I have worked with him in the early 80's both in Vancouver and Los Angeles. I am sorry for Karia and I do not know the story and neither did I ask Lyle. I am not emitting an opinion on what did or did not occur but if I had anybody design a kitchen for my wife and me, I would go to Lyle without reserve. I hope things got resolved eventually and we have to remember that there are always two sides to a story. As a disclaimer I want to say that I am a Designer of high end kitchens in West Hollywood, with projects in Beverly Hills, Bel Air and gated communities around Los Angeles with more than 35 years in the Kitchen industry.

While I was very happy with the design of the kitchen, (considered two stars but no, I'm too upset over the treatment we have received) my husband and I have not been happy with the paint on our expensive wood cabinets and had Nickel's service person over (finally) on June 30 this year. They flat out told me they were not standing up well, took photos, and said we would hear back from him very soon with their plan to fix it. (Cabinets 4 and a half years old, only two people who are very particular and careful which the service person said was obvious, and we are here only six months of the year). I then let Lyle know what they said, and asked him if this problem wouldn't just repeat itself, and his answer was: "no, they have a better paint now and they will take care of you." I first contacted Lyle about the cabinet issues two years ago, with several emails last year, and we finally got the above service call this summer. This summer after the service call, when not hearing from Nickels cabinets for several months despite the assurances I received, I sent several emails to Lyle (which he failed to even have the courtesy to respond to) so I finally asked my designer to assist, and due to her we were told yesterday that Nickels now suddenly can't see a problem with the paint. The classic run-around. This was the complete opposite of what the Nickels service person said when he was here. Now Nickels want Lyle to come here to assess the problem - excuse me, I stayed home a whole day for Nickels own trouble shooter and Lyle has had two years to come here and see what the problem was? No thanks. They have achieved their objective because I would rather pay to have them redone than deal with people like this, however I would like to warn other people not to expect their "dream" kitchen as I did because they will be sadly disappointed and disillusioned. I thought that having a cupboard contractor meant that you wouldn't have to deal with this crap. Apparently not. Will now have the huge hassle of finding someone GOOD and having them redone at our own cost as we refuse to even think about dealing with either of these companies any further. We are so unhappy with these cabinets. If you want cabinets that are all shiny behind every handle and in other places too, and a terrible service response, be sure and contact Westwerk and/or Nickels cabinets.

Received a flyer from this company a couple of weeks ago, stating it was a 'shameless promotion' to…read moreprevious clients, which reminded me I'd been meaning to write this review since Renaissance painted my condo a couple of years ago. What a mistake hiring this company was- I didn't know any painters so I picked them off Yelp based on reviews. I wanted to give two stars because the guys were really nice, however for this kind of business, it is results that matter. So one star it is. Review is not under my real name. When my first contact to them did not receive a response after two weeks, I followed up and did receive a response. A 'professional' decorator (her name was Meme- she was nice, I liked her and even tipped her above her $175 fee, which BTW was higher than quoted by Renaissance who said $125-150) came out to help me with colour choices; my condo has a unique layout and I had some specific ideas in mind but wanted some input. After the consult, I waited a few weeks; finally after several emails from me and much delay on their side we set up a date for month later- which got pushed back a couple of times. I was a little unsure about the colour choices made by the decorator and had questioned her a bit on them; however I decided to trust her as she said it would look great once on the walls. So on the day of painting I left for work and returned that evening as they were just finishing for the day. When I walked in, my jaw literally dropped when I saw my dining room- a horrid dark grey with hints of purple, one green wall across from it, and pale yellow though the rest of the suite. They were only about half-way finished; they had apparently badly underestimated how long things would take (you'd think they'd know). As I looked through the rooms, I started noticing mistakes and sloppy work everywhere, and being very upset, I called the owner, who came by to inspect his employee's work. I pointed out the shoddy work- I was pretty angry and told him I expected better work for the money (almost $2,000 all told for a one bedroom). He promised to put things right. One thing that was incredibly glaring was that on some walls, the paint was not covering the previous colours correctly; I could see the bleed through. They made a comment about those colours being difficult together when trying to cover- however, I PAID their 'professional' consultant, who, along with the painters who approved the proposal, should have known that. The consultant also had it on the proposal to paint over my travertine stone fireplace! So glad I got home before they did so. Next day they came back (well, one of them did- apparently the company had another job booked and couldn't spare any more workers...) and I was hoping for a better result. He did fix up most of the areas, but not all- however I was still completely unsatisfied with the colour choices, the lack of attention to detail in the work, and therefore unfortunately cannot recommend this company- I have attached some photos to show why. You'll see mistakes, sloppy coverage, colours showing through, missed areas, and a broken electrical plug. Thing is, I know how to paint, and I did have colours in mind that were much better than what they chose, I just didn't have the time to do the work at that point. I have since repainted most of the suite myself (still a few areas to get to), and it looks ten times better than the job from Renaissance. (The consultant's colour choices were terrible for what I wanted, pretty much the exact opposite of what I had in mind, and they also did NOT go well against each other- part of me wonders if she is colourblind; for example the colour she chose for my bathroom actually CLASHES with my vanity countertop, which is a pale yellow shade. You'd think she would have noticed). Next time if I don't feel like doing the work again, I'll just go to Benjamin Moore and have them recommend someone. Sorry guys (well, not really- I feel totally ripped off), but representing yourselves as pros and giving this kind of result for the money is just inexcusable. Wish now I hadn't tipped the painters but I'm a nice guy. To you this is just a job to make money- to me, this is my home. ***EDIT- March 08 '18: Received another promotional letter from Renaissance the other day. Then this morning there was an email from them asking if I got their letter; I responded to the email asking to be taken OFF their mailing list and suggested they look at this review. Oh, and they put the wrong name on the letter- it was addressed to someone named "Ruth". I'm not a female. What a clusterfuck of a company.

In 2015 / 2016 Henderson Construction did a full blown renovation on our house; almost on time and…read morealmost on budget (hey - it's a project) During the cold snap in late February 2024 we discovered a previously unknown condensation issue on a portion of the pergola attached to the house. The issue resulted in some ice build up which resulted in water dripping from the ceiling of the pergola. We called Jeff who sent his Construction Manager (Shawn) to do some exploratory work to see if he could determine the root of the problem; in turn Shawn brought in some additional crew to pull apart some of the ceiling sections to find the problem. Nothing came to light as to the cause. Jeff brought back the insulation contractor who checked to ensure that the insulation work was not the cause of the issue (it wasn't). Jeff then brought in a Thermal Engineer to do a complete survey of our house, including thermal imaging to try locate any warm spot(s) that could cause the condensation problem. The Engineer determined that there was a small void attic area that was trapping heat from the house and was not vented correctly so as to prevent the condensation issue. On the recommendation of the Engineer, Jeff brought back the original roofer who installed appropriate venting which should prevent the condensation issue from happening again (will have to wait for the next cold snap to see if it worked). Shawn and the crew retuned after the vent installation and put everything back together, as though it had not been touched since the original construction had been completed. Have always been impressed with the professionalism of Jeff and the Henderson crew. This issue was not pushed to the back burner to be dealt with when convenient (or after all his previously scheduled work was completed), it was addressed quickly and efficiently (maybe 10 days in total). Jeff's attention to the matter further convinces me that Jeff and crew take great pride in the quality of their work and stand by their workmanship. My pleasure to recommend Jeff to anyone considering a renovation project. Also, a special call out to Curt at Synthesis Design who also stepped in to provide his expertise and opinion. To say Jeff Henderson was patient with us is an understatement. What I liked about the references Jeff provided is that many of them had used Henderson Construction a number of times, and all of them would hire Jeff again. Add us to that list. The workers showed up on time, worked hard and were always courteous and polite. Even the City inspectors commented on the high quality of the workmanship. We learned the hard way to do our due diligence and to ignore low bids. Also to ignore BBB ratings. Henderson Construction's bid was in the middle of the pack. We wish we'd found Henderson Construction when we first started our renovations, they were great from start to finish.

They are upper boxes, with no proper adjustable legs--chip on the door out of boxes. We hired Simon and his crew in 2024 to replace the cedar decking on our existing wood frame structure. We had chosen to use Trex and wanted to find an installer that had experience. Simon was good to work with and provided lot's of input and advice throughout the project. There were some construction modifications required and they were handled well and without fuss. They worked hard and finished on time. Pricing was reasonable and we are happy with the end result. Nearly 2 years in and the deck is still great.

We are very lucky that we stumbled upon Level One on the internet when we were looking for a…read morecontractor to renovate our small condo in Coal Harbour. None of our friends or families had any recent home renovations done so we relied on our own search on the web. I was in town in September 2008 for a week, interviewed a couple on the 2nd day in town and decided on Level One. The owner came to the condo with an assistant for an assessment, listened to what we wanted to have done and offered a few suggestions. I was given a quote within just a couple of days. After agreeing to the contract, the demolition started the following week! Although it was a small one-bedroom condo, we had our kitchen torn out and replaced with new appliances and cabinetry, all the flooring replaced with bamboo flooring, the bedroom closet gutted and rebuilt, half of the bathroom redone. The project was completed in just 2 months. We are very happy with the process and the quality of the work. We were still living in California at the time of the renovation so all communications were done either by email or over the phone. We received email and photo updates weekly if not more frequently. We were sought approvals for any changes to the plans so we were aware of all changes to the costs all the time. When we walked into our condo a few months later when we moved here, it was exactly how it looked in the picture, even better because we could see it in person. There was a slight problem with the bathroom sink a month after we moved in in March 2009. It was a new product so it needed some tweaking. The owner came back numerous times to make sure it worked. Not only that we were not charged for the visits, he gave us a bottle of wine for the inconvenience caused. We had other renovation projects in the past and Level One is the most reliable contractor we dealt with so far.
