My fiancé got an email that he had an appointment at 8:30am this morning. He has been going to BGA for years. When he checked in, the self check in system didn't recognize him, & he went to the front desk where he was told he didn't have an appointment. The system didn't even recognize him as a patient. Once he produced the email, then he was told that another email was supposed to have gone out to cancel his appointment. He didn't get this email, or any kind of call or communications letting him know his appointment was canceled. He had to take off work to attend this appointment. My advice if you use this office is to call & double check to see if you even have an appointment because they do not have good systems in place to let you know an appointment is canceled & your time will be wasted!

Doctor gave verbal instructions to discontinue a medicine. I requested written instructions- received sheet of paper that only said stop medicine. No instructions or contact phone numbers if complications arose from stopping medicine. Called to confirm Instructions , message says would be 48 hours before call returned. Ok, called procedure site who gave instructions to continue all medicines except anticoagulants and antihyperglycemics because they didn't have any information. Called after hours number, message quoted $50 fee to answer nonurgent questions. 1st call returned 72h, caller pulled clinic visit record- no mention of request to stop medicine in clinic visit record. Received call- was I interested in signing up for care coordination offered? Saw doctor again 2 minutes prior to sedation for procedure, finally confirmed course of action about drug after 6days. Had outpatient procedure after unpleasant 48 hour prep. Written discharge instructions explained, told not to call birmingham gastroenterology if problem occurs. Had fever 100.5, chills beginning that afternoon. That morning received text inquiring about vomiting, pain, fever would you like nurse to call back but it would be 48h later. Bingo! Received call 36h later, no interest in febrile episode. Received text to schedule post procedure visit but since they use one phone number for EVERYTHING have been unable to contact. I won't detail my irritation with billing. This will conclude my relationship.

After the procedure, a member of his staff advised me that he did not see any complications during his exam. I called his office a few days later and spoke with one of his staff members who relayed to Dr. Barranco my concern that I was still suffering from diarrhea. He prescribed a medication, then followed up with a different prescription a few days later after I saw no improvement from the first one. Both were of the same genre, known as "Flagel(?)", and can cause neuropathy in the extremities. Sadly, I was not warned of or about any side effects and took both medicines without researching to determine possible side effects or whether another medicine would be of greater value, relying solely on the advice and recommendations of Dr. Barranco. Within just a few days after starting the medications, I began having sensations of heat in my feet, together with numbness and tingling, but did not realize that the problems I was experiencing were caused by the medications prescribed by Dr. Barranco. Sadly, I am now unable to walk without using a crutch and must use a wheelchair. There is no known cure for neuropathy. I am left with no cure, no recourse, just the nagging question of why was I not warned? "If only...."
