed to provide exceptional service. I know there's an invite pending for a wonderful dinner in the near future and after touring the restaurant and sports bar it's looking like I'm going to have to drop a few more hints so I can experience it all. This is a beautiful Country Club with lots of amenities with a small membership, there's nothing not to like about this place...
