I wish they have full hook ups though, that makes life easier and convenient. The lake is small but very ideal for fishing. Lots of birds, during sunset they make loud sounds. But it die down as it gets later in the afternoon. Our site is facing the lake so it was a nice view. The shower is a few feet away from. And it's clean, well maintained. The fact that they have ramada in every site is wonderful. If you have company with tent, they have enough area for them too!

I've really come to appreciate the Arizona state park system. This location did not disappoint as it is perfect for a rustic and quiet retreat. Smaller than some of the other state parks that I visited, it has all the amenities needed for a nice day. The campground is well maintained as are the shower facilities. There is a fully stocked lake in the park and we saw some prize Trout that had been caught by one of our campground neighbors. The lake is small and does not allowed motorized boats however, kayaks and canoes are permitted. Animals are allowed in the park as long as they are on leashes, and the park even includes a pet Park. There are a number of trails in the area that are a beginner to intermediate that will take you up to the Mesa for some very nice views. Campsites include fire rings, picnic tables, and depending on which campground you're at include small shelters for sun protection. There are a number of sites with power and water and those without. This location tends to be booked up most of the time, so plan advance with your reservations. Prices are nominal and there is a nice gift shop at the entrance that you should check out when you stop in at this location. The nearby town offers, grocery shopping, hardware, stores, and a variety of different restaurants on the salsa trail that you should check out. This is an exceptionally quiet location and perfect for the stargazer on clear night. Staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful with our questions.

What a great camping find. A pristine State Park in the middle of nowhere, 6 miles from the small town of Safford, AZ. On our cross country trip, we booked this campsite for one night. If we would have known how beautiful, peaceful and quiet this place was, we would probably have booked the maximum of 10 nights. It's been so long since I've seen so many stars!! The darkness of the night was a perfect backdrop for the scintillating jewels lighting the night sky. And quiet ... omg ... I can't remember when I've been so immersed in the velvety sounds of silence. I was in a trance, a dream that I did not wish to end. The sparks from our campfire flew upwards and finished like a mini pyrotechnic display. I love this place soooooo much. I'll certainly be back. You should give it a try. The mesmerizing aura of this place will capture your soul.

A beautiful park for a weekend trip. A few miles of trails and the cabin rate of $60 a night includes entrance to Dankworth park. The shower water is warm. The cabins are clean but the mattress pads are old and flat. A blowup bed is suggested as our foam pads were not sufficient. I strongly recommend spending a few nights at Roper Lake State Park.

We love camping here for many reasons: -Roomy and clean camp sites -Clean bathrooms -Lovely lake for swimming and kayaking -Great hiking -Friendly rangers and nice visitor center (great t-shirts) -Nearby spas and mineral springs -Close to Safford if you need supplies -Not far from Tucson We will be returning soon!

If you're looking for a nice spot to camp for the weekend, look no further. This is your spot. No tent, no RV, no problem, they have cabins also. If the water isn't your thing, bring your boots because they do have hiking trails. You can even see all the lake from the top of one hill. Lots of tables for day use visiting, a beach to just sit on and watch the water. This lake has just what you need for a healthy refresh.

This park is pretty nice. We've tried a few times to rent a pet friendly cabin at this park, but with little success. Pet friendly cabins are the most popular so end up being rented out first. It being Valentine's Day recently we had wanted to do something unique and special. We saw that the trails were being advertised like crazy so we decided to at least enjoy that part of it. There was a $10 fee for use of the park for the day. We ended up being slightly disappointed as there was only one simple, very simple trail with step's. It didn't give you true nature vibes or desert beauty. There was also another group hiking at the same time and we both felt rushed by each other. We also tried the dog park (there were no other dog's) and sat in front of the lake for a little bit. Over all, it was nice. I just wish there was a lot more to do and a lot more trails.

This lake is BEAUTIFUL. Our camping site ended up being secluded from everyone else and it worked out so well. We fished early and late then kayaked around with the dogs to see the entire lake. Many people in boats fishing and kids messing around in the swimming area that is buoyed off. The first night the bugs were extreme because of the rain but we ended up keeping all flashlights off and the bugs ended up leaving us alone. I would highly recommend this lake for a nice weekend to relax or really whenever you have the time.

Nothing like a fine getaway. And what luck! Roper has adorable cabins. This was our first trip cabin camping. The temperatures were a bit too cold for me to pitch a tent. I am not fond of tent camping when the nighttime temperatures dip below 45 degrees. So cabin camping it was! For someone who never cabin camps, this felt so luxurious! I was in the Hummingbird cabin, and secretly wished I had booked Bass. It is a beautiful area, just feet away from the lake. It was wonderful sitting on the patio and watching the ducks come swimming by. And an absolutely GORGEOUS thing happens at dusk. Hundreds of black-colored birds come and sit in the trees and, by the dozens, swoop into the tall grass growing in the water to nest for the night. It was truly an amazing sight, just feet from where I was enjoying my dinner. It's something I look forward to experiencing again. All of the cabins are located in the Gila loop. There are just a few tent camping sites, and there is also group camping offered in Gila. There, you will find a large ramada as well. Looked like a ton of fun for a family reunion or a gathering among friends. Cottonwood seemed very, very popular with people with dogs and children. Not sure why. It does have a bit more vegetation than Gila, so that's important. Also, it is an electric hookup section, but tent campers appear to use it quite often. Also, there is a doggy run nearby! It's right across from the jacuzzi-style tub fed by hot springs. Dogs are not allowed near the water, but the park was thoughtful enough to put a post nearby, so you can tie your dog down and still watch her/him while you get your soak on. FYI: The tub gets busy fast, and it is tiny. Can comfortably sit about eight adults at a time, and it shuts down at 10 p.m. The Hacienda campsite has electric hook ups as well, and also is popular with tent campers. This seems to have the most vegetation, if you are looking for shade. It is quite popular here for people to have their dogs. Lots and lots of dogs -- and all very well mannered. The kids, though, were running around like absolute crazy! FYI: There are no showers available in the Gila Loops, but there are showers in Cottonwood and Hacienda. There is even a short and easy hiking trail here. Seriously, I was able to walk the early part of it in flip flops with no struggle. There are a flight of stairs into the side of the hill that takes you higher for some decent views of the mountain and the valley. Perfect for a sunset or morning walk. And of course there is fishing. I saw lots of people fishing here. Seems like the thing to do. Apparently you can catch bass, catfish, rainbow trout and bluegill. There is also a nice day visit area with picnic tables and grills. There are ramadas there, too. I heard about, but didn't get a chance to visit, Dankworth Pond, which is just a few miles back down the road. Apparently there is more fishing there too. Only one frustration, and perhaps this is normal, but cabin checkout is at 10 a.m. That's so freakin' early, especially when you want to sleep in and hang out before you leave. Check in is at 3, which means you have far less time than if you opted to tent camp (check in is at 2 p.m. and check out is at noon for tents).

Lovely park for fishing, birdwatching or just relaxing. Free hot tub. Just one trail (.75 mile long if that) The cabins are very good, two bedroom and some are pet friendly. One complaint. The Gila loop where the cabins are has no Camp Host. The rangers patrol the area, but from the inside of closed window trucks. As a result we spent a long weekend listening to the neighbors very loud music.. loud as: impossible to take a nap loud. From noon to 10pm. I tried calling the park but got no response. :(

Just spent three days in a rented cabin here. We had a good time, but there were some issues. 1) There is a 10:00 PM - 6:00 AM quite time, A few campers decided they didn't care and had there stereo loud until midnight! Don't understand when they are near their stereo why it must be played loud enough so the whole campsite could hear? Maybe they have a hard time of hearing? I did complain the next day, asked if anyone enforces the quite time rule. They said a park ranger runs through until midnight? But did not talked to them, they talked to my neighbors who I thought was fine?? go figure! 2) We did find a scorpion in our cabin, wasn't to worried. I killed it for the wife and checked the rest of the cabin. Told the rangers they might want to spray the cabin for future tenants. 3) Restrooms and showers. the restrooms directly in the cabin areas are only shined up portal potties! They dressed it up a bit, but still a portal potty. There are permanent restrooms and showers in the RV camp site just down the trail. Plans are they will be building showers and restroom in the cabin area. 4) We stayed at the coyote cabin, which it faces the lake. I was great, but they need to cut down a few of the grass area in the lake. Hard to fish, but I was just trying to be lazy and fish off of our front porch! Now with that said, there are three cabins facing the lake! Great view, a lot of nature surroundings. Cabins had four beds, 1-bunk bed, 1-twin, and 1-full. Patio had a swinging chair, BBQ, Sink, fire pit, and a picnic table. Great place to bring your kids. Plenty of hiking trails nearby, a natural hot spring tub. No motor boats allowed on the lake. We had a great time, just a few things need to get better. But that will not stop us from coming back.

I have never heard of roper lake before, but during this social distancing time I had to get out of Phoenix and be in the nature. I researched this place for hours to make sure I would be happy here since I wanted to be gone for about a week. This place has succeeded my expectations. I was very impressed. We stayed at hummingbird cabin and the location of it was perfect, right on the water! Also when we got here we wiped everything down just to make sure it was clean and there was absolutely no dirt or anything that came off so that shows me they are cleaning these cabins often. We saw a cleaning crew after each person checked out of the cabin. There was no bugs in the cabin, smelt great. AC worked amazing. Nice and cool. The bathrooms were a short walk and ALSO very, very clean. During this time of COVID-19 you cannot swim, go in the hot tub or be in shared picnic table areas. (You have your own table at your cabin, so it's not a problem.) we found out when we got there that you can actually float on the water so that was a plus you just can't swim. (We went back into town, which is only 10 mins away to Walmart and picked up a paddle boat!) overall amazing time! Here are some pictures. I struggled before I came to find some good ones so here you go, hope it helps! DEFINITELY COME HERE!

This is a very nice and clean state park. We have camped at many here in arizona and this is certainly on par with the others. There is a natural stone tub which is fed by natural hot spring mineral water. There is also a nice lake and numerous camping sites with electric and water hookups. This is the first time we have ever come down here but I was pleasantly surprised with the tranquility of the location. The lake on one side and the mountain on the other gives you two good reasons to get out of bed. I spent about 30 minutes in the hot tub yesterday and I felt great after I was done. Smelled of sulfur but I didn't care I'm from the country. Great hiking trails and hidden walkways throughout the state park. It is a far drive for us to come this way since we can get to dead horse ranch state park in a fraction of the time for the same temps. This is a cool place and is certainly worth the stop. Good work state of arizona on caring for our parks. Grea

I'd say it's one of the can't miss locations among the many in this state. Although I had seen some photos and videos, they didn't prepare me for the overwhelming experience. It's a canyoned, slot canyoned, nature trailed, tree-lined, water featured, and wildlife wonder courtesy of a built-for-the-ages metal catwalk that floats through much of it as you are suspended between ground and sky. I've seen so many places of natural beauty that I don't get as impressed or as thrilled as I did when I was younger. However, here, I can't think of enough superlatives to say how amazed I was. This place can easily fill with people on nice weekend days. I chose a cold weekday morning and I had the place to myself for a few hours. I considered that time an honor as I walked the catwalk gazing up to the cliff faces and sky while listening to the subdued roar of the water passing by below. I took time to descend from the catwalk and sit at a few places at the water's edge. I hike and camp and bicycle and, while they offer exercise and joy, the Catwalk Recreation Area seems to have its own built-in stress relief feature. This is such an embracing and calming place that can lift you up and say don't lose sight of all the good things in the world.

The Catwalk is so beautiful…read more The boardwalk itself is higher above the water than I anticipated and much shorter in distance than I expected. Regardless the feeling entering the canyon after the catwalk is almost surreal the rocks seem as if they just fell minutes before arriving. Almost like stepping in the Flintstones cartoon. I suggest going here, bring lots of water and snacks and wear a hat plus sunscreen the sun is very direct and hot. Not much shade until you get up the river a ways. I would say I think smaller dogs paws would not be comfortable on the catwalks metal grating but large dogs seemed very comfortable walking on it.

the tradesmen in town don't show up or communicate and if they do there's a 50/50 chance their gonna charge you top dollar for services rendered or try to hustle you for top dollar while giving bad service or leaving a mess or damaging things while they do it, the cherry on top their probably gonna be rude while they do it. 2) if it not getting ripped off or treated badly then your getting poor accommodations, there's a lot of places in town that for the most par that don't fix or keeps things in repair, quite a few of the rental apartments or housing options are run down, always look through the google reviews of a place and compare notes to make sure the same things your noticing aren't popping up when your vetting business owners or landlords. 3)this town is boring and there's nothing to do unless you like to get drunk, go to church or do outdoor activities, mind you there are other more hidden things you can find to do but you wont learn about them unless you do so searching and learn about them via word of mouth but even then your gonna run into problems with the people your gonna deal with while doing those things. 4) a lot of the people here are weird, only way I could describe it. you got a lot of poverty, a lot of people never lived or went anywhere else so their uncultured and this is all they know and they have "small town mentality" aka this is the way we've always done things, you also get a sense that a lot of the people you meet peaked in high school because they act like high schoolers, if its not that, a huge portion of the people who have a lot of pull in the town are Mormons and the rest of the people are kinda white trash to be honest there's very few working professionals that don't fit the white trash or mormon check box, last but not least you have a lot of drug use, and metal health issue and people that got raised in dysfunctional families here and they all openly talk about it, add all this on top of each other and cliquish/ peaked in high school attitudes and your gonna be dealing with a lot of undesirable people here that aren't chill people to be around, a lot of them suffer from mental health issues, personality disorders, insecurity and ego issues which are gonna rub you the wrong way . 5)gossips galore, a lot of people here talk to much and are overly invested in the people around them, coming from a big city environment you notice people like this and start to avoid actively dealing with the people you notice who gossip about others so much and actively avoid them, the problem is a huge portion of people in town are gossips, the funny part is a lot of these people who participate in this behavior if you watch them and size them up their lives usually suck more then the people their gossiping about which is ironic because if they spent their free time working on themselves and fixing themselves instead of gossiping about others then their lives would improve. 6) lower standards across the board examples-a lot of fat unhealthy people-poor customer service-poor quality food at places to eat at-poor work ethic people that want to charge you top dollar-a lot of people can't drive here-poor quality roads-75 percent of the business aren't worth doing business with-lack of quality people to spend time with-not a lot of decent jobs unless you count the mine or law enforcement-poor work ethic characters people even though its a highly christian town. if you move here and are not from here some advice I would give is this. first off "don't if you can help it" but if you decided to do so anyways, be prepared to get ripped off, the mine drove the cost of rent up to 700 dollars a month for a room to rent due to the mine paying 700 dollars a month to their workers to pay for a place so everybody in town is price gouging for rentals here due to that. if you buy a house hire a decent out of are inspector, a lot of the people here don't take care of there properties and you might get ripped off due to the local inspects not doing their job properly, you could end up with a lemon of a house that needs a lot of repairs. if your looking for women try to go as young as you can, a lot of the women in town are single moms, and have been passed around hard....thats why I say your better off pulling women who are younger, also a lot of the women here got raised in a bad environment so your gonna have to vet them for personality disorders, mental health issues or various other things like drug use or being raised in piss poor family environments. next is the people, take your time and slowly vet the people you deal with in this town, a lot of them are low class peeps

Lordsburg-Hidalgo County Museum, and 3. Fraggle Rock (open 24/7). Notable regions to visit: 1. Silver City (town) about one hour north and 2. Tombstone, Arizona about two hours west. 3. Whitmire Canyon desert/Animas Mountain Range (very dangerous) about 90 minutes south. 4. Las Cruces/White Sands Missile Base about two hours east. White Sands is where the Atomic Bomb Testing (Manhattan Project) occurred. Travel Safely my friends. @cigarcpa

Also camped at Bonita Campground. When I visited, they have a shuttle on Saturdays and Sundays (~9am departure) to so you can do a point to point (one way) decline hike back to your car. And while this place is a national monument, one thing our government could do instead of all the other nonsense going on is to upgrade this place to a national park. We stopped in here after spending time at Kartchner Caverns and today the scenic drive beyond the campground was closed because of the rain and snow that came down steadily last night. And because of this and due to the amount of time we had, we did a shorter walk along the Silver Spur Meadow. This trail is very easy, well shaded and what a beautiful place to view birds! I think may have seen 15 or more species in just the short walk we did here today. I was also here about 2 years ago and did the Echo Canyon Trail to the Grotto and that was such a lovely easy hike with all sorts of cool rock formations and I enjoyed climbing around. Id like to come back and do a more strenuous hike and when I get a chance, will come back and do the Heart of the Rocks trail! Visitor center is very cool with a really nice gift shop, museum, bathrooms and very informative rangers. Parking lot can be a bit tight but more parking available down the road. I was able to get a fun stuffed sandhill crane! I could spend a lot more time here and just love this place! Great place to get a dose of nature and love how the air feels at close to 5500 feet!

The trail starts at the recreation center where either you can walk to the trailhead or take a shuttle for a fee. There is another smaller parking area off of Bear Canyon Road that you can access the trailhead from that isn't in the recreation area. Once parked, you follow an easy rocky wash to the recreation area. Accessing the trail from this parking lot makes the hike a little shorter. But finding a spot to park can be difficult because the lot only holds about 15 cars. Attractions you can visit in Bear Canyon are Seven Falls and Thimble Peak. The rest of this review is for the Seven Falls Trail portion of the Bear Canyon Loop Trail. This hike reminded me of the West Fork Trail in Northern AZ but with less shade. There is a restroom at the Bear Canyon overlook picnic area. The Seven Falls trail is 8 miles out-and-back and has seven water crossings along the way. I was able to walk across the rocks, but plan on getting your feet wet (or bring water shoes). There are lots of Saguaro and Prickly Pear Cactus along this rocky path. After the crossings, there is an incline and then downhill portion until you get to the base of the falls. The waterfall cascades down a rock face and is gorgeous. This hike is really popular and gets crowded during the middle of the day and weekends. I really enjoyed hiking it. The best way to enjoy this hike and avoid lots of people is to start early. And as always when you hike in Arizona, bring water and sunscreen.

For Seven Falls you can start off right from the parking and work your way up to the fails or you can get tickets and a ride the tram up for 4 miles, if you take the tram, you are still hiking 8 miles so don't feel like you're not getting your distance in if that's your thing. I recommend doing the Seven Falls hike either in the early spring if the creeks aren't flowing to high or the fall, most of the hike is not shaded, but you do like 7 creek crossings and do get wet , so plan on wearing waterproof shoes. This was an Arizona bucket list hike for me so I really enjoyed it. The Seven Falls are worth it! Come early to get a parking spot . Distance (with tram ride) 8.2 Miles, but I am sure the .2 depends on where you park, elevation gain about 900ft, difficulty moderate, you don't have to scale rocks or scramble, you can easily climb. Amenities are at the center, and it's real flushing toilets. No, you can't bring your dog on this.

Very high on my list of places i can't wait to visit again...This 49,000 acre preserve, managed by…read morethe Nature Conservancy, offers overnight accommodations in a remote, peaceful setting. Be forewarned this is NOT a full service hotel and there is a very long list of rules/guidelines for staying here which are strictly enforced. Reservations are required WAY in advance if you hope to get a casita here, and the ranch is closed to visitors during the hot summer months due to rattlesnake activity. But (if you are still reading...) if you are pretty self sufficient, willing to pack in all of the food and drink for your stay (the nearest safeway will be an hour away down a dark, pothole filled dirt road) and in search of a rare respite completely immersed in the natural beauty of southern Arizona, then this place is well worth the journey. Muleshoe Ranch is located at the southern end of a 50 mile riparian nature preserve, at the convergence of three rivers in the Galiuro mountains. You can climb mountains, explore the terrain, hike through shady riverbeds or do all of the above in a single day. Your self guided adventures can range from an easy nature trail to a half day loop (Beth Woodin Trail, which is spectacular) or a 4 wheel drive expedition into the backcountry. The landscape changes with the seasons and at night there's some of the best stargazing you'll find anywhere. Wildlife abounds, and includes many species of hummingbirds as well as elusive troops of ring tailed coatimundi. Wildflowers are abundant in the springtime and the streambeds teem with life. The casitas (actually 4 casitas round a grassy courtyard) and a little stone house down the hill are available for overnight rental. Very comfortable accommodations with beds and fully equipped kitchens. Some of the casitas have a living/dining room area with futon sofas that convert into additional sleeping accommodations. There are plenty of little outdoor seating areas to rest and relax. There is an outdoor deck for stargazing and wildlife viewing, as well as a common room for socializing with other guests. Nearby there is a visitor center and a small gift shop which are open to day visitors during limited hours. The icing on the cake are the two outdoor natural spring fed hot (very hot!) tubs crafted from round galvanized cattle troughs, which are only available to overnight guests. Before or after a strenuous day of hiking they are heavenly! Be sure to visit the Nature Conservancy/Muleshoe website and read through all of the details about a stay at Muleshoe to decide whether it's right for you. It is a very special place off of the beaten path of tourist travel.
