I brought my own boots on a quick ski vacation to Killington and Sugar Bush and this shop had the best prices for a decent set of rental skis and poles. The guy that helped me (I wish I'd caught his name) was very helpful guiding this Californian to the right pair of skis for the conditions. I rented the sportier skis and at his suggestion went narrower and shorter than I would have chosen on my own, which worked out very well. Easy fitting and returns and very reasonable prices. UPDATE as of 01/22/23: the same "Manager" was there to cash my bf out after he returned his equipment and he brought up this review and mentioned it was "comical" to him, which is completely unprofessional on his end-though we already knew this. I was not present at the time, but he mentioned me leaving a "harsh" review. Sir, this is not a harsh review, this is an accurate depiction of the situation that you failed to handle as someone running a business. I understand money is the root of business, but customer service is the main priority if you want longevity and customer loyalty. 0/5 is more accurate for this review. Unfortunately, when we arrived it turns out the dates we selected were off by a day. Granted that is on us, because my bf was confused about the early pick up and set it up a day in advance on accident. The problem begins right after we booked, we were immediately charged as we got the notification on our card, but we never received an email or got redirected to the confirmation page. We thought this was unusual, but considering we had been charged we didn't think too deeply. We did try calling and no answer, so again, we let it go as we'd be arriving a few days later. Important to note, my bf checked his junk mail frequently and still nothing was received with confirmation. So we finally arrive and the front desk person was struggling to even find our reservation. She finds it eventually and lets us know the reservation started yesterday, I tell her the situation I just explained and she calls over a "manager" who we again explained the situation to. We asked if they could just switch our dates considering the mishap on their end about no email confirmation and their website just redirecting us to the booking page after we had booked versus to the confirmation page. They just smirked and said they couldn't or more so wouldn't do anything. They kept insisting we could always extend(well duh, on our dime and not even a discount considering their website error). I understand these shops make their money during the season, but considering all the options available, we will NOT ever rent from them again. Such a shame considering we like to be loyal to businesses with good practice, but I suppose this isn't a good practice establishment after all. I would not recommend them, but am happy to take my business elsewhere! read more

Don't rent at the slopes- rent here! Their customer service was superb. We rented an upgraded board, boots, and helmet for about $40 per day. An entry level board, boots, and helmet would have been about $30 per day. We originally rented and paid for our gear for three days. When we returned it one day early they refunded us for the third day. They close at 6pm, so we had plenty of time after we left the slopes for Apres-Ski before we had to return the gear. We also never waited more than 2 minutes for any service representative, even during peak hours during peak season. Everyone here was helpful and friendly. I highly recommend Root's. read more

Don't waste your time renting here! The skis are absolute garbage. If you like skiing down a mountain on plastic sticks, then this is your shop! Personally, I prefer quality skis for a day on the slopes. The staff was more concerned about rushing us out of their shop than answering our questions to make sure we got the right skis. When asked about some differences in types of skis and pricing the response was "all of that is on the board." When we returned the skis and told them our experience was not great with them, they didn't apologize or ask any questions as to why our day of skiing was pretty terrible. They know they are renting garbage products and don't care. I hate to leave a negative review on a local business, but I know I would have wanted to know this information before I rented their skis. read more

What a rental shop should be. Friendly, patient, knowledgeable and equipment that is always tuned and ready to go. Pick up in the afternoon the day before for first tracks the next day, and drop off after the slopes close. Ken and his son are top notch. Also did a great job on a tune and wax on my snowboard. Walked in shortly after the shop opened on a Friday, and was met by friendly, helpful staff. I only needed to rent a board and a helmet, and was set up within ten minutes. DO NOT RENT HERE, they rented me a really old flimsy board even though I'm a beginner and could have been seriously injured. The metal edge chipped off even though I'm not skilled enough to do anything crazy like ramps or metal obstacles. I didn't take any nasty falls or wipe out at anytime, but even if I did I was told by other snowboarders that for me to have possibly broken a board to that degree I would have at the least had an very serious concussion. I didn't even notice the damage until I returned the board and the young man HAPPILY informed me that I would have to PURCHASE THE ENTIRE BOARD. I wasn't offered insurance on anything I rented so I was FORCED TO PAY. Not only is this unethical but extremely irresponsible because people could get hurt if the quality of your gear is this bad. read more

Rented a pair of skis here at a more reasonable rate than getting them at any of the nearby ski slopes would've been. It was $60 for three days and the staff was both professional and extremely friendly without being condescending to my "well, I haven't skied in ten years so I don't really know where my ability lies" experience. The skis, meanwhile, were of very decent quality. It wasn't a madhouse either, which is key when you're dealing with VT ski slopes and their propensity to be host to every family of screaming kids that the Northeast could possibly puke up. read more

This is by far the most friendly and helpful rental shop I've been to. Also the most affordable in the area that I could find conveniently located to Killington ski area. Easy rental process online and picking up/dropping off was seamless. We had 4 snowboard rentals and all were new gear, which made a noticeable difference on the slopes. There were other people in there renting as well but I was in and out within 10 minutes. I paid $25 for my rentals for 1 day- just had to return before close (6pm) that evening. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! Go somewhere else is possible - so many other locations to get it from!! A couple of my friends and I were going to Vermont for the first time and some of us didn't have equipment so to be safe we wanted to reserve them. The person on the phone reassured us that they NEVER run out of rentals so we'll be okay regardless. We made boots/bindings/snowboard/helmet rentals anyway to be safe. The day before the trip one of us actually bought a snowboard, boots and binding and another got a helmet. The owners seem to be an old man (which was incredibly sweet but seems to be disparaged there) and his son or associate who was so rude and arrogant. When we got to the shop someone else was there arguing with him and we noticed he was a complete ass and rest assured we were treated the same way.. While the old man started to help us as he was busy yelling at the customers that he can't help them with their broken rentals given to them and to figure it out- he eventually came over to us and ripped the clipboard out of this guys hand and said let me do it and muttered idiot under his breath (but the store was quiet enough so everyone heard) Instead of a refund of my reservation I wanted to use the money from the rentals I no longer needed to buy stuff (face masks, etc.) from the store, he wasn't having it and wouldn't work with us at all. I've been here on 2 different weekends (1 holiday, 1 nor'easter), and despite the rush I thought I'd have to beat, both times service was super fast & efficient. They do not take online reservations here, but I now agree, it is 0% a concern. Even on busy weekends they seem to have plenty inventory & fast service - I'm convinced. Much cheaper than the mountain's rentals, and even better quality (my board both times had no scratches on the bottom). $25 for snowboard + boots + bindings $10 for helmet We raved so much about this place, our friends were convinced & decided to rent here as well, despite their corporate discount on the mountain's rentals, and they agree it was a great rental. read more

This is the best rental shop in Vermont - I'm serious! They have great equipment, the prices are reasonable, and they are really nice! They genuinely care about their customers. I couldn't return my skis due to the NEMO Blizzard and they didn't charge me the extra day. They also were cool about the scratches on them from running into a parking lot. read more

I rented skis from Roots for the weekend and the experience was initially good until someone took my skis from the mountain (exact same color/style). When I went back to tell them the situation, which is obviously a pretty bad one to find yourself in, Al, the guy who helped me, told me verbatim he "doesn't take his skis off or puts them in his car" and I shouldn't have left them, as if I had any control over someone taking my skis. He even said he "didn't go to the bathroom", seriously? I understand that I'm ultimately liable but I was stunned by how rude and unsympathetic he was. Customer service apparently isn't all that important to Roots, I would suggest renting elsewhere. read more

I've been renting from Root's Ski for over a year and I've always been happy with them. Their prices for daily rentals are probably the best in the area, especially for being located right on the mountain. Sometimes on really busy days they run out of skis so you might have to rent the more expensive ones. Overall, they're really friendly and helpful. read more

Rented boots here (I already had my own skis) and they adjusted my skis to fit them and said I was all set. When I got to the mountain and tried to get my boots into the skis, it became pretty obvious that the adjustments were at least six inches off. Considering they used my rental boots to make the adjustments, I don't know how this was possible. I lost at least an hour and a half of ski time finding trying to get this fixed. Finally, one of the ski shops on the mountain negotiated with Root's to get me a refund for the $30 fee Killington would charge for a new adjustment. When I finally got back to Root's that night, I was only refunded the cost of the boots ($23). I do have to say though, the service was nice overall. Nonetheless, I don't understand how such a basic (and fairly obvious) mistake was made. read more

Great and quick service. We were a party of 2 adults and 6 kids and they took care of us quickly and professionally! Were patient with the kids as they tried the boots and asked for new sizes. We had to go back second day for a change for one of the kids and they just did it with no questions asked. Of course who can beat the price!
