I took my 5 month old puppy who was having seizures to Dr. Schueler back in September 2016. At first, I thought he was OK and I planned to have him do an MRI and spinal tap the following week. After being told by the doctor that I could drop my dog off early (6:30am) so I could get to work in Baltimore, I was yelled at by the office staff who claimed that this was not true... Disgusted with the way I was spoken to, I found another neurologist in Catonsville. The difference between Dr. Schueler's exam and the other veterinary neurologist was remarkable. My dog was actually evaluated! Unlike Dr. Schueler, this doctor was interested in more than just money. I found out a spinal tap was not immediately necessary. My dog went for an MRI, which was performed at medical facility instead of in a small vet office. Ask Dr. Schueler about the MRIs he performs compared to MRIs available at other facilities. I was referred to Dr. Schueler in Oct 2022. The emergent vet in Hagerstown and regular vet in Emmitsburg told me to put my little dog down because she had brain surgery. After meeting with Dr. Schueler and showing him a video of how she acted during one of her episodes, he said she is far from euthanasia. He knew right away it was Chiari Malformation. He took a lot off my shoulders since then. We go see him every once in a while, because my Furbay is doing so well on the medicine he has her on. I would recommend Dr Schueler to anyone. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Schueler and his staff. Our dog was unable to walk on her back left leg and her muscles were deteriorating quickly. She was originally thought to have an ACL tear and unfortunately that was not the case and the orthopedic vet told us he believed it was a neurological issue. I called two neurological vets but couldn't get an appointment for almost a month. Our vet also referred us to Dr. Schueler and his office got us an appointment in just a few days and scheduled surgery the following week. Everyone was very friendly and professional, they called to check on our dog several times after her surgery and were always extremely helpful answering all our questions. In June 2021 on a Sunday, my dog suffered what appeared to be a neurological related episode with severe head tilt, rapid eye movement and unstable mobility. What appeared to be a neurological issue, I called every 24 hour vet center and none had access to a neurologist either by phone or in person. Most were not helpful and informed me there was probably little they could do. On my own, I called every vet neurologist within 3 hours of my home. Not one returned the call with the exception of Dr. Scheuler who returned my call within 10 minutes. I explained what happened and he advised me to go to a 24 hour emergency center so he could get stabilized and he would see me at 8:00 a.m. the following morning. I did so; the 24 hour facility was accommodating, but intimated that it appeared there was not a lot of hope. I left with my pet and medication. The next day, we drove to Westminster, Md, a 90 min trip. Dr. Scheuler's staff was welcoming and focused. That morning, Dr. Scheuler had two emergencies, but found the time to examine our dog. He detailed next steps to get more definitive answers and all potential outcomes. His staff produced a written estimate, asked if we were comfortable with the plan and cost - (just like any other profession whether it be a dentist or construction) and I felt I wanted to proceed one step at a time, starting with the MRI. The bill was adjusted and treatment was scheduled. Prior to our dog being placed under anesthesia for the MRI, Dr. Scheuler again went over what the different outcomes may be and that he would confer with us with the results after the MRI. Expecting the worse, we were quite nervous to hear what he had found. Dr. Scheuler was direct but compassionate and realistic in his delivery. He developed a plan which he said had good results with other patients and we elected to move forward with it. His examination also revealed other issues we were not aware of. Within a week, our dog was ambulatory, head tilt gone, eye movement gone and was adjusting to his new diet. I had to call in daily for updates which eventually went to weekly, biweekly, etc. Questions were answered within 24 hours; urgent questions were answered promptly. It has been nine months since his first visit and has had his third follow up visit. Unfortunately, although he is neurologically stable without worsening, there appears to be other issues going on with our older dog affecting his heart and possibly liver. Dr. Scheuler referred us to CVCA and our dog's in-depth blood panels will be sent to the cardiologist. I like Dr. Scheuler; I like his staff. I expect and appreciate direct, professional communication; I have received this from Dr. Scheuler and his staff. He delivers the facts and compassionately and realistically reviews next steps and direction. Dr. Scheuler has given our Mackie the best care and advice possible. One of the many things I like about Dr. Scheuler is that he genuinely understands how all the systems work together - cause and effect. When issues outside of neurology become present and require expertise in another medical area, he does not hesitate and assists in directing you to the best possible care. I don't know how much longer we will have our wonderful senior dog Mackie, but one thing is certain, and that is he would not be here now if it weren't for Dr. Scheuler. read more

We were referred to Dr. Schueler by the Animal ER. I was devastated with the sudden immobility of our little pup and his suffering. I thought the car ride from Bel Air, MD to Westminster would never end; however, I was calmed by their welcoming demeanor and the care & attention given to my pup. Additionally, the ER had me transport my pup with a catheter and another port in his leg. Dr. Schueler immediately made the observation that our pup also had a UTI for which he would be treated and added that they would remove the catheter, etc. I'm grateful that Dr. Schueler was able to examine/assess the needs of our little one and provide options for future care. I particularly appreciated he gave me the scope of what to expect without glorifying or leaning in any direction.The great part is I thought I made the best decision and left assuming surgery was the route to take, but after a few hours to calm my emotions, I decided with option two and called the office to inform them. Understandingly they welcomed my choice and over the course of a week - they called to check-in, phoned-in prescriptions and made alterations as needed. There is such an ease in dealing with this office especially for a pet parent dealing with health issues. I'm hoping for positive developments with continued care. Avoid this neurologist! The minute he thinks your not going to be able to afford close to 9,000 for testing from him that he said is, "not definitive." He becomes arrogant and dismissive. I wanted to talk about medications. Our regular vet, who I think does a great job with our dog, prescribed seizure meds and I thought I should go to him for more advice and medication adjustments. Do not take your pet to Schueler. Find a different veterinary neurologist. Sometimes reviews online tend to be only the negative and you should take them with a grain of salt. With this vet, however, the truth is in the negativity and it is warranted. If you don't believe me, then believe the Maryland Board of Veterinarians. Go to this website - https://mda.maryland.gov/vetboard/Pages/disciplinary_actions.aspx. About half way down the page is a link to the disciplinary actions published by the Maryland Board. Pull up the link and look for Schueler's name. There is an attachment, 17-51, which sets forth the Consent Agreement in which the Board fined Schueler and put him on probation. It also sets forth the facts that led to this action. As for us, we paid him thousands of dollars to take care of our dog. Thousands of dollars misspent. When confronted with our concerns and issues, instead of responding as a professional with integrity who will do the right thing, we hit a brick wall. They already had our money and had no intention of making things right with us. read more

Dr. Schueler is one of the best vets. He was the only vet that could give us an answer, and perform a procedure for our dog. Our dog healed quickly, and she was so happy. He perform several different procedures on our dog. He is always upfront and honest with the outcome, but he is very optimistic. His staff even took the time to text us pictures of our pup when she had to stay the night after surgery. Our dog loves him and his staff, and so do we! read more

Go anywhere else but here. He said our dog needed back surgery for a walking issue. He said the cost was $5000. We paid him. He said he needed to keep the dog for 3 days before the surgery because she wasn't well enough. $1000 a day more. We paid him $3000 more dollars. He said the dog must have a MRI before surgery. We paid him $1500 dollars more. All in all, we paid him a total of $13000. How's the dog? She never came home, she died in his office. read more

I had my English Bulldog to see Dr. Schueler In 2016 for an FCE. I was fortunate enough to find a neurosurgeon that also has English bulldogs and is very knowledgeable when it comes to their issues. Dr. Schueler spent a very long time with us during the examination and explained what had occurred, and how he didn't recommend performing surgery unless absolutely necessary, and instead he monitored Liam overnight to see if there was any change in his condition. The following day we picked up Liam and his prescription and were sent away feeling confident that he was under excellent care by one of the best neurosurgeon in the United States. It's been years since we needed Dr. Schueler's Services, but if Liam ever had another FCE or other neurological issue, I would without hesitation have Dr. Schueler treat him. If you ever have any neurological issue with your pet, I highly recommend you see Dr. Schueler, for he's the best. read more

Super sweet staff and the Dr is definitely more concerned with putting the animal through only the minimum, necessary treatments/tests. He talked us out of getting an MRI when our Dalmatian was injured because he believed that the dog had potential to get better and wanted us to save the time and money. Turns out the MRI was needed, but Dr. Schueler was very knowledgable and even a bit disappointed that Dewie wasn't better yet. He warned us the results may not say anything about the dogs condition, and he has always tried to do whats best and most comfortable for both the owner and patient. read more

This has been the second time I have had to utilize the services of Dr Schueler and have once again been confident in the care rendered to my pet. This big man with a laugh and voice as big as all outdoors was gentle and interested in my teacup pommie. I called him late at night because of a emergency( seizures) and he returned my call in 10 minutes! My physician isn't even close to being that prompt. He called ahead to the emergency clinic and arranged care for my dog. When my pommie saw him the next day he spent a great deal of time with us in looking at options. We took our dog to see Ronald Schueler after our vet prescribed seizure medication for our dog. I saw several bad reviews between google and other sources so I was hesitant because I wanted better answers than I was getting from my vet. We went in the middle of the shut down so we were not able to go into the office with our dog. The whole process was so smooth they came out to the car and talked with us. Took our dog in and performed an exam. Dr Schueler and a vet tech came back out to the car to have another conversation with us. He was friendly and informative. The exam was $195 which is a bit higher than I expected, but he is a specialist and when you go to the doctor you pay more for a specialist. We were not pushed into other more expensive procedures or visits. I spoke with another person who also sees Dr Schueler and he has been able to call him in the middle of the night when his dog has gone to the ER for seizures. If we have to we will be back to see Dr Schueler to continue treatment of our dog's epilepsy. read more

This vet was rude and had no bedside manners. He didn't introduce himself and instead immediately asked if I had him on speaker phone, which I was about to tell him I did because my husband was outside due to Covid restrictions. (I was setting it up when the vet walked in and was telling my husband "I'll put you on speaker".) I explained to him what brought us in and what medications we had our dog on. His physical exam was a total of about 2 minutes and he didn't explain it at all, which one would think he would since I just presented him with my partially paralyzed pet who he might have been performing surgery on later. After the short exam, he just launched into talking about surgery, after he went on and on. I asked him what he thought the surgical outcome would be. I added that I thought he didn't do the test for deep nerves. He then became very rude and told me that he had, but insisted that he do it again so that he could "show me". He told me that he doesn't appreciate my comment and that he takes his job very seriously. A normal person might have said, "Oh, yes, I did test it when I was holding his paw" instead of acting like a Neanderthal. He then tested my dog again, this time when the dog showed signs of feeling the pain and yelped, the vet then proceeded to say that he "normally doesn't like to hurt dogs" but since I insisted he show me and because I accused him of not doing his job, he had to hurt my dog. He then upped the rudeness by getting into a staring contest with me - I was very angry at his treatment of me and my dog, and I really couldn't believe that this man who claims to be a professional was behaving in this way. Granted, I participated, but I'm dealing with the trauma of our beloved pet being paralyzed and potentially needing surgery. When my husband tried talking to him over speaker phone - while standing just feet outside the ground floor window where he could see the entire room, the vet actually told my husband he couldn't talk because he was "having a moment" with me (the staring contest). His idea of an exam was NOTHING. We could have done it over the phone, quite honestly. A general exam at my regular vet's office is more thorough. We sat outside for probably an hour trying to decide what the best course of action for us and our pet was. We opted for not doing the surgery, though honestly, if Ronald Schueler had been a better person, we might have gone forward with it. Nobody should ever go to Ronald Schueler. He treats people terribly and was rude to his staff as well. I'm considering changing my regular vet as well just because they referred us to him. read more

This review is of their rehab or actually lack of rehab. The Dr, hides in his office so can't comment on him. I began taking my dog for rehab which was to include swimming and laser therapy a few weeks ago. It was sold as a package. He got the laser therapy and swim exactly once. I showed up the next time and I was told the therapist went home sick and that my dog would only get swimming. They should have called to let me know but I accepted the explanation and made another appointment. Again I showed up and a new excuse...we decided to do the laser after all of him swimming sessions are over without any explanation of where the therapist was (obviously) no longer working there, no phone call beforehand to tell me anything and had to wait nearly 30 minutes while everyone hid in their offices. I saw exactly 1 person who was a blithering idiot while I was there. Would absolutely NOT RECOMMEND them since there is absolutely no common courtesy or the ability to provide the services they advertise. read more

Stay away. You think when you walk in to his nice office and staff you're going to get quality tests and results. Thats not the case. $8k+ later and he still has no idra whats wrong with my dog, he doesnt communicate at all with whats going on. He takes advantage of your situation when your pet is sick and you're emotional. Runs tests that arent related to the symptoms. And in the end forces you to go to another neurologist who tells you that he doesnt even understand what he was doing, that he ran tests not even related to what the symptoms were. Then the MRI he charged $2200 from is so bad that he can't even understand how he was able to read it and that it has to be done again because the quality was so bad. When you see the images taken they are so bad no wonder he couldn't find a diagnosis. Not to mention the spinal fluid was tested in a human hospital not a vetinary one and a cytologist never looked at it so the results on his report are not even accurate. Stay away and keep your pets away. He's only worried about hiw much money he can get out of you and based on the quality of his reports and machines used I wouldn't pay him a penny for them. He's a complete rip off. Had I taken my dog to the current neurologist the first time (which I didnt know about until recently) my bill would have been $3400 (from the neurologists mouth). He should be ashamed of himself for taking advantage of people. Stay away! I will also let the vet that recommended him know what a rip off he is. read more
