This may be a good place but I'll never know because their scheduling process is ridiculous. If you miss their initial phone call after you fill out the inquiry form, you're basically out of luck. Messages for the new patient scheduler are never returned (I left messages 3X), tried leaving a message at the "front desk" and that was also never returned. It shouldn't be that hard to schedule an appointment! It's sad in this day and age with so much technology to have to rely on phone calls vs some sort of online scheduling; and also the level of customer service that allows complete failure to return phone calls. I've been patient of Dr. Brent Turnipseed for over three years. My main challenge is anxiety which, left unchecked, can make work and sleep more challenging. In my opinion, Dr Turnipseed is a nice and gentle practitioner that is very open to letting his patients take autonomy of their own treatment. He also helped me to control my anxiety using a creative approach that I'd previously not considered. That said, his supporting staff is underwhelming to say the least. If I'm behind on coming in, they routinely take a combative posture with me and have threatened to terminate my treatment if I don't come in more often. I understand that certain medications require routine contact with a practitioner, but for someone who feels like they've got everything dialed in, the last thing on my mind is going in for a checkup. So I expect that Roots kindly and graciously let me know that they need me to come in for a check-up and set aside the hostility in favor of kindness. As someone with anxiety, it's not helpful to add more fear to my life by threatening to take away the medications that help me. If Roots can get a better handle on their collective bedside manner, I'd consider adjusting my rating to a four or five star. As a business, they need to listen to the voice of the customer. read more

I will change my review if things ever change, but they asked for an honest review on Google and Yelp. This is not a hit job, I'm not upset over any recent visit, I have been seeing this provider for several years, and I will probably continue to do so. The thing that they seem to be good with is that if you use their specific system for all communication, they are generally responsive. Their system isn't always working, and if you are someone who accesses websites via your phone instead of a desktop, you might have significant difficulties - this was my problem until I realized that it worked well on my iMac. If you aren't good with technology, I would recommend you go somewhere else. They do not have an app. You can't just call them on the phone if you need help. If you call the front desk, the gatekeeper of all calls, they will relay the message or call you back about a quarter, 25%, of the time. If you request help with meds through the front desk because the website is down (or if you are in a place without an internet connection) or you are using a new pharmacy out-of-town, forget it. You are not going to get your medication even if it is life-threatening for you to miss it. My pharmacy has been nearly perfect with every other doctor I have (and our family's combined twenty-one prescriptions) for over a decade, but they often seem to have trouble with Roots meds. Roots almost always blames it on my pharmacy (HEB). I'm suspicious of that. HEB doesn't blame it on anyone, and they seem to always be trying to be perfect. They don't have trouble with other doctors. If you are someone traveling from out-of-town or a suburb, I would suggest getting to a place nearby a few hours ahead of time. If there is a wreck on I-35 and you are 10 minutes late, you will be charged even if you walk in the door 10 minutes late. If the front desk tells you the policy is 15 minutes, like they did to me, they are lying. It's 10 minutes and you have to be at the desk. That means that if you are on time and it takes the person in front of you 10 minutes to check-in, you will be turned away with no exceptions. No exceptions for anyone at any time. If the person in front of you makes you late, you will not be able to get the medication refill you are there to get renewed. This also has happened to me. The office is right on I-35 at the most congested section in Austin, so you have to take a half-day or full-day off work in case you run into traffic. I once left work in West Austin near noon for an appointment an hour and a half later, and I missed my appointment. That was not a fun bill to pay. Expect the front desk to interact with you as if they are better than you. Expect them to treat you as if you are stupid or insane. They look down on patients and seem to passive-aggressively try to make things worse - this is not just for me but for other people I've seen them deal with in the office. My therapist is nice and professional and seems to communicate well once you get to them, but over the years, I've learned not to trust anyone else. The extra star over "one star" is because of my therapist. Again, I'm not mad about a specific visit. I'm actually not angry at all. I will continue to go to this provider because it's too much of a pain to switch. I'm putting my name and picture with this review, so please don't think I'm attacking you, Roots. Your automatic email service prompted me for a review, so I'm giving an honest review. I would really like things to get better, as I don't plan on going anywhere else. I was looking for a psychiatrist a few years a ago and called this practice. One of there screener questions to see If could see this doctor was if I had ever been been diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder This is a disorder that is given to trauma. It is very stigmatized in the mental health field. It wouldn't be too much to say that it has been used a weapon to destroy people with trauma, mostly women. I have been diagnosed with this issue when I was younger by doctors who can't identify trauma and PTSD and it was used against me. This doctor does that. He stigmatizes and refuses to work in any kind of ethical framework. It makes me sick that he is now offering ketamine therapy for those with trauma and PTDS when he refuses to treat anyone diagnosed with a borderline disorder. He should be driven out of practice. read more

My portal messages to my doctor regarding my medication were left unanswered for weeks, someone in the office didn't submit my paperwork to insurance and it took me calling everyday for a week to get this resolved, and so much more. Wow! Ive been a patient for three years and they have absolutely gone out of their way for me. Numerous times they have been in my corner and I have always received the best care. Everyone at Roots is down to earth and understanding. If you are in need, look no further. If you want the best, look no further. Don't waste your time with others if you're not feeling it. I have been with Roots Behavioral Health for a few years now, and they have just slowly declined, it all started with, I think getting rid of the front desk admin? I am just guessing because they want you to do everything through the portal, which just isn't always feasible. Like at my last session when the provider didn't show up, it was virtual and when I call Roots and choose my location, the line just rings a bit and then hangs up. I told them about this last month, but when I called again today, the line hung up again, so clearly there is something happening there. Also, when you need to cancel a session, you can text yes or no, which is great, but then if you text no, then you still get a reminder text and call about the appointment, then you have to call the front office to make sure it's actually cancelled, but their is no front office staff or something? So you never get a call back. I was OK just communicating through the portal once I saw that they will get back to you through there, until today. I had to get some paperwork signed for my job, and after a week or two of them saying sent it, and then I called my doctors office and they hadn't, then I called Roots back and they said they would send it again, but only sent two pages, so I wasted a bunch of time making all these phone calls, and then at my doctor's office waiting for them to send the rest, but my provider was "out of the office at 3 PM", so they couldn't get the rest of the paperwork done that days even though I called at 2:10 PM. You have to submit your refill requests MONTHLY on their portal, and you have to enter the name, address and phone number of the pharmacy, for EVERY perscription, as if I didn't JUST enter it, and as if it's not the same as it has been for the last 6 months. Full disclosure: I got in trouble for telling them to "get their shit together" in a message about the phone line cutting off, which was innappropriate. So that was my bad. But am I going to get this paperwork that I need for my job, and that I paid for after being their client for like 2 years? Only time will tell. read more

I'm glad I didn't let some of the more unfortunate reviews deter me from Roots. Though I am a newer patient (a few months), I've had nothing but great experiences. The only time I was even a bit nervous was when it was about a month out for an initial consultation and sure enough within days I got a phone call from the waitlist and ended up having 3 sessions in the time it would have taken to wait for my initial. Scarlette was always nice. I booked my first appointment for the end of 08/2020. I did all the paperwork on line. I got a call being told an earlier appointment opened up and if i would like to take the next day appointment. GREAT sure. I kept being told my Clinical History forms were incomplete. I went back and copy and pasted NA in every slot as requested. I got to the question, Have you ever attempted Suicide? If you answer NO, then you can skip the rest of this form. So i scrolled to the bottom of the page AGAIN and I clicked submit. While at work i did get several calls from Scarlett but I cant get to my calls until after work. By that time I get an email saying that my clinical history form is incomplete and now they had to cancel the earlier appointment they offered me. AND they had to still charge me the $100 cancel fee. I am amazed. So much for patient care and mental health. Their portal and forms are flawed and set you up for failure. But i guess in a pandemic people are made of money so charge me the $100 anyway. Truly sad. This was going to be my first time seeking help, something ive avoided for so long. This is how it turned out. Im done with this place. Lol i didnt even get to start. read more

I have been a patient for about 3 1/2 years and just recently got a letter saying that my treatment had been terminated. It was the most impersonal form letter you can imagine. Not only that but I'd needed my meds refilled for several days and they refused to acknowledge it, not my requests or my pharmacy's. My pharmacy faxed them every day for almost a week without any response. Last Friday I called and was then informed at about 3:30p that 'they' had decided to 'terminate our relationship' as patient/therapist. I was told initially that they weren't able to refill my meds effective immediately, but I asked to speak to a supervisor because I was pretty sure that was illegal. I was then informed by the 'supervisor' that they were in fact obligated to refill my existing med prescriptions but that she didn't think a provider would be able to call it in before the end of the day. And they didn't, which put me ins real bind as a pregnant woman who was in need of a medication that is risky if it is missed...withdrawal symptoms include seizures, etc. I had to go through my OBgyn's emergency number to get the refill. The doctor on call heard my story about Roots and was appalled. I was 'fired' as a patient bc of a somewhat recent no-show, but never did anyone follow up with me. I felt like ever since treatment here the providers just kind of 'phone it in' and take only about 15 min max with the visits. Not impressed. I've been thrown out of nicer places. read more

I've been a patient at Roots Behavioral Health for the past two years. I've received nothing but compassionate care. The two providers I've had in my time with this office have shown that they truly care about their patients. I've never felt like I was being judged, as I have experienced multiple times in the past by other behavioral health clinicians. My providers have been open-minded, trusting, and understanding about all of my mental health struggles. This is the first place that I've felt like I was being treated as a human being. (PTSD, Severe Recurrent Major Depression, and Anxiety disorders). They are very open to various treatment options and I've always felt like I was in good hands here. I highly recommend Roots. I have been seeking quality mental health care for over half of my lifetime. I've gone to some of the best Mental Health Care Facilitates in the nation. At 44 years of age, I had all but given up on seeking treatment for my depression, anxiety and ADHD. I had stumbled across Roots Behavioral Health's website quite literally while simultaneously calling a Suicide Prevention Hotline. I've gone to countless psychiatrists and therapists over the years in both San Antonio and Austin searching for the RIGHT course of treatment for MY condition. Over the years I have felt much like a scientific/pharmacological case study. I've been told by some psychiatrists they could not help me. And believe me when I say how disheartening it is to seek treatment for severe depression and being told there is nothing that can be done to help you. Hopeless and extremely depressed, I was fortunate enough to get an appointment with Jennifer Dawson, Dr. Brent Turnipseed's amazing PA, and I literally walked in one my first day begging for electroshock therapy. They administered a cheek swab test and when the results came back, it was obvious why no other courses of treatment had worked for me. Many, if not most of the medications I had previously been prescribed were on the list of medications I should probably never entertain as a course of treatment. I had just left a psychiatrist who was prescribing a class of medications that accounted for 15 ER visits in a single year due to tardive akathisia and tardive dyskinesia ; side effects which could have been permanent but thankfully were not. Not only was Dr. Turnipseed willing to think outside the box and offer me a treatment plan a bit unique in general, it was/is a treatment plan unique to MY condition(s). Andrea Turnipseed, Dr. Turnipseed's wife serves as my wonderful counselor at Roots Behavioral Health. I have had positive results from their trailblazing courses of treatment with Ketamine Infusions. This is a very beneficial and cutting-edge treatment. I received it in another doctor's office prior to my treatments at Roots and they left me there, getting pumped full of ketamine for 6 hours or more, unattended and unsupervised. Dr Turnipseed's methods are extremely safe, very well organized and EXTREMELY WELL Supervised! Not only was Andrea there with me the entire time taking copious notes on my reactions, there was also an attending certified caregiver on -hand). All those administering the ketamine are absolutely qualified, and Dr. T even travelled out to California with his staff to a conference where the staff themselves received ketamine treatment so they could experience it themselves. If anyone found the ketamine treatment protocol unorganized, clearly they should refrain from writing reviews about it before the effects have worn off. Also you must have the right mindset going in to the treatment and understand Dr T and his staff have gone to great lengths to provide safe, effective administration of the ketamine treatments. He is willing to go out on a limb to provide what can potentially be a very effective treatment for various mental health conditions. Andrea Turnipseed could not be more thorough and compassionate. I will rate them five stars in every aspect of their practice. From their comprehensive, out-of-the-box approach to courses of treatment, to their on-the-ball staff working at the front desk, to their accessibility to communicate with both your psychiatrist and therapist via your patient portal; Roots Behavioral Health exceeds 5-Stars. This is coming from someone who has lost over half a lifetime trying to function under conditions which were in and of themselves disabling, not to mention the horrible side effects from treatment plans administered prior to my first visit to Roots Behavioral Health. I lost faith in Mental Health Care pretty much all together and it's quite simply because no other psychiatrist had ever taken the time to get to the "roots" of my conditions. Living with depression, anxiety etc in and of itself has the power to rob anyone suffering from any number of mental health conditions the opportunity to not only survive, but actually LIVE your life. I guess when you plant "roots," you actually bloom. I am not ashamed to discuss my battles with mental illness, and the entire program at Roots gave me the tools to fight those battles. We don't win the war on mental illness, we learn to manage them. I have Roots Behavioral Health to thank for giving me, quite simply, my life. Period. Still a work in progress but far from hopeless, I (obviously ) can't say enough positive things about them as a Mental Health Care Provider bc they actually PROVIDE proper and effective Mental Health CARE. I went to Roots for ketamine therapy. By my second session, it was abundantly clear that Roots is absolutely, unequivocally NOT a safe or healthy place to get treatment, especially that sort of treatment. Even the therapist I was working with, who I had only just recently met, felt the need to tell me in nearly all of my regular therapy sessions how "disorganized" Roots is, how "loosey-goosey" they are with the ketamine treatment protocol, how "Brent Turnipseed is not a details person" and how "unfortunately, his wife does little to compensate for his shortcomings" and on and on. The therapists who are doing ketamine therapy at Roots have very, very, VERY little experience with it and sit there on their computer typing away during your 'journey' and interfering in other ways which are not helpful or conducive to healing. The staff is rude and impatient (even simply requesting to use the bathroom real quick before I got my first ketamine injection elicited an exasperated sigh and eyeroll from the PA, thanks Kristen!); the space is claustrophobic and very clinical; the music is bad techno (so bad!!!); there are a lot of banging around noises through the walls from other rooms; and I'm sure everyone can hear everything you do and say during your sessions, too. Instead of actually trying to make the setting safer and more comfortable, they'll offer you sedatives in an effort to drug you enough that you won't notice how bad it is anymore. When you refuse their sedatives, you'll be tagged as 'non-compliant' and reminded you signed a waiver consenting to treatment (paternalistic much??), even though you made it very clear from the outset that you refuse to take any benzodiazipines because they are contraindicated for ptsd. They'll even argue with you about how 'safe' benzos are for people with ptsd even though there has been overwhelming, peer-reviewed psychiatric research for years now about how benzos can cause serious harm to people with ptsd. Major red flag!!! The whole situation there is waaaaaay off the mark for doing this sort of work in a safe and healing way. My suggestion, find a legitimate shaman or medicine wo/man who has some real experience with plant and animal medicines and work with them to heal yourself. There are a lot of powerful medicines out there, including ketamine, but it is absolutely essential that these things are done in a tight, safe container with an experienced guide or you can do real damage to yourself. Avoid places like Roots who are trying to make a quick buck by offering this novel treatment in a totally unsafe and unhealthy setting with woefully untrained and inexperienced practitioners. It is only a matter of time before they do real damage to someone, if they haven't already. read more

I very carefully went over my insurance-covered expenses before seeking treatment with Roots, did two appointments at $25 each (my copay) and was just told that because they didn't adequately check my insurance, I retroactively owe them $373.75. For two sessions whose cost they inaccurately informed me of. It's ironbound and they said it'll go to collections if I don't pay it. They don't check your insurance properly before billing you and you can get hit with surprise costs after treatment, to the tune of hundreds of dollars. They put me on hold thee times - which lasted over 15 minutes, I even went online to get someone to contact me and they never did until today. I'm thankful Blue Cross Blue Shield told me to contact Greater Austin Psychiatry instead. I have been with Roots for a couple of years. I don't know how things got so bad so quickly. I have had the same meds prescribed with minor changes in doses over these years. Now, it is impossible to get these meds called in correctly to the pharmacy. (Please note that I have been with the same pharmacy and pharmacist for over 5 years.) When I leave the office of Roots I am assured that all will be as it should be. Inevitably, I spend at least 2 hours chasing down the PA to get the usual meds called into the pharmacy correctly or even at all. The PA sits in front of her computer the entire time that she is talking with me. Looks up to tell me "great, I've sent the refills in" and then I wait and wait. I call my pharmacist, nope, nothing has come in. I call Roots ok they'll take care of it. I call my pharmacist. Nope, nothing has come in. Oh wait here's something, but it's the wrong dosage. Back on the phone to Roots, I am out on hold for no less than 20 minutes each time. Finally, the psychiatrist!! calls to tell me he's sorry my pharmacy is having trouble. Nope, not my pharmacy, my PA. Well, by now you're thinking this is a one time occurrence. Nope, it's another month and I am on the exact same tread wheel. Roots used to run like clockwork. Now, I can measure the anxiety added and time I am wasting from my life according to the visits to my PA at Roots. I see, after reading the experiences if others here on Yelp that I am really not alone. It's time for Roots to face the facts. There has been a shift in the care it offers it's clients. Not a good shift. Have a meeting. Be honest about our complaints. Make changes. Be better. Your current methods are failing you. More important, they are failing your clients. Roots Behavioral Health is a beautiful clinic - clean, nice staff, and overall peaceful. I have been a patient of Dr. Brent Turnipseed and Andrea Turnipseed now for going on 5 years. I couldn't be happier. Andrea is an amazing therapist, putting my needs first always and really listening before analyzing my situations. She has been someone I can count on at all times the past 5 years through some really rough times. She and Brent are a team, and so having her to relay things to Brent really cuts down on the time I need to spend with Brent during our sessions (don't have to hash through things twice). Of course, this is a disclaimer she asks me for before talking with him about anything. Brent is a life savior as well. He put me a medication ritual that works. Really works. I'd had psychotic meds just thrown at me and had been really messed up. Brent analyzed my situation and researched what combination was best for me. You can trust his judgement, as he is definitely qualified. Two thumbs up for both the Turnipseeds. I'll be sticking with them for the long haul. read more

Roots Behavorial Health saves my life. I went in begging for electroshock therapy so it's safe to say I was at my wits end. Not only did they evaluate me and eliminate the need for etc, they administered tests that let me know what medications would work the best for my genetic makeup. That explained why I thought I was losing my mind. For over 20 years other psychiatrists had been prescribing me medication that was actually making me worse. They were able to not only correct the debilitating effects of the wrong medications, they gave me my life back. Living with clinical depression is hard enough, but fighting against the medications meant to "help" you makes it almost impossible. I would recommend Roots Behavioral Health to anyone and everyone suffering from any type of mental health issue to go to Roots. Dr. Turnipseed has been my psychiatrist for almost 6 years. I have also seen his PA Jennifer Dawson. I have a chronic mental illness that I struggle with daily. I am "normal" and hold down a job but my depression is often the main event in my life. I have seen many psychiatrists and have tried almost every medication that exists. Dr. Turnipseed has never given up on me and has continued to come up with new ways to tackle my depression to help me feel better. He is creative in pulling in more natural or alternative methods when the traditional psychiatric solutions fail. I am currently doing Ketamine injections at Roots and this treatment has been extraordinary for me in terms of lifting my mood and helping me function.
