The energy of the crowd was awesome. The announcer keeps the spectators engaged with play by play in the fast moving arena. Pure fun! Some dear friends are huge derby fans and brought us to our first game. We had a blast! As a newbie we thought we would be lost BUT nope...they have people who job it is to explain the game to you but they also project game rules and play on the screen before it starts. Its pretty easy to follow and wow does game play go by fast! Our friends try to get the VIP couch so we even got the full treatment which was neat. There are snacks at a pretty decent rate - hot dogs, nachos (which are crazy big and loaded!), sodas, candy and chips plus a beer/wine garden. Cash only so plan accordingly but their merch table can take cards and they have some pretty great merch. I loved the diversity seen here with age and this is a body positive zone with all different shapes and sizes - bravo! read more

What a fun lil place! We came here with my daughter's Girl Scouts and we got a discount on our tickets. You might also be able to get 2 passes to check them out through the Multnomah Library. I saw them listed for April 2019. We watched the Junior girls age 7-12 and them the older girls and I thought it was a great introduction to Roller Derby for our 7 and 8year olds. I would love to go back. Know before you go: Cash only concessions! Small bags of popcorn and bottles water were $2 each and they only took cash. Boooooo. I was lucky to have found a $20 bill in my wallet but wish I had known ahead of time. read more

Went to see a game with some friends who frequent these roller derby games as they enjoy watching this sport. Reminds me of when women's ice hockey was just starting out. I guess I am aging myself when I compare this sport to when women's ice hockey came on the scene sometime in the eighties. I guess at first, it was a bit confusing because I did not do my due diligence and research on the rules of how to play and what the calls were from the referees. What was good though was that during halftime, they did have some volunteers who came by each seated section to ask if anyone had any questions about the game. I raised my hand and asked a lot of questions. The person was very thorough and explained the game very well. Once the second half started, I became more glued to watching the game instead of surveying the merch booth across the way of where I was sitting or the beer/snack line. Yes, they do sell merch, snacks, and some adult beverages as well as the unleaded drinks. Overall it was a fun time. Not sure if I would get into this sport and go to more games but definitely enjoyable enough for me to sit through this one whole game. As for the parking and getting into the venue, see my previous review of parking for Oaks Amusement Park. Kind of a nightmare for parking and not sure yet if it's kryptonite for me to return to the venue to see another game. I did purchase tickets at the door and got there 30 min early. read more

Rose City Rollers ROCKS! we went to our first juniors bout (game) a few years ago.. had so much fun and were so inspired! my little kiddo took the initiative to find out that she could join when she turned 7..guess what she asked for on her 7th birthday?! to join RCR! She's been skating with Juniors for a couple of years and LOVES it. Coaches and staff are supportive and encouraging. There is sincere care for skaters' safety and progress. Scholarships and gear rentals are available! Bouts are so fun, we can't wait for the bout season to start up again! read more

Best time be ready to scream and loose your voice! You are in a big metal hanger with bleacher seating. There's porta potties outside and nicer clean mobile bathroom as well. Inside has a food stand with nachos, hot dogs, vegan wraps and dogs, paninis, pop, water, chips, candy and don't remember. They also have a booze booth with wine in a can, 2 town cider, and beers. All the vendors take cash only. There is also a merchandise booth for the playing roller derby teams. They take cards. The games are fast paced and so fun. They have helpers that go around answering questions and explaining the game and rules. The also always have 1/2 time games of some sort. They drag volunteers from the audience to participate and it's always a blast. This time it was musical chairs with the winner going up against 2 T-Rex. Yup. Sometimes they throw bread ot t-shirts at the audience. There's also always a raffle for a big basket worth a couple of hundred dollars worth of stuff. Tonight was $700. Tonight was The Break Neck Betties against the Heartless Heather's. The Betties are our team because our friend #8 Fleur D'e Lethal plays for them. It was a really close game! See fun pictures. The hanger is a big metal box. They do their best to control temperature by opening the door and fans. It is gets cold and hot dress accordingly. There is no internet connection. When I talk with fellow parents, Rose City's juniors is one of the few kids' programs I can recommend without reservation. With all volunteer coaches, the kids are learning an intense sport in an environment of safety, fun, and mutual respect. Also, the sport is so damn awesome! Within the Rose City league, my 10-year-old has excellent role models of all ages. Games are marvelous fun for kids and adults. As members, there are always lots of volunteer opportunities that build that sense of community even more. During Covid 19 shutdown, leadership has kept great communication and facilitated online events to keep both kids and adults connected. They've worked hard to make sure all members have access to gear for solo outdoor skating and the plan for slow return-to-skate at the hanger is clear, gradual, and following the highest safety measures with a close eye on the emerging science and local stats. Wow! Just had a great night at Portland Expo Center watching the Rose City Roller's Semi Final Championship! I've seen Roller Derby on TV, but seeing it in person is way cool. The players are awesome, exciting and much fun to watch. The action, almost non-stop. The place was packed but we didn't see any crowd problems. Great entertainment between play included, The Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers and The Wanderlust Circus. There was even a brief Michael Jackson tribute. These extra touches really make this a fantastic over-the-top event, there are some brains behind this show. Don't put your kids in the summer camp unless you want them to get hurt and not be attended to and not be called when your child was in pain all day! First day my child did not get water when requested. It was over 80 degrees and she asked Fera several times - was told someone needed to accompany her, but they kept putting her off. I showed up at the end of the day with a dehydrated child with an empty water bottle. OK - we addressed this the next day .. Day two- at about 11 am my kid falls. .. and falls hard! So much so she can't skate and asks for ice and to sit out. She was told by Fera to "shake it off, it's normal to fall". But Fera didn't see the fall. My kid couldn't skate but when she said she needed ice again she was dismissed. So being a kid she attempts to skate slowly and in pain...the pain keeps getting worse. Luckily lunch came and she still needed help, she and her friend were together -her friend sat consoling her through lunch but they are 10 and we're scared because they needed help but we're afraid to ask the "coach Fera" again. A bit passes and my daughter asks again...it's about 2 now...and they say they will get her ice....but no one does. Now my daughter is more scared and has no adult to advocate for her. She's asked a few times for help, nobody looked at her injury, asked if she needs to leave, filled out any incident report, nobody called us .. nothing. Being 10 she has no idea what to do but to ask her coach for help so she just suffered. I show up for pick up at 3 and she breaks out into tears in pain! I load her into the car to take her to urgent care but stopped in to talk to the "manager". Marcy?? who told me there was nothing they could do about the situation. No compassion for an injured child. No- "oh we are so sorry, let's get her some ice and help" ....the one thing she did say was that one of the teenagers must have ignored her.....that was the first time they passed the buck onto someone underneath them in rank. I was furious not only at them but caring for my child but passing the buck into another child! I then checked with my child to find out who kept ignoring her needs, as it turned out it was the adult coach, Fera. This made me even more angry as it was an adult not doing their job and they took no accountability for it!. I raised my voice at them as they weren't hearing that she needed help ..they just didn't care. I left shortly to get my daughter to urgent care. In the meantime we got some phone number and spoke with Katherine at the head office who told us a story how kids lie! Apparently her kid said something to a teacher at school and CPS was called in ...and of course since her own kid lies mine must too. This story can't get any worse...but it does, we ended up in urgent care that night ...she's now wrapped in bandages along her whole leg and we have to go see the pediatrician this morning. We called the owner of the Rose City Rollers, Kim Stegman....no call back, no nothing. Seems to be their policy....just ignore the injured. Keep your kids away. They can't follow their own policies and injuries go unattended. read more

First time at the roller derby... so much fun! It wasn't until about half way through we realized how hard these women are hitting, blocking, and gliding around the track. We started understanding the nuances and watched how talented Spring Roll and Witch Slap were at working their way through the blocks and scoring points! If you have not been, Go. It is exciting, fun, inexpensive, and you can take any age, etc. Food is pretty good, everyone is nice and after the game you can ride roller coasters so the park next door. read more

Just watched the rose buds championship today and was hooked at how much fun and how energetic roller derby is! It was so easy to feel a connection to the sport, pick a favorite team, and favorite players (Go Jewella de vil!) and get lost in the excitement of the game. The Rose City Rollers http://www.rosecityrollers.com/ are little Portland's instance of a nationwide revival of rollerderby. http://www.derbynewsnetwork.com/ These events are hands down the most enjoyable spectator sports events I have ever experienced. And as the largest derby in the country, they join my Portland world class list. After a flash debut at the Portland "Go By Train" Expo Center, the Rollers now split shows between the Memorial Coliseum and a warehouse at Oaks Park. They go on the road and they host other teams here. They currently have 4 regular teams, 2 all-star traveling teams, a beginner team, a recreational team and a junior team. All the regular teams have a costume theme, their "uniform", which helps keep the action on the floor clear. There are ridiculous half time shows, circus, small bikes, music. The audience is made up of wildly cheering grandmothers, parents with kids, floppy haired emo's, skinny jeans, slaves to the needle, pseudo punks, rockabillies, geeks, even seemingly regular people, in other words, a democratic cross section of Portland. People are friendly and united by the energy of the sport. read more

Maximum Bad Ass-ary. A good portion of each bout (which is derby speak for a round) I spend with my hands cupped over my mouth or my eyes, peeking out. As each women takes a hit or marginally escapes her captors I can't help but gasp. These women are nothing short of bad ass. They take a lickin' and keep on tickin' that's for darn sure. Roller Derby is such a great display of raw women power with a body positive edge. What's not to love! If you don't know how the game works but have an interest, Go! They explain it in some detail before the game starts and they have a booklet you can grab when you get in. Our teams here in PDX are chock full of powerful women ready to take some hits and deliver some blows in the name of a win. Most note-ably the High Rollers who come out skating with a straight up No Pity attitude. If your thinking about going to your first match, they would be a good team to see. Tickets are around $10-15 which is a small price to pay to watch these ladies leave it all out there in the rink. Sometimes I find myself daydreaming of my parallel life as a roller derby girl. Mostly I think about my name. Names that caught my eye this last time were "Brawn Swanson" and "Licker n Split". As someone who gets unreasonably upset over a splinter I don't know I'd make it very far in derby, but I have the utmost respect for these ladies. When I was young I was all about Spice Girls and "Girl Power" but I like the flavor of power Rose City Rollers are brining much more. read more

How awesome is it you get to live in a town where you get to yelp about a roller derby team?? I can't remember what train of thought led me to buy tickets to go, but we all ended up here. It was a lot of fun. I mean where else will you see player names like, Crotch Rocket? That's right, only where the bad ass chicks roll over each other on the loop, throwing elbows. It was crazy packed when we went and I should have bought tickets a little sooner and we would have had seats. Instead we ended up standing up for the entire event and that sucked. It was still a lot of fun since it was something I'd never really seen in person. It is something your should go see at least once. read more

My friend from down the coast is really into the rollergirls and I like going to baseball games, so we made a sports weekend out of it, with Friday being the Beavs playing Tucson and Saturday having the 4 PDX teams playing to see who would play for the 2008 title. We went to the Expo Center ($7 to park? Wow! No one else was having an event and the taxpayers paid for that place years ago....free parking puhleeze!) and were the first people in line. As more people came by we saw plenty of rollergirls come by and they were nice enough to hand out stickers, programs, etc. to us waiting in line. Great outfits too! So the eye candy quotient was met but how about the actual bouts? If you want to see some girls who know what the heck they are doing, you won't do any better for sports than a Rose City Rollers match. The amount of practice the girls put in was apparent and talent was in abundance for all four teams. The crowd? They filled almost every seat in the place! Not any bad actors were seen by me. People in PDX are the nicest people! Oh okay, so I don't live there and know all the warts but my impression of PDX people is 5 stars and I LOVE YOUR CITY! I also LOVE YOUR ROLLERGIRLS!!! If you knew me then you also know I say "There's two seasons, football season and Waiting For Football Season!". However, when the National Championships are held in November, my friend and I will almost certainly be there to watch the rollergirls from all over the nation play for 3 days. The PDX Wheels Of Justice will give a good account of themselves when it's time and I'll cheer my guts out for 'em! How many hardcore football fans from out of town would give up their fave game for rollergirls? I would and that speaks volumes about how good the game is and how well it is played, not to mention I have a "dog in the fight" in terms of having a PDX/Oregon team to root for. Some day these girls could sell out the Rose Garden if someone has the vision to carry the sport forward to it's full potential. They're a blast to watch, they show great sportsmanship, they're cute-n-sexy, they're hard-working and hustle. They're everything one could want, including friendly! Oregon at it's best. PDX at it's best. Go see the rollergirls and support them for all you're worth as they are one of your city's treasures, real people doing real things and doing it with complete enthusiasm and dedication. read more

No bias here, not in this review. These women are perfect. They can do no wrong. Go watch them, see for yourself. Prepare to have your mind blown. Full disclosure: there mayyyy be a little bias in this review. I may or may not skate for RCR. Not any of the fancy "home teams," or "travel teams," but with the rtecreational program. That being said, I happen to know how much time, money, dedication and themselves that these amazing athletes put into derby. And really, they do it for YOU, the fan. Wow, what a beautiful display! I don't understand the rules (even after watching "Whip It!" which I would recommend as a primer and because Ellen Page is awesome, but it's really an experience to watch these beautiful women trounce each other on roller skates. I think every woman that comes starts thinking about trying out for the team! Other reasons that it's awesome: women of all shapes and sizes seem really comfortable with their bodies and their athletic abilities, which seems to make this a great experience for women and probably a good thing in general. The announcers really bring you into the game. PBR in the tall can. What else would you drink at a sporting event?! Things to keep in mind: go with friends that can save your seat if you want to get up at any point after you've found a seat, the lines for beer are long, there are no real toilets, only outhouses, it gets a little warm in the hangar, and sometimes the seats are uncomfortable, if you get a seat at all, but hey, this isn't supposed to be fancy. It all adds to the experience. read more

Saw my first bout on Saturday, and it was great! A few things to call out: #1 - They have folks whose job it is to sit down with you and explain how the game works. This was very helpful, and I found this outreach to be extremely professional and just plain "nice". #2 - I was with a friend who brought his daughter who was around 10 years old. During the "t-shirt cannon" a boorish (adult) fan basically pushed his daughter down and stepped on her knee in her effort take the t-shirt away from her. This, of course, was beyond the pale. The Rose City Rollers made it a point to give my friend's daughter a t-shirt as well as some other inexpensive sundries to make up for the injustice, as well as the PA announcer "shamed" the offending adult, which I thought was nice. Overall, a class act for a less than desirable situation. I will be back, and likely will be a regular fan. read more

Derby really is a lot of fun if you do it right. When watching a bout at the hangar, show up at least 30 minutes early so you can sit in a chair (unless you don't mind rocking the bleachers or the ground), otherwise you won't get choice seats. Get beer early, and avoid the line to the 2 porta potties. If the bout is at the Expo Center, show up even earlier to get good seats. And beware of people trying to sit in the walkways in the bleachers (which makes it next to impossible to get up). My favorite team to watch is Guns N' Rollers, they have awesome players with a ton of character. Smack Ya Sideways and Blood Clottia rock my world!!!!! read more

The Rose City Rollers started a really cool event where you can rent roller skates and all the gear, and roller skate all around Oaks Amusement Park. It's a great way to have fun outdoors while still keeping a distance. They also gave me free water! I hope this event continues! read more

When my friend said she wanted to go to a roller derby bout, I was skeptical. "How the heck can you have fun watching people skate around in a circle?" I asked. I was so wrong! Not only did I have a blast, but I got really into it. By the end of the night I had favorite players that I rooted for and was ecstatic when Portland's team won the bout. Roller derby is always a good time.

This was a relaxed and silly fun thing to do on a super rainy Saturday night in Portland. Sure, there was a long line to get into the Coliseum, but it moved pretty fast, and once we got inside there were plenty of seats to pick between (and we weren't in the special "rockstar TM" area; we sat a row behind them and had a great view). The matches were fast moving and interesting; it seemed like an event anyone from families with kids to tipsy 20 year olds could enjoy. read more

We went for a scrimmage so I don't know how it compares to a normal match but if they are anything alike I am guessing a normal match would be awesome! It was super fun, we were entertained the whole time, and it was only $5 to get in for the scrimmage. I would recommend getting there early, it filled up pretty fast. Also, they have snacks for sale (cupcakes were really yummy) and beer and wine, which was really nice. One word of advice, if you want to understand what is going on brush up on your roller derby rules before you go, it was a confusing match for us (we had never seen roller derby before), but fun to watch none the less. My first time to watch roller derby, and boy, was it fun! Lots of bench seating, a few couches up front, but those cost a little bit more ( regular tickets $16, guaranteed seating $20 ) which is not a bad deal. The game last for an hour and half with halftime, (no show, just a chance to stretch out and get a drink or something) saw Axles of Annihilation against Reign of Terror, and it was a very good game. Will definitely be back, I recommend it to anyone who has never been to a roller derby game before, and of course to the seasoned fan. read more

First and last time to this event. We went to the Season Opener Scramble on 1/15/2011 at the Memorial Coliseum. We had bought tickets on-line and had to stand in the will call line (no print option) of about 80 people. A staff member yelled that all "Rockstar" level ticket buyers could be helped in a line on the other end of the lobby. When we reached that line we were told that it was for "Rockstar season ticket holders", so we had to go back to the first line which now had about 100 people in it. After getting our tickets we went to find our seats which turned out to be general admission. We could not get past a staff member because we did not have a red bracelet that goes with the "rockstar" tickets (nobody had given us any). Had to go back out to the lobby to get a bracelet, had to have our bags searched again because we left the main area for about 20 seconds, tried to find seat again and surprise! All "rockstar" seats were occupied. None of the staff members had a clue as to what was going on. In summary: 1) Tickets for specified seating levels should not be sold if the seats do not exist. 2) Staff members need to be trained so that they don't give incorrect/contradicting information. We were very disappointed. read more
