It's a wonderful school with amazing teachers! My kid enjoys it so much that sometimes it's hard to get him to leave at the end of the day, which has always made me feel good about the decision to go here. The school director, Lori has always been kind and helpful. She's also easy to get a hold of to ask questions through the app the school uses for signing in& out, and for communication. The summer school they offer is a great way for kids to play with their friends over the summer, instead of just vegging out in front of the tv while you get stuff done. :) The preschool has many flexible options regarding days per week, and half or full days. Our kid enjoyed it so much, including going to chapel once a week with his class, and getting to know Pastor Bob, and Rachel who is Director of Youth and Care Ministries, that the family started attending church here in 2025. We're still getting to know people here at the church, but from the very beginning this congregation has made us feel SO welcomed. The people here are authentic, and the love they have for Jesus is real. Coming to church here gives us the warm happy feelings, sort of like when we'd go visit extended family we really like. Between the 2 morning services on Sunday, there's adult bible study led by the Pastor, while the kids attend their own Sunday school. We enjoy the Bible study so much that we're planning on joining the Wednesday ones as well. You can go to their website and find all the events and times. Throughout the year, the church offers a Foundations class that can be helpful to new members, and is a great place to learn what the church believes & practices, as well as a good time to ask questions and get to know the Escondido & San Marcos campus Pastors Bob & Matt. Both Pastors are wonderful! Pastor Bob is mainly at the Escondido campus. We really like how he teaches from the Bible, and how he explains things. He's thoughtful, has a good sense of humor, humble, and ISN'T some righteous preacher talking down to the congregation, like I've unfortunately experienced at some other churches throughout my life. I can be quite shy when faced with a large group of people I don't know, which is why for so many years after moving back to the area to be near family we never attended any church. That's why I'm so grateful to this wonderful preschool, that lead us to this beautiful church. My family and I highly recommend Community Lutheran Church and Preschool, especially to those who want to attend church but might be nervous to try a new place.

I pulled my child immediately after learning the water bottle which we sent in for him was full of mold. After COVID the center encouraged families to send in water bottles and told us they would be washing them. The center lied and said they never told us they were going to wash it but they should have been sending the water bottles home every week. After someone from the main office investigated, we were told the teacher did wash the water bottles once per week. Look at the pictures... my chickens drink from a cleaner water source. If this is a clean water bottle I question the cleaning and sanitation of everything in that facility. It also infuriates me that the teachers continuously opened and filled this water bottle and gave it to my son. It smells, is full of mold, and is filthy. I am a teacher and would never allow this for anyones child. There is also no communication about your child's day or what items they need. Also, the centers main door is constantly being left open for the public to walk in and the door code is visible to the public. I want my children to be in a secure facility. Children's Paradise in my opinion is a reactive company not proactive. As a parent and educator , I no longer trust them not watch my children and would never recommend this daycare to anyone.

They're already in trouble with the daycare licencing board (you can search the SD Tribune for the neglect that's going on there) and they're still just as negligent, despite continually claiming that they're "improving." My child has been bit more times than I can count. At one point, they said she had at 1:00 (one person said the morning) she had a fever and, in their words, "a scarily fast heartbeat," but they didn't call me until 2:30. They didn't think a child with a pre-existing condition (asthma) experiencing tachycardia and a fever was an urgent matter, apparently. She's come home with scratches all over her face. Her incident report said they were noticed when they were on the way back to the classroom and that she was observed playing with branches earlier. When I asked the next day why they would let her play with branches without watching her (she was 18-months-old) they changed their story to she ran into child-sized bushes and they saw it happened. It's horrible. This place is horrible. I wish I had the money to take her to a better place, a safer place. But I don't. And even though these guys are on probation, even though they continue to get citations, it's not likely they'll close down. So what will we have? Just kids that continue to get hurt. What's it going to take, ECCDC? What's it going to take for you to change and care? Clearly nothing. EDIT: The morning after I wrote this, they terminated her without warning. I was late to drop her off (9:30) and said that although she had breakfast, she'd probably be hungry. They told me that breakfast was from 9-9:30, so I had to go down to the kitchen, which was fine. And then the director Jim stopped me while we were waiting for food. He told me that he was "disturbed" by my post (meaning Yelp review) last night and so he was in the process of terminating Athena's contract. I said that I just felt like I wrote the truth and that they were negligent and changed their stories in many instances where my daughter got injured. He then told me I was negligent because I left her there - uh, ok. And then he changed the story that it was because they couldn't meet meet my daughter's needs or my expectations (of her having any supervision at all?). He also says that this happens at EVERY daycare, which I know to be not true since I'm not the only mom I know. And then he told me that they were on probation because of "people like you" who continue to report incidents to licensing. He also said I was "hiding behind social media" despite my many face-to-face meetings with teachers, him, and other staff to solve the problem of my child getting beat up by other kids and coming home with unreported bites and scratches. So, we'll no longer be going there because I wrote a negative yelp review telling the truth about their absolute lack of supervision and poor decision making. Time to find a better daycare, because I know they're out there. Julie (front desk), Robert (front desk), Sam (supervisor), and teacher Nikki are the highlights of this place. May they find better places to work. I appreciate their kindness towards me and Athena. They did their best with a daycare organization with many, many problems. To the anonymous poster, "Germaine," there weren't children on the playground at the time. Yes, I did say "bullshit" and I was upset. I'm sure you would be, too, if your child who had been neglected and beat up at daycare and was terminated suddenly because of a yelp review on a day you had to work. That's cool that the daycare is working out for you - really, I'm glad - but to name me personally when you haven't walked a day in mine or my daughter's shoes and act like you know what's going on is, well, a little odd. Also, hi, Jim.

There are benefits, of course, such as small class sizes, individualized attention, and open dialogue between teachers and students. However, it also has its downsides. Please look at this list of criteria (created by me): Is your child considered "troublesome"? Is your child struggling with any sort of mental health issue? Is your child not Dutch/Caucasian? Is your child not a teacher's pet? Is your child not often a popular kid? If you answered yes to any of those questions, Calvin is not the place for you. I am not a troublesome student. I graduated high school with a 4.11 GPA. I got A's in almost all my classes no matter what school. However, I did struggle with my mental health starting freshman year, which is ultimately the reason I left the school. I received the label of being a "depressed kid" and was never able to shake it, and I ended up taking that on as my identity. I transferred to get a fresh start from the teachers and the students, and I did much better once I didn't have that label following me. There isn't blatant racism at this school, but in my class all the Dutch girls sat together, and all the non-Dutch girls sat elsewhere during lunch. I am not Dutch, so I sat elsewhere. The Dutch girls didn't say you couldn't sit with them but weren't welcoming to any newcomers in their group. There were no other friend groups in that grade. That's also pretty much how it went for every grade. Calvin has diversified since then, but the saying "if you ain't Dutch, you ain't much" is well-known and I would say it is true. All the Dutch students were favorited by the teachers as well, but that's because most of the Dutch kids had their parents go to school there, so they were really just "legacy" students who were automatically favorited. The trick for getting good grades is to be a teacher's pet. If the teacher doesn't like you, you're screwed. I was a teacher's pet, and I was able to finagle my way out of several bad grades by gaining sympathy from the teachers. If you're not a teacher's pet, Dutch, or a popular kid, you're going to have to do a LOT of hard work to get good grades that other kids get simply by having parents who went to the school. Most of the teachers were amazing. Shout-out to Mr. Marriott, Mr. Bakker, Mr. VDP, Mr. Beutlich, Mrs. Lapka, and Mrs. Lundgren. They made learning fun and were genuinely such kind-hearted people. I always felt safe around them. However, as with every school, there are teachers that aren't great. The history teacher, when I was trying to explain my ADHD to him in regard to the accommodations plan I had, just kept telling me, "Oh, it's like my tinnitus". He also refused to accept my accommodations plan to break up a 100-question test into two parts. When my mom reached out, he told her that the class has a B average, she's never taken the class, and would I be receiving a modified diploma? I took an incomplete for this class and retook it my senior year at my new school. I got an A+. Also, they do present that 100% of their students go off to college. However, that's not actually true. I had a friend who ended up faking that she was going to go to college (she wasn't) so that it would look like she was in the graduation ceremonies. They even got her college merch from the college she was supposedly going to attend. I would have never known had I not been close friends with her. This school has its secrets. Teachers were quietly removed from the school for reasons that were pretty big deals, such as inappropriate communication with students and emotional outbursts at students. As for the principal. I thought he was great... because my beliefs aligned with his and he took pity on me. Yes, he does meet with students with the blinds open for all to see. We once all saw a student get his backpack searched for drugs in the office. Whether or not he had drugs, the blinds should have been closed. His office is in a common passing place so everybody can and will see. The principal seemed to like me a lot, so we got along and I liked him, but I can see how others wouldn't like him. He is adamantly anti-LGBTQ+, which can be expected at a Christian school, but he expressed this in an unkind way. God still loves those that are LGBTQ+ and this principal did not express that. Last thing! I hope your kid loves public speaking. My class had to give 7-10 minute speeches with no notes... apparently, this is not a thing in public schools, and my class was graded quite harshly. Anxiety was not tolerated. It's good to learn public speaking, but 10 minute speeches without notes on subjects kids aren't passionate about? That's harsh, especially for sophmores. This was for sophmore year. I am ultimately glad I left this school, but I believe others can thrive here... just check that checklist!
