We had a girls weekend this passed weekend. Last minute all 7 of us girls decided we wanted to book some spa treatments! When I called on Thursday evening they were so kind and willing to figure out how to get us all in. We had a wonderful Saturday. The pedicures were great. The facials were amazing! One of the girls loved their hot stone massage! Tracy knows her stuff! We look forward to booking again in the near future during another girls weekend away! The staff were all friendly & welcoming upon arrival. . I booked a couples massage & although my husband's was great mine was not! I just couldn't relax & was hoping w/each passing moment it would get better unfortunately it did not. Very disappointed! My girl was nice but.... massage not so good. My rating is based on local salons -- it's not NYC but it's definitely 5-star for local service and for price. The staff was super friendly and accommodating and booked me for 8am on a Saturday -- a Godsend -- they were busy. Bonnie worked wonders with a great cut on my sad, baby-fine hair -- not many can achieve that miracle. She also gave me great suggestions for local eateries. Bonus! What a doll. I've read reviews for most MWV services and restaurants and the negative ones seem to be written by people who have unrealistic demands and expectations. Root Cellar is in town, has Aveda products (for Aveda devotees), and I got a great haircut. Try not to believe the naysayers. Just book an appt and judge for yourself. read more

I got my hair done a few weeks ago out of town and the hair dresser thought it was a good idea to throw what I thought were going to be baby lights throughout my brown hair. Turns out I had two giant blonde streaks right in the front when I walked out of there. I knew I needed to go to the root cellar and let them work their magic!!! Went here for the 1st time on 2/17/2015. I am from out of town and ended up staying in the area longer than I planned. I really needed to get my roots done & bangs trimmed. I pick this place because it is an Aveda Salon & also because I like the name of the place, Root Cellar...I needed to get my roots done & figured it was fate! I called on Monday, even though I knew they were closed, expecting to leave a message. Surprisingly, some one (I think Andrea) picked up the phone. I explained my situation & she pleasantly took my info & made my reservation for the next day. When I arrived, I was greeted promptly and pleasantly, even though they seemed quite busy for the middle of the day on a Tuesday. While they were notifying my stylist (Sarah) that I had arrived, I was able to browse around. Besides salon products (not only Aveda), they also have some jewelry, scarves, and other accessories for sale. Sarah greeted & welcomed me. She escorted me to her chair and asked if I wanted any coffee/tea. Then proceed to ask me what I needed/wanted. She understood I did not want a full hair cut (I didn't want to get my usual stylist at home upset). She quickly got my color ready and started right away. As I was waiting for the color to set, a couple of ladies came by to welcome me again & see if I needed anything (tea, water, mag, etc.). I thought that was so nice. My hair was washed and bangs trimmed. Sarah explained she would trim just a little & would trim more if needed after they were dried. They were perfect! As she was drying my hair we chatted about common interests and local goings-on. All in all, it was a great experience and I look forward to making the Root Cellar my salon when I move to the area. My wife was very disappointed with the style and makeup for our wedding. They both made her look 10 years OLDER! Too heavy and pale on the base and the hairstyle was very senior looking. Definitely not what you would do for a wedding. I love my wife either way, but wasn't happy to see her so unhappy. (Response to owners comment below): I do not know what you mean by a "trial"? We did not do a trial. We were traveling on a road trip and stayed only a couple nights for our wedding, though this was booked in advance. Maybe you are thinking of someone else as this actually occurred over a year ago. My (now) wife says she did speak up while makeup and hair were being done but no one was listening. I do appreciate though when an owner makes an effort to give feedback. read more

I've never "yelped" before but DO NOT get a spray tan from here. I've been twice, once for prom which came out super orange and very streaky. Ruined prom for me. I tried it again to see maybe if it would be better and it came out much worse then before. It was during the summer and I had to wear jeans and covered toed shoes for a week because it was super orange and streaky. I wore lose clothing there, didn't shower, followed all the instructions asked and it still came out awful. I will say as a positive, staff was friendly & the place itself is nice. Just don't attempt to get a spray tan here. read more

I have been going to the Root Cellar for a little while now. I always have my hair cut and colored by Susan and I'm very happy with it. My hair is wavy and every stylist I've ever had blow dries it and it's too flat looking. Susan is able to dry it just the way I like it. Today I had my first facial with Tracy. I have been getting facials for about 40 years. This was one of the best facials I've ever had and the price was VERY reasonable. read more

My first visit ever to this salon was the morning of my wedding. Three days before I made an appointment just to get my hair styled. Not a problem, even though they were quite busy with other weddings. Wasn't even thinking about having my make up done but when they suggested it, I barely hesitated and was glad I didn't. Thanks to Danielle for a great hairstyle and thanks to Tracy for a wonderful make-up job. I got a lot of compliments that day and my pictures came out great. Will be back. read more

I came here on a trial visit for my wedding. I was disappointed that the stylist wasn't willing to use clip-in hair. She claimed it was not possible with an up-do, though in my experience other salons have managed. Despite the setback, the stylist did a good job of quickly trying out a few hairstyles for me. She listened to my feedback and eventually found something I was happy with. We also did a makeup trial but that did not go well. The makeup was applied so heavily I felt like a mime. After trying to re-communicate my preferences the stylist told me my "ideas are conflicting." In the end I decided to go elsewhere for my wedding day. I didn't trust the makeup experience would get better, and the resistance to using clip-in hair was a deal breaker. For regular cuts and styles I would consider returning. read more

This salon is very nice inside although it is run very poorly. I made an appointment months in advance for a wash and set a process with rollers and under the dryer. I confirmed two weeks before and again two days before . This was for my wedding in North Conway and traveled 3 hours there . The woman booked me with robin who she said is her top stylist .well the day of they had a cancellation and called me asked if IDE like to come earlier . So I did . Well I walked in had to introduce myself to the receptionist who claimed to be the owner days later. Why didn't she introduce herself as the owner ? Weird . Robin came in late appearing to possibly be under the influence . Then tells me they don't know where the rollers are and only have ones for short hair . Do the top stylist and owner can't fine rollers? They should have been prepared . I would not recommend this place especially to my family up there. Anyways I did my own hair and my wedding day was beautiful. My advice is to invest in rollers it's a salon. read more

First time visit to this salon. Went for a partial foil/hi-lights. I've been having my hair (Blonde) foiled for the past 30 years. I had many blonde (light & dark) tones which blended nicely to look natural. Stylist decided that I needed my "roots" treated, then put about only 5 foils around the top of my head. I told her that I had NEVER had my "roots" treated, I just got full and partial foils for the past 30 years. She insisted that the color matched and would blend. The color I ended up with was about 2 shades darker than I started with and very brassy. Worst color ever and now it will take many treatments with my regular stylist to get my hair back to the pretty blonde it was. read more

If I could provide negative stars I would. HORRIBLE! DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE WITH YOUR WEDDING! I had several conversations with Darlene in which we discussed what I needed for my bridal party and me and was given prices for all services as well as the TRAVEL FEE which I agreed to. The day of my wedding came and there was no word from anyone. I called the salon several times and there was no answer. Over an hour later after my wedding coordinator and I scrambled around trying to get a hold of someone there, Darlene indicated that I was wrong and my entire bridal party (7 girls) were supposedly meant to travel to the salon for their services. That's not true, but even if it was, why didn't anyone answer when I called, why didn't anyone call me? REMINDER--YOU'RE IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE THE PROFESSIONAL, IT WAS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET A HOLD OF ME NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND! Luckily, I have amazing friends and happened to have a super talented make-up artist as a guest so the day was perfect anyway but it was certainly WITH NO HELP FROM THESE PEOPLE. Complete and total lack of professionalism or dependability---find another line of work. I sincerely hope no one you love EVER has to deal with the disappointment you brought me on the most important day of my life. read more
