I always see the same faces when I go here. The same group of women laughing over after-work drinks, the same old men reading the paper while downing a Guinness and the same friendly barmen chatting with the regulars. It's quite understandable why people come here again and again. If I'm by myself, and want to sit down with a glass of wine while reading my book I prefer a place where I can do that in peace and quiet and smoke at will. For that, Bolands is perfect. When I need my alone-time outside the house, I grab my book from the nightstand, head over to Bolands and hide away in the smoking area, which as Brian has mentioned, is amazing. The outdoor area is basically indoors, a room filled with character and plenty of seats. If it's raining heavily outside, you might get a drip or two on your head, but that's a tiny price to pay for such a smokers luxury.

Amazing historic old school pub off the beaten track. Be sure to check out the display case of all the historical items and photos , as well as talk to some of the old timers . Buy them a drink and get a nice history lesson.

The best thing about Rody Bolands is the amazing smoking area. It's an atrium between the outside wall and the inside wall. It used to have a large glass skylight at the top of the second floor height roof but when the ban came in the simply removed the glass making it like a wet room for smoking in. The area is decorated with old fashioned iron bicycles and under the remaining, tiny slither of roof there are coffee tables. I think the whole idea is very chic altogether. Inside, the two storey pub is traditional, comfortable and spacious. This pub would make a great local if you're situated nearby and if you're in the area on the day of a big game also a fun spot to hang out at.

Rody Bolands is a nice enough pub, but every time I come here it seems to be pretty much empty. And not just during the week either. Having said that, the pub is nice and cozy, despite being pretty big. The staff are nice and the pints are pretty decent as well. It's pretty much a standard local and you tend to see the same faces in here. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed and with a good crowd of friends you can probably have a good night here. Personally I would rather go to one of the pubs around the corner in Ranelagh.

Review Highlights - Rody Bolands Bar

Where this place really succeeds though is the amazing smoking area at the front, which actually just looks like part of the pub.

My husband and I stopped by for dinner and I ordered a caesar salad and their fish chowder. The caesar was great but my gosh the fish chowder and accompanying brown bread rocked my socks. So, much so, that I did what I never do--I revisited this spot more than once on the same trip (so many places to explore I almost never do this!). That fish chowder is craveable. They do live music on occasion as well and so we were able to enjoy that while sipping our Guinness. The prices are reasonable and the service is friendly. They aren't as small as they look at first glance, on one of our visits, we sat upstairs which has a second dining area. Amazing! Get to it!

Had to excuse ourselves from the table multiple times to freshen drinks. The food was good. Once again, absolute star was the Buffalo Wings! Ireland? I mean what??? Perfectly cooked, sauced nicely, just spectacular! The band was playing a mix and of Irish Music and American Rock songs played to Irish tunes. Very fun and well engaged with the crowd. The restaurant itself is cozy and very warm. A great night was had by all!

We added this to our trip last minute and we had a great time. Depending on where you're staying,…read moreit can be a little out there for visitors (we used our LEAP card to get nearby and walked the rest of the way). You'll check in for your meal first. There's a bar, so you can grab a pint or cocktail while you wait for them to seat you (if they're allowing guests inside already) - drinks are not included in your ticket price. Your menu is pretty limited (I'm guessing actual restaurant patrons might have a larger menu to order from), but our food was exactly what we were looking for on our first night in Ireland. There is a bar in the room where the musicians are, but it wasn't serving. So, if you want a pint in hand while you listen to music, I definitely recommend you have one with you before you head downstairs to be sure. Seating downstairs is first come, so don't linger too long if you're hoping to get up front near the band. They play an hour and a half or so of Irish pub familiar songs and the Irish dancer does about 3-4 dances while they play some specific songs. The band was interactive and lively. Once the show is over, the band goes to the back and has some of their merch for sale - shirts, CDs, etc. Good to have some Euros in hand for tipping them too, if you want. Honestly, we truly enjoyed this and had a great time. We did this on the same night we flew in and it set a nice vibe for our visit.

The dinner before was pretty good, but nothing special. Hghlights were the chocolate cake/sorbet, Irish stew, and vegetable soup; the main, not so much. But the entertainment was great and was a highlight of our entire trip! If I were to do it again, I'd get dinner somewhere else along the way and then come for the show.

The Waterloo Bar - Rustic Dublin Coddle (€20.50)

From the…read moreoutside, it plants itself confidently among Dublin's historic streets with a façade that promises hearty fare and good pints; inside, the space is warm and inviting with dark wood, exposed brick, beautiful murals, and comfortable seating that encourages lingering. My party of six walked in on a Wednesday night at around 7:30pm; at that time, the restaurant was about half-full, but filled up over the course of our meal. The menu has plenty of options ranging from healthy salads to traditional Irish dishes to your standard hearty pub fare. Drinks are also fairly priced here, and they have a good range of ales and lagers on tap (and of course, the classic Guinness). I opted for their Rustic Dublin Coddle (€20.50), which is a sizeable bowl of warming soup with two chargrilled, tender pork sausages, smoky bacon, soft potatoes, and onion, served with toasted sourdough bread. I appreciated the clean taste of the soup (made with an herbed chicken broth), which cut the rich fattiness of the sausage and bacon. I do wish the soup had been served with a more traditional Irish brown bread, but the sourdough was tasty nonetheless. Another great dish was the Waterloo Prime Irish Beef Burger (€19), which is a large patty of juicy, prime Irish beef served atop a toasted bun, with red onions, baby gem lettuce, pickled gherkins, and a tangy smoked Dublin cheddar. Some friends ordered the Superfood Salad (€15), which has a plethora of fresh vegetables and grains, but they noted it was quite bland, even with the French dressing. Yes, it's a bit on the pricey side for a pub, but I find Waterlooo Bar unique in that the atmosphere feels classic but lively: you get that laid-back Dublin pub energy with a hint of sophistication that makes it great for both casual meals and nights out. The food is solid if not stellar, the vibe is fun, and prices are reasonable for the area; a satisfying pick for an Irish pub dinner.
