Ahoy there!…read more Operating a range of different boat trips up and down the River Tyne, the River Escapes experience is a great way of seeing Newcastle and the surrounding area from an unusual perspective! You can choose from a range of trips, from daytime tours from Newcastle to Newburn or to Tynemouth, or for the party animals, a range of evening party events. For those who suffer from seasickness, a boat trip plus alcohol and dancing may not be your first port of call (geddit?) So a group of us went on the Quay to Sea sightseeing tour on Sunday lunchtime. Sadly the glorious weather that had been with us the previous week decided to not show over the weekend, so I can imagine this would be superb if the weather was favourable. That aside, the boat we were on had plenty of indoor room and we did manage to brave the bracing maritime conditions (go with me here) from time-to-time. The trip started off with a run underneath the Millennium Bridge, which tilts specifically for this trip, that was a great sight to see. You then turn around, go back under the bridge and it takes around 90 minutes to pootle up the Tyne as far as Tynemouth piers. On the journey out, you are provided with a very knowledgeable commentator who highlights the different sights on each bank. One word of advice, if you're wanting to keep up, make sure you're sitting ahead of the commentator as the speed of the boat means us lot at the back were a couple of minutes behind and therefore had to play catch up all the time! As you get to Tynemouth, you can feel the gentle swell of the sea tides, then the boat turns around and heads back towards Newcastle. For the return leg, the commentator is available to answer any questions. You can bring your own food on board, on the boat we were on there is a bar serving hot and cold drinks, a range of alcoholic beverages (NB. see note above) and a limited hot food menu. The bacon roll was OK, little bit underwhelming given it was £2.90 and the brown sauce wasn't HP. But I digress... All in all, this is a great way to while away a few hours, especially if the weather is nice. Whilst not the most scenic of rivers in places, you learn so much about the heritage of the River Tyne and what made this region's industrial heritage to give us the brilliant place it is today. They also do family tickets, but this is probably not best suited to the littlest of little 'uns given you are spending 3 hours on a boat with no means of getting off. So why not don your sou' wester, get yourself down the Quayside and get your sea (river) legs on?!

If you are remotely considering a trip to Scotland to visit distilleries (be it any regions,…read moreHighland, Lowland, Speyside or Islay), you must contact Willie and Craig at Celtic legend/Whisky Tours Scotland! After doing some research on-line, I found their site and immediately contacted them to organize a tour with 8 people in the Islay region. We price compared options and their prices were right in line what one could expect finding accommodations and travel. When you factor in their tour guide service and everything else they set up, their prices were quite excellent! And the key being that they are so pleasant to deal with! Willie helped organize the Tour, and Craig was our guide. They also gave us numerous names of folks that toured with them to discuss some of their experiences. They will answer e-mail promptly. For a little background, we planned a larger scale trip that had us fly from Los Angeles to London, then flew into Glasgow (where Craig picked us up), went to Islay, were dropped off in Edinburgh by Craig, then flew to Dublin, then went back to Los Angeles. From the moment Craig picked us up at the airport in Glasgow, the tour was amazing! We spent the first part of the day venturing the countryside on our way to Islay, took the ferry to Islay, stayed the night and began the real tour in the morning! We had the most amazing tour at Laphroaig, went to Ardbeg for an amazing lunch (where the brave of us tried haggis and lamb burgers that were delicious!) , then went to see ruins of the oldest church in Islay (which was uniquely beautiful) and we concluded our tour day with a fun tour at Lagavulin. We then had some delicious dinner at Bridgend. The next day had us go to Bruichladdich, then off to Finlaggin to see the amazing ruins by the sea, then to Kilchomen for some tasty food for lunch, and lastly to Bowmore for the grand finale! The last day was a travel day to Edinburgh, where Craig stopped at many spots along the way for all of us to soak in. Craig was the kindest and nicest guide one could ask for! He was very tolerant of all the odd personalities of our tour group, me especially! We planned out our trip for about 9 months before actually going. We went this past July 2011. Be prepared to pay some deposits to lock in an amazing stay. I simply cannot recommend Celtic legend/Whisky Tours Scotland enough to anyone considering such a trek! Please look Willie and Craig up! They will treat you well! All of us in our group cannot thank them enough for the most amazing experience! (...and a few of the people in the group don't even drink!)

Okay, here is the deal. I would surely have gave this property 5 stars except for the nasty…read morerestaurant called Karbon which is part of the facility. Yelp does not have the restaurant listed separately. 1st the hotel; sparkling clean, newly built. Can't find a negative. Front desk wonderful and attentive. It is located next to the local football stadium, so I am sure it gets a little crazy around game day. We stayed here 5 days without a problem. It is a little bit of a walk from the city center but we learned to take the 56 bus to the Sunderland Interchange with the bus stop being a two minute walk from the front door of the hotel. 2nd, the restaurant; This place is bad, bad, bad. They had three chances to get it right and couldn't. It's looks will deceive you. Again, newly built since it is part of the hotel. Very nicely laid out and furnished. After that nothing good can be said. First morning they had a bus tour in. The buffet food trays were empty and none of the help seemed to have a clue. Second morning they couldn't make an omelet, the middle was raw, nasty. When I complain to waitress all she could keep saying is she would get another. I couldn't afford to get salmonella. Third try room service for dinner after a long 14 hr day. Nasty chicken caesar salad featuring wilted lettuce and undercooked chicken. All I can say is don't let the looks of the place fool you. Go to the McDonalds right around the corner if you don't want to be sick.
