The owners were very helpful is so many ways as we started our hike. Like, did you know that on Sundays there is very little open in the way of restaurants in Carlisle? But the people here know which ones are and filled us in. A total life saver at the end of 15 miles. Room was roomy and overlook the street but very bright and light. Bed was great and plenty of space to store things, if you are into that. Breakfast was pretty standard and packed lunches were very nice. I would come back and stay here to explore the rest of the area.

The walk up the hill to the B&B gives the reverse few and just the start of spectacular things you'll be seeing. This fortified farm house is amazing. Decorated with interesting art, comfortable rooms, a great living room and one of the best breakfasts we had on the wall hike. Sitting out in the afternoon sun on the part looking across the Valley at the river and the wall share the company of our hosts and other guests was a memorable part of our stay here. As well sharing some tea and beer watching the light change. The breakfast is very good, as I mentioned. The home made granola was excellent as well as the proper english. The bathroom was the best outfitted of any we had on the trip, being sure to include little things covering a wide range of bathroom times from across Europe and the US. Beds were comfortable and the rooms come with a section of teas and other treats that also make it so homey. Wish we had stayed longer but the walk along the wall was beckoning and some of the best scenery is east of here. Hope to come back some day!

Browhouses are a set of delightful self-catering cottages sitting on the bank of the Solway Firth…read morejust outside Gretna. We 1st stayed here in 2006 when we married at Gretna Green. We never imagined the place to be so beautiful. Fantastic views of England over the Firth. Ideal for birdwatching. No passing traffic as they're situated at the bottom of a very quiet country lane. From what we read in the visitors books at the cottages many return to stay there. We returned on out 1st wedding anniversary. The cottages have everything you need. The kitchens are very well equipt. Parking is ample & outside the cottages. The welcome from Jessie (the owner) was lovely & she provided fresh flowers & a bottle of wine, which can be enjoyed either in the garden at the back of the property or sitting on the bench outside the cottage, enjoying the Solway Firth. Right across the street from Border House, was Buck Hotel pub where we watched boxing Saturday night. Norman the owner let us bring in our Fish and chips from next door takeout Loon Chen Chinese. The next morning, Easter Sunday, Moira made us a beautiful breakfast with a stunning view of the river and church. We walked out our back door along the river, over the bridge, to the historic church. Was the most memorable Easter yet for us. Moira's cake: She had this wonderful traditional cake plated and sliced with fine china, in our spacious and lovely guest room. We were very happy that the Golden Fleece still had a room. Our happiness turned to joy when we saw the lovely room. Light and airy, with a great view and huge bathroom. We were even more pleased when we went down to dinner! British cuisine has soared in the last few decades, even in out of the way Inns. The menu was varied and everything we had was exceptionally good. The wine list was small but complete. We chose a bottle of excellent Latour Pinot Noir. We were treated to a delicious starter of lamb sausage in a mustard glaze and hummus. My wife ordered a cheese soufle as well. We were impressed by the quality and subtle tastes. You couldn't get better anywhere. For our mains, I had the roast lamb and my wife had a fillet of hake with spring potatoes. Both were delicious. After dinner, we moved out to the cozy bar lounge to read and finish our wine, then I capped the evening with a dessert called "poor knight's pudding". Made using a croissant and vanilla custard, served a la mode. Lovely room, great restaurant, friendly staff. Couldn't ask formore!

This deliciously baked bread was also brought to our table and soon after came the food! Everything was impeccable from the burgers and fish to the soups and salads everyone was impressed and very satisfied. If I could return I most definitely would. The wait staff was friendly and efficient and lastly the desserts were perfect! Highly recommend the sticky toffee pudding and the vanilla cheesecake!!

We had seen a take up sign for them and knowing we couldn't keep up with the days hike with a broken boot gave Mitchell a call thinking we would head into town and get a new boot. Well he knew of a little service station that sold boots! Took us there and got us back on the trail in less than 30 minutes. Totally saved our hike just as we were starting to get to the best part of the country side. And the price was right!

They are…read moreextremely knowledgeable about everything round about, from local activities, to B&B's, and where to visit. Everythingthat you would expect from a Tourist Information office. The office itself is located in the old Town Hall, which at first glance is difficult for a disabled person to access, however there is a lift provided. Inside, besides local advice, you can also purchase souvenirs, local maps, and book accommodation and local attractions. There is a notice board inside, from which upcoming events can be advertised. For local business' there is also a fax and photocopying service available, for a small fee.
