We went on a summer day - actually during a heat wave!…read more Vern the owner came out and greeted us and welcomed us into his cool garage converted lecture / teaching room. They had cool refreshments and snacks for us as well ! Since the day would be hot and Vern did not want to stress the dogs, he took us on the dog pull in his 4 wheel ATV which was a blast. The dogs loved to pull and pull - so much that the brakes on the ATV wore out. The dogs used the same voice commands as the Denali dog sled tour. Ha and Gi were the commands used in common. We went into the forest thru mud holes, water puddles, and very rough terrain which the dogs loved. Ironically, it was hotter in Alaska than Los Angeles by 15 degrees at the same time! It was so warm that all the mosquitos hatched and came out to attack. The Iditarod sled dogs don't seem to be bothered by them though. After we returned, Vern did his lecture on how an Iditarod team is built, planned, and executed. We learned quite a lot to be a competitor in a very grueling contest!

In its second season, it's getting busier and busier all the time. My dad bought a season pass and is definitely working towards getting his money's worth and I'm not far behind. If you're familiar with the different resorts around the area, I'd say that as it sits right now, Skeetawk is a mix between Hilltop and Arctic Valley... or Alpenglow if you're not as old school as I am. Anywho... At only 300 vertical feet and I believe 30 chairs on the lift, its a fun ride! It also beats hitchhiking back up the mountain road. As of right now, the offer porta-potties, which is a bit uncomfortable to say the least. A two story yurt houses the newly opened ski rental, which unfortunately, at this time does not offer snowboards. They're working on getting more gear, instructors and tuning... all of which, especially the latter two are quite important and sparse. As for the people... for the most part, pretty cool folks working up there... cashiers, lift attendants and patrol! I'm not going to throw anyone down the hill and bash them, but some could be a bit friendlier... well, one in particular in leadership. It seemed that if you weren't in her age group, not in her circle or something... I can't quite put my finger on why, but it came across that she just didn't care about you, your ability or what you had to offer, even to the conversation at hand. In making suggestions to reach out for a couple different things, I felt a bit of a cold shoulder, which is indeed a turn off when you're local and wanting to get to know people with similar interests and promote a new hill.... even if the only similarity is winter downhill recreation. It is what it is... and I don't see myself joining in on the conversation again. They have a long way to go... and need a lot of money to get there, but for now, it's worth it to go. It's a quick trip from my house, doesn't break the bank and is even nostalgic for those of us that rode backcountry up there and stayed at the Motherload back in the day.

This privately owned park is located within easy access of Palmer. There are about 100 spaces, most…read moreof which are pull through spaces and they generally have grass. The spaces tend to be level and most have full hookups. Power is currently limited to 30 amps, but the plan is to increase at least some to 50 amp in future. Gravel roads allow for fewer problems when it rains. There are several showers and a laundry room available. There are outdoor meeting areas for groups under a roof. There is a spacious lawn for tents as well. WIFI is provided with a code to join. There are great views of surrounding mountains and nights are generally quiet. We have now stayed here twice and would return. The park is Good Sam approved again in 2018. Plan ahead, it is a busy park.

You will not find a better place to stay in Palmer. Situated on a former crop farm field just south…read moreof downtown, the area is scenic and quiet. It is close to everything, including the Fair Grounds, many tap rooms and eateries, grocery stores and banks, recreational areas, and historic places. The cottages are new and have many conveniences, including full kitchens, comfortable furnishings, black-out shades, large televisions, wifi, full laundry, etc. Run under the Colony Suites group, the management is capable, professional, accessible, and courteous. Our guide Mark went out of his way to make sure everything was well taken care of - he was very experienced and knowledgable about all of the locations we visited. We really enjoyed the format - typically a day of travel broken up with stops for short hikes or interesting sights along the way. We setup tents and Mark cooked dinner for everyone. Camping was a blast and it was great spending as much time outdoors as possible. The second day at a location is a day trip of some kind. There are several options to choose from, our group was pretty small (6 people) and we all wanted to do the same things so pretty much stuck together most of the time. Walking out on the glaciers at Wrangell St. Elias and sea kayaking in Valdez were the highlights of the trip - would definitely recommend doing those. We also had the opportunity to tour the Kennicott mine and the nearby town of McCarthy which we enjoyed as well. The scenery on this trip was just amazing, we were constantly in awe of the beauty and peacefulness of the areas we visited. We'd highly recommend taking this trip with Alaska Outdoors - they've perfected the itinerary and know all the best places to go!

Thanks to True North our bucket list Alaska trip was fabulous. I could not have ask for anything…read moremore or better. They worked with our want to see list and our budget and made it work! The "extra" info in our travel packet made sure we ate great and saw everything in our path. I LOVED the fact that they gave us plenty of time to do and see at our own pace with no huge rush and massive timeline to keep. Anchorage, Seward (side trip to Whittier and Hope) Girdwood, Talkeetna and back to Anchorage. Easy drives and lots to see in do. Another HUGE advantage of having True North is with them knowing the people they booked our kayaking, halibut fishing and flight seeing with, we had really good experiences with all of them. I am recommending True North to all of my Arkansas friends!
