This coffee shop is in a nice space...brick walls, tin ceiling... They have a few items displayed that appear to be locally made by artists. Things like macramé plant hangers, art candles and jewelry. I love to see collaboration like that. They have a fairly extensive menu of coffee drinks and we had a snickers and a snickerdoodle coffee. They were both well executed and had that over the top sweetness many people love. We also ordered crêpes. I was a little disappointed that there were no savory crepes on the menu but I have quite a sweet tooth so my guest and I tried the gorilla crepes. They were made with bananas, Nutella, marshmallow cream, whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle. It was very decadent as there was lots of filling! Very rich. In hindsight, since they did not have savory items, I wish we would've split it and ordered a bagel. Both my guest and I usually have no problem "cleaning our plates" but this crepe had filling at least 1/2 inch high! The bananas used tasted a little "green" but were not too unripe. The sad thing was, as is typical in most coffee shops, they yell out the items you've ordered and you go pick them up. Well, even though it wasn't busy someone snagged our order. We figured it out later when the next gorilla crepe was called and not a second one. I mentioned to the wait staff that this sort of confusion could be easily resolved if they called out peoples' names instead of what they ordered. "We do that when we're busy" was their response. Excuse me? Just now someone was confused with your system as evidenced by the banana foster crepe left unclaimed on the counter...My reply was I am sorry, it would've been helpful right now! I am so sensitive to how hard many jobs are and that people are frustrated with low pay these days... But their response did not seem appropriate! They immediately did start making the replacement. Unfortunately they take a bit of time to make so we both had drank all our coffee before the first crepe came and my guest had finished his before mine came. read more

It's graduation weekend at Pittsburg State University and I chose this coffee shop to refuel our crew after a late evening of celebrations and libations. I slipped in to pick up 7 beverages and 6 pastries to go. The coffee shop aesthetic is light, clean, and inviting. There was one small group in line in front of me so it didn't take to order. Two frappes, two iced drinks, and three hot drinks. Three assorted muffins and three cinnamon rolls. (Asked to not have the food heated to save time) I anticipated having a complete order made ready and packaged to be carried on the short walk back to the apartment. Instead the following occurred: I received the two cups to make the drip coffee. And while it was clearly my first time in (based on my questions and how I ordered) the barista didn't indicate where to find the coffee. After a search around the space, I found the carafes. For the specialty drinks I would have to wait. No problem. Two frappes came out first. And nothing else. Realizing this was going to be each item for itself, I picked them up and moved them to a table not far from the counter, next to the two drip coffees. After about ten minutes, one of the iced drinks came out alongside someone else's beverage. Confused, I stood back to see if that person maybe had ordered the same thing but no, she just picked up the one drink. Now at this point I'm wondering why they don't use names to avoid confusion if they are putting multiple orders up at the same time. Anyway, I moved the iced drink next to the other four and wondered if they've even have drink trays since no one has offered. Back to waiting. After another four to five minutes the third hot drink, a London fog comes up alongside an iced London Fog. Again, I'm wondering if these are someone else's order since they came up together. No one appears so I take the hot drink and the person behind the counter asks me why I didn't take the iced London Fog. I said, "I only order one and it was hot." She said okay and as I went to carry this over to the group of drinks I start to wonder if I was charged for it. So I walk back over and ask if I was charged for two teas. She said, "I don't know but I will check for you." I said, "Thank you and may I have two drink trays." She looked at me for a moment and inquired, "Two???" I replied, "Yes, please. I have seven drinks and I'm carrying them by myself." She hands me the drink trays. It's another five minutes before the last iced coffee comes up and again it comes out with someone else's order. It's now been more than twenty minutes to receive all seven drinks and there's no indication if the food is coming. I look down at the drinks and the frappes have separated - frothy solid on top, liquid on the bottom. Figure at this point the recipients of those drinks will have to just deal with stirring and having a less-frappe frappe. I look around the counter and see someone bagging the six pastries, each in a little brown bag and immediately I know they will likely be put on the counter loose. Growing a little impatient at this point, I watch the progress and as she heads towards the end of the counter with the six individual items, clearly ready to toss them there and move away quickly, I meet her and say, "Hold on please, I ordered seven drinks and these six items - I really do need them bagged so I can carry everything down the street." She says nothing, stalks off grabs a used grocery bag, tosses it on the counter and walks away leaving me to bag it myself. This while the seven other items are sitting unattended at the table where I've been waiting patiently. I was not rude, unkind, and used courteous language. I just couldn't understand why they had zero interest in being helpful much less logical in their approach to making a to-go order ready for transport. About the quality of the products: Cinnamon rolls were good, not great. Chocolate muffins tasted off and the recipients wouldn't eat them. The other muffin (banana or cinnamon or something like that) was the one hit item in the order. Highly recommended by the person who ate it. London fog was over sugared. Iced Cookie Monster - a hit. Iced Nutella coffee - good, not great. Black drip coffee - good. Frappes we're absolutely melted and texture was off so we won't know for sure whether they would be recommended or not. The crepe menu looked really good and I debated ordering 2 of each of the four sweet crepes to go. I opted against it to save time which I'm glad because it took 30 mins to get the coffee and non-heated pastries. I watched one crepe being prepared while I was waiting and one crepe took so long that I was absolutely relieved I did not order them. If you're one or two people with one or two items - your experience may be spectacular. With a moderate or slightly larger order, or having more than 2 people in your party, you may want to consider going somewhere else. read more

I used to enjoy coming here. Really liked their crepes and signature drinks. But as other reviewers have mentioned, their ordering and pickup process is not the best. The last time I visited Root I used their online ordering system to place my order. It was a Saturday morning and they were busy as expected. My friend and I waited over 30 minutes and never heard our order called. When we went to the counter to ask they didn't show our orders in the que and it was determined that someone else took ours. We then had to wait another 15 minutes for them to make ours. They didn't charge us again, but it was frustrating having to wait that long. They should put names on cups when taking the order like other coffee shops do to cut out the confusion. I haven't been back since this incident and not sure if I ever will. read more

We were in town for a recruiting event and discovered Root Coffeehouse. Located in the downtown area this place is to die for! First off it is the cutest coffeehouse I have seen in ages and the customer service is on point! I ordered a cold brew and a turkey/cheddar empanada and both were fantastic. Most empanadas found in restaurants are thick and overdone, but this one was so flaky and delicious -- it was perfection. Highly recommend a visit to this place, even if you're only in town once a year. read more

Make-your-own gluten free crepes are SO GOOD! The workers really fill and top your crepes so the price seemed completely worth it!! We enjoyed the tasty crepes.. mine was made with cashew butter and banana filling, topped with berries. The atmosphere was great and the bathrooms were super clean. I decided to try this coffee shop after visiting friends in the area and based on the reviews on Yelp. Overall, not a bad spot for coffee and for hanging out with friends. They provide free Wifi and hours are pretty decent for a small college town. One of the staff members (when I went) was pleasant and friendly, while the other was more rude and not personable. They have variety of flavors to choose from for their Frappes and other assorted drinks. They obviously have their "favorite" or repeat costumers, which is evident with the way the staff treat you vs those costumers when ordering. Being from a larger city, the coffee shop isn't horrible for the city it's in nor is it anything special. Definitely gets loud if you're trying to study or have down time. Decided to go in a second time and wasn't pleased with the service. The barista/staff didn't answer if my questions when I was asking the differences between coffee flavors and instead got side track. Way too loud to get work down, and barely any outlets for your computer. read more

I was in Pittsburg, KS on business and found this coffeehouse to have a latte and something to eat. This is not something you would expect in a smaller city in the middle of Kansas. And what a find! This place is so cool! There is a lot of atmosphere and decor. The high ceiling with the 1920's tin roof is very cool. I had a latte and a peanut butter & banana crepe. I am blown away at how I can order the same drink at various coffee places and have such a vast difference in taste. The latte I had here was fantastic! Of the best I have ever had. The crepe was great! Fresh and flavorful. The peanut butter was warm and poured onto the crepe. It was really good stuff! Whoever opened this restaurant, please open one in St. Paul, MN. My husband and I meet here for lunch at least once a week to get fancy coffee and enjoy the people, employees and atmosphere. the scenery is always changing here, with the art on the walls, jewelry and t-shirts they sell, and some of the beautiful stained glass they have displayed hanging on the walls in the front. The owners are sooooo nice - and the locals who work there and regulars who stop in for coffees, crepes and sweet treats are just the best. What a great coffeehouse!!! These pretty girls are SO friendly and pleasant! I've been sitting here for a couple of hours and the traffic is constant. The atmosphere is shabby chic... It's a nice, clean, well decorated place. The service was friendly and efficient. They have a great variety of coffees. I had the "Bearded Lady". It was nice and bold but not bitter. Try a crepe. They are delicious. I had the "Berry Happy" and Deb had a "Bananas Foster" crepe. Both were well presented and plenty to eat. I didn't use it, but it appeared they had lots of bandwidth on their Wifi. There were a number of college students studying there. Good place to go and relax. read more

I just happened to spot this newer place in Pittsburg on a Saturday thrift shopping jaunt. So glad we stopped in! My husband raved over his Shot in the Dark. I see another review mentions the espresso comes from Signet Coffee Roasters, so that makes a lot of sense...we love their coffee from Joplin Ave Coffee Co. in nearby Joplin. Anyway, I went for a lavender latte and it was phenomenal!! Not too sweet, and plenty of lavender flavor without being overwhelming. I would order this again and again. I can't wait for my next visit. Service was quick and friendly. Even though they were having some technical issues the barista (working alone) was very positive and confident about being able to prepare the full coffee menu for us. Impressive! read more

On a 12,000 mile bicycle tour, I cycled through Pittsburg mid-morning on a hot summer day. The Espresso Milkshake was the perfect recovery and chill down break.
