While there everyone was certainly friendly but once I had problems with both my MA and NC tax returns it completely changed. They did not provide MA with all the docs they needed even though we had provided everything to Howard. I brought to their attention and got nowhere, and I was the one who had to call MA and get it straightened out. The worse by far was NC Howard Tax Service gave me a payment voucher for $41 so you can imagine my surprise when I received a notice from NCDOR saying I owed them an additional $1500. This was by far more serious, and I promptly brought to Wendell with Howard Tax services attention. I called no less than 8 times over the last four weeks and was told I would get a call back and as of 9/23 I have yet to receive that call. I even went into the office and spoke with Wendell last week and he assured me he would give me a call back on Saturday 9/21 because he would be in the office he also said that it was their error and Howard Tax Service would pay the penalty and interest that we now owed. You guessed it I never got that call, and I paid NCDOT this morning to avoid any additional fees being applied. I am letting everyone know do not use these guys if they make a mistake, you will be on you own. They will promise to call and own their mistake, but they will NOT follow through I know!!!! I would not have given them any stars but at a minimum you have to give one.

Ms. McNary sent in a letter and documentation as to why we disagreed. She had done a quick calculation that showed we were owed even more money by the IRS. The IRS responded by dropping our amount to $2200. This all started the very beginning of June 2018. Couldn't get her to return phone calls or emails. Now it is the end of December 2018 and we just received another IRS notice that they have charged us an additional $2000 in penalties and interest because for the last 6 months Ms. McNary has NOT taken care of filing our amended return. She has created more financial distress for us by dragging her lazy feet and not getting our amendment done. We will now be going to H&R Block because at least they will do the amendment right away and maybe we can start cleaning up this mess. We have filed a complaint with the BBB and the North Carolina State Board of CPA's. We are pushing for her to pay that extra $2000 since it is completely her fault we got charged with it, because if she had done our amendment in a reasonable and timely manner, those charges would not exist. Do not use this uncaring and unremorseful lady.

Since his passing in October of 2025, the process for resolving the trust has been very difficult. it's going to cost us around $8500 additionally after the initial $5000, and we have no communication. It would have been faster and cheaper to have a will. The notice to creditors has maybe still not happened, almost 6 months later, or at least we have not been told. I could give names of those within Strauss who have been unresponsive, but I would rather not.

Our father set up a trust with Strauss Attorneys, PLLC. He died over two years ago and we were…read moretold that Dad's assets should be easy to distribute and it should take less than a year to close everything. We still have not received all the funds. Although we are successfully retired college graduates, we have been told by estate lawyers here in Michigan that dad's trust was written to specify subtrusts (with Strauss as trustee) that are appropriate for beneficiaries who are drug addicts or incapacitated in some way. Initially Strauss delayed putting a notice to creditors in the paper (typically done a week or two after death) for over six months, delaying the partial distribution which we got eleven months after dad died. They remediated the subtrust issue by generating new subtrusts at our expense - another half a year. These apparently are paying taxes at the maximum possible rate because there are no K1s. Every quarter fees are taken from the trust but there is no transparency, no accounting statements despite many requests, and no end to the delays. We are frustrated beyond description and starting to wonder if an employee has absconded with the funds. Hoping it doesn't drag on to 2026. I wish we had hired a different North Carolina law firm long ago and made them trustee.
