The creek is viewable from your campsite. Please DO NOT rent a pontoon boat unless you are an extremely competent rower and or have a guide with you. Me and my three buddies rented a four person pontoon boat and nearly drowned as we encountered a "sweeper" (tree that has fallen and is just above the water surface, making going over it in the boat impossible. (Google "drowning in Alaska by sweeper or strainer trees"). Our boat wedged up against the tree and the current was strong and wanted to capsize our boat but did not and ultimately, after what seemed like several frantic minutes where one of us was pinned on our back and having his face smashed by a stout branch, and another was in the water and having his waders fill up with water and having to struggle to stay above the surface of the water by holding onto tree branches with all his might, we were pushed under the tree and branches with some scrapes and broken fly rods. Three of the four of us believed we were going to drown. If you want to fish this creek, just do so from the bank.

The indoor temperature is just cool enough to keep you moving and there is hardly ever anyone on the track. Perfect for snowstormy and rainy days. Ample parking three sides of the building with entrances on both sides if needed for heavier traffic. They had the Sportsman's show set up in what may have been a courted area, but I'm not certain. We also say a turf field where a group of young ladies were practicing softball. It was really great to see such a nice sports complex for the kids and adults to utilize in Wasilla!!!

Every meal was so delicious. The guides are great, know where to go for silvers and were especially patient with me while I learned to fish for salmon. The lodging cabins were clean and the beds were very comfortable. The main cabin felt like home away from home. We were also able to find time, when not fishing, to see the beautiful sites in Alaska recommended by Jim and Maria. They have a wealth of knowledge about Alaska. We brought home plenty of salmon to enjoy throughout the year.

If fishing is your preferred pastime, the campground is adjacent to the famous Little Susitna River. There is even a small boat launch beach area in the rear of the campground. At different times of the year you can fish for all five species of Alaskan salmon (Coho, King, Sockeye, Chum, and Pink) here on the Little Susitna. Ken and Sheila have been managing this campground for many years and have developed a clientele of regular campers. This makes the campground atmosphere a bit friendlier than other campgrounds. It is not uncommon to have an impromptu pot luck with your neighbors. When the fish are running this campground can fill up quickly so calling ahead to make reservation is recommended.

My friend and I tried to play a round last Saturday (7/18), only to have it ruined by very…read moreobnoxious group calling themselves the Alaska Scottish Club who were running a tournament. Settlers was happy to take our $60 each for access to the course, but the tournament hoodlums were clearly the ones in charge. For a group pretending to honor Scotland--the birthplace of golf--these people acted shamefully: lots of loud talking on tee boxes, yelling & whooping on greens, and a general disregard for anyone not wearing a kilt. What made it worse was a "marshal" who made no effort to curb the rude behavior, but rather seemed to be on some kind of scavenger hunt: darting in/ out if fairways while we tried to tee off, and "hovering" around our party throughout the round. After it became clear that course employees were part of the ruckus--both pro shop staff and their non-golfer friends screaming around in their cart--we abandoned our round after the 9th hole. When I emailed the course leadership--Amos, Vicky, and David--Amos responded that they wanted to talk sometime by phone and I haven't heard from them since. This isn't the first time I've experienced an awful round at Settlers. My friends and I have nearly been struck by golf balls a handful of times by out-of-control "golf bros" using carts. Mid- to late season rounds are often foiled by swampy fairways, thanks to people using their own carts who run rampant all over the fairways. But it appears to be course leadership who's most at fault-- they opened the course decades ago without engineering the appropriate drainage and irrigation management, they've been "duct taping" maintenance over the years until recently, and continue to have no control over the behavior of people on the course. Marshals might appear from time to time--usually to repeat the presumptuous lecture about using carts in Alaskan weather, but they are worthless as far as far as maintaining an appropriate pace of play or addressing rowdy behavior. Rather than pay $60 for your round and $24 for a turkey club sandwich(?!?!), I suggest you play anywhere else if you value your time and money like I do.
