This place is great and has a small town feel even though it's right on busy North Avenue in Chicago. Dr. Lauren Barber is super careful with her eye exams and a great listener as well. Jennil in the front area is absolutely fabulous in every respect. My only criticism is that the selection of glasses frames is not especially good for people with small faces or those looking for relatively smaller glasses. read more

When I have gone there I have had a good experience- but trying to make an appointment is a nightmare. I called three different times and their "answering service" told me they were not accepting messages so I would need to speak to them directly. Little surprised by some of the comments here. I moved to Chicago and needed a new eye doctor and found the service at Nierman to be just fine. Dr. Kristie is knowledgeable and a good eye doctor. And the front of the house crowd is friendly. My contact fitting experience has been fine. As a business they are doing everything they should (like up-selling people on coatings and trying to get you to order contacts and lenses through them). This is nothing new. Most of the reviews I see here just point out that people are not informed about how vision insurance (or VSP) typically works. By the way, this is their newer office. I have been coming here for 4 years, the technology they use is always improving and my visits get easier and better every time. The tests that have gotten easier are: 1) Puff in the eye - not a huge blast of air in your eye anymore 2) Green vs Red - these are now simultaneous, instead of switching back and forth 3) Dilating of eyes - It costs extra (I think $10), but they can take a photo of each eye and see the health of your eyes. Which is far more convenient, no waiting of twenty minutes or impaired vision after wards. On top of that any of the doctors I have had there have been very personable and nice and have always answered what ever questions I have had. read more

I have been a patient of Nierman vision for three years now and they have exceeded my expectations on all occasions. I first came to them looking into getting LASIK, they connected me to the Kraff eye institute. After the initial examine and some discussion, I had PRK done about 2 years ago. Directly after the procedure they were attentive, helpful and treated me like not only a patient but a close friend. Through new allergies, dry eyes and other developments they have been amazing, I could not ask for better. I've had appointments with both brothers Nierman and most recently Dr. Kristie. All are very friendly, professional and offer great advice and solutions that are effective. I would recommend them to anybody. read more

An overall horrible experience. I visited during the summer for my annual eye exam and contact ordering. I enjoyed my initial experience at the Nierman Vision Center - Dr. Nierman was nice and apparently knowledgeable, and the front desk help was super friendly. I ordered a new pair of contacts and glasses. The staff told me my order would arrive within 1 week.... they arrived about a month and later. When they did arrive the prescription seemed off. I failed to tell them about the problem (my fault) but since then my eyes seemed to have adjusted. 4 months later I visited another eye doctor for an exam... it turned out my prescription was off by +1.0. WOW! Avoid this place at all costs! read more

I went to Nierman Vision for my recent vision prescription testing and had a great experience..at first my glasses came back a little off, so I re-tested (no charge)...and Doctor Nierman was wonderful...he was attentive to my requests about scaling back the numbers...he did a thorough re-test and he was wonderful. Tohonni, Brian and Harold took care of my insurance needs and got me a great discount ( which is difficult these days with insurance as it is) ...they are a great staff....when I sent my glasses in the second time they came back ready in three days...they bent over backwards to get my problem resolved. They are a great staff...and I will be going back to get another pair for sunglasses with my prescription...in the next few weeks. When I go somewhere I want honesty and upfront answers to my questions. When I called Rosin to make my appointment I asked the woman I spoke with if they have an issue giving me a copy of my prescription so I can take it somewhere else. The woman replied that there is no issue and there would be no fees. I ordered a pair of glasses there appreciating the fact that I received a copy of my prescription. I did not receive the pupilar distance number which is needed when I order glasses online. I asked the staff about it when I picked up my glasses and they said it would cost me $25 to get that number, which was the exact opposite of what I was told when I called. My glasses took 3 weeks instead of two weeks as quoted, with no update as to what is happening. When I did receive my glasses, the frames did not fit, and they aren't really helpful in reading and working on the computer. They ended up swapping the pair they use as a display with from the new pair I received from them from the factory which fit better but are not perfect. Bottom line is I want honesty. If I knew I would have to pay to get ALL the information required to order glasses online (which I was honest and upfront about from the very beginning) I would believe I had a better experience. The staff was nice overall, though there is a lot of whispering going when customers are there, which makes one self-conscious. I would be inclined not to purchase any more services from them. I have been going to this location for over 14 years, when it was Nierman's, and was at a loss when both Larry and David Nierman decided to retire and Rosin took over but thought I would give them a try since the location is great. For the last two years as Rosin Eyecare the service I've received is actually deserving of less than one star. The front desk staff are terribly rude and could care less if you come in or not. I've had my appointment for this year canceled twice now, even though I made it last year at my last appointment and even called them a month before to double check that it was still on the schedule. Sadly I will be looking for a new eye doctor. read more

I don't even want to get into the dramatic details of why this place dropped to one star, but the lesson is don't ever come here if you plan on using your insurance. My insurance lists this place as in-network on their website, which is why I came here. I'll admit I don't know the ins and outs of medical billing, but usually I get a bill or a refund within 3 weeks. I paid out of pocket for my visit after I was told that my insurance didn't cover my visit and I'd have to submit a claim manually, which, after a phone call to my insurance, proved to be completely false. Regardless of who made the mistake or what the disconnect was, it was resolved a month later that the vision center's medical biller at the other office (Buffalo Grove) would handle my claim, but it would take an additional 2 months (which would then be over 4 months after my initial visit.) It's been 6 months and I'm still getting the runaround and excuses, and I have a feeling i'm out of $100. read more

I love Dr. David and he is the only reason I will come back to this office. When "Rosin" called to confirm my random appointment that was automatically set, that I could not be at, I asked about dates when rescheduling. I wanted to make sure it would be covered by my insurance. When I arrived for my appointment I was told I could not have an exam covered until the following day. It's a frigidly cold day, I've spent $15 on transportation, and an hour of my time to not be able to see the doctor. They were unaccommodating when trying to set up a different appointment. This is something that the system should have caught before I arrived for my appointment. As much as I love Dr. David, I'm considering taking my business elsewhere. I never had these administrative issues when it was Nierman Eyecare. I really hope they do something to change my opinion of the office. read more

Such a wonderful experience every year. Patient with me as I blink and squirm. Neirman is always on top of the new gadgets! No more dilation and no more air puffs! And when the images load, he walks you through how he calculates the health of your eye and how it relates to other things in your body. For the strong stomached folks, he'll walk you through images when folks had various problems with their eyes. I get contacts and eye glasses from there as well. We've worked through adjusting brands and types of contacts until we landed on ones that were comfortable for my crazy hours. My glasses are great! They've updated lenses as well as provided new frames and worked with me to make sure they were affordable. I recommend Nierman to everyone even though there's an eye doctor in the family. :) read more

.................... I don't really want to write this review, but I think it is necessary. Let me start by saying the staff is very friendly and outgoing. The selection is fine, nothing too exciting. It seemed a bit pricey to me, but I haven't shopped for glasses for a few years, and not in Chicago, so it could be reasonable. One big thing bugged me about my stop in here. I had an appt, needed to get a prescription for glasses. I get my contacts online and I have a fairly full stock right now. I told the doctor when she asked me, I said I didn't need a 'scrip for contacts, just glasses. She kept asking about it, suggesting why I may need it/should have it. I tried to get her to just do the exam, write up whatever it is I need to get glasses, and get me the hell out of there. She asked about fitting me for contacts, blah blah blah, finally I said, just go ahead. I was going to need it eventually anyway, I figured, so just do it now, save myself a trip. Wrong. She did, and when I went to pay, thinking I was only going to be paying my co-pay, it ended up being an extra $85-- all because of the fitting for my contacts. Apparently my insurance doesn't cover this. It really bothered me, because I didn't need anything for contacts- just glasses. The doctor was very sweet, but she made it sound routine, like something I needed and should have done. Maybe I should have known better, but maybe she shouldn't have convinced me to get something that my insurance company doesn't think is necessary. Boo. The people are nice here, friendly, helpful. But watch out. I would ask about cost before going ahead with anything. read more

The doctor and staff were nice overall. However, I was disappointed with several other aspects of my visit. For one, I was not given my glasses prescription after my appointment. Since getting this prescription was the primary reason I went to the eye doctor, I was disappointed that I was not given this. I was given other paperwork after my appointment and assumed that my prescription was included with the paperwork. I did not notice that they did not give me the prescription until I got home. I ended up having to go back to their office to pick up the prescription. On top of this, I did not receive an apology for this inconvenience. I was also surprised by a few things the doctor did during my appointment. When he took my glasses to see what prescription they were, he commented that the prescription was very strong and asked if I get headaches from wearing them. I was surprised by this since my prescription hadn't been updated in a few years. A few minutes later, the doctor said that he forgot to hit the "reset" button on the machine he was using and actually my prescription was weak. Maybe he was just having an "off" day, but I thought it was odd that he'd make such a mistake since he presumably uses this machine quite frequently. After my appointment, the doctor gave me sample contact lenses. When I looked at the prescription on them, I noticed that it was slightly higher than what he'd told me. I mentioned this to him to make sure it was correct, and he promptly changed the prescription. I guess that means I would have had the wrong prescription if I hadn't asked about it. read more

I've been back and forth to Nierman for the last 20 years (left because of job changes/Insurance). Drs. Larry and David Nierman are simply cool dudes and darn good optometrists who get your prescription right. They were the first to identify a stigmatism in my right eye that baffled the "chain" eye places. But if you want cookie cutter, impersonal, don't want doctors who care about you, then don't go here. As for the $5: become a patient and they'll treat you right. At their North Ave. location because it is a high-traffic area, if they took EVERY soul off the street who needed glasses tightened, they'd do nothing but fiddle with people's glasses for free all day. read more

I have been to many odd Eye Doctors but Neirman is not one of them. The staff and Doctor really care here, are super nice and helpful too. Also, I think Dr Neirman is really an A Class Eye Pro. I only walked in because they happened to be en route of my commute and I just had a few questions but within only a few minutes the doctor took me back and I had an exam and was all set up with my insurance information (VSP) and everyone was extremely friendly. I had just moved to Chicago from the suburbs and usually booking an appointment would take a few weeks but I was fortunate enough to get right in. The technology was wonderful, much better than what I've seen in the past and the doctor was very thorough on the explanation of everything. My contacts came very quickly and even though my insurance only allows me contacts OR glasses (fml) they worked with me on a new patient offer to help save me some money. He wasted my time and benefits on a completely worthless script and pair of readers -- after three visits and clearly stating my needs at the onset, I'll never let that guy waste my time again.) I've had the best results with Dr. David Nierman. David is "the man", we trust him completely. Asked him about corrective eye surgery 10 years ago, and he gave the wise counsel "technology is only getting better with time. Wait another ten years." Well, we waited 10 years and found the perfect vision correction procedure (Custom PRK: no incisions/flaps. 3-4 day recovery, and AMAZING new vision. Dr. Paul Bryar, NMH vision correction center). I will always return to Dr. David Nierman for all my vision needs. read more

It's unfortunate that Nierman was bought by Rosin Eyecare. I used to get my glasses at Nierman for years and never thought twice about going anywhere else after I had excellent experiences repeatedly. Unfortunately, the old staff (especially the guy who used to work with me for my glasses) is no longer there and the policies have changed substantially. I used to take my frames in (I love frames and have many) and just buy the lenses from Nierman, who always had the best price in the area. Now, the office has added a new fee for the same lenses if the customer didn't buy the frames from the office and the customer is required to sign a waiver stating that it's his problem, not Rosin Eyecare's, if Rosin's lab breaks the frames in the process of putting in new lenses unless the customer buys the frames from Rosin. I'm sorry, but that says to me that the business does not stand behind its work, is not confident in its abilities, and it does not guarantee quality services (and it's just a way to try to pressure a customer into spending more money). Customer satisfaction is no longer the priority here. Any professional who is confident of his abilities and prides himself on customer satisfaction would give a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee, accept responsibility for his work, and do whatever is necessary to fix any problems. Asking me to sign a form in advance that says I'M responsible if YOU break my $600 frames is a joke! Oh, well, I'm glad I at least had years of excellent service under the old owners with the awesome staff, and I'm glad I learned about these new ridiculous policies before buying anymore stuff from here! read more

I echo Chayla's comments on them making the contact fitting seem routine and then hit you for $85 on your way out. I walked out feeling misled. The other problem I had was that they misdiagnosis with my vision. I mentioned to Dr. Larry that I had an astigmatism before my examination. Following the routine examination (and additional contact fitting) he mentioned that I must have grown out of it. I know this is possible so I took my glasses perscription and get it filled at Lens Crafters.... huge problem... I can't see a thing. I go back and they charge me for a refitting. Same problem. Go back... re-examine and boom I have an astigmatism now! No reimbursement from the previous appointment. No sorry about that, nothing. I originally used them because they are close to my but I would rather have poor vision than visit them again. read more

I'm really surprised to see any bad reviews here! I saw Dr. Nierman for the first time two years ago. His staff was incredibly kind and patient with me - as someone in my mid-20's this was my first eye exam (how this happened, who knows). Dr. Nierman took his time explaining how the exam would work and what would happen at each stage. As I suspected, I needed glasses to correct a vision problem I'd been having. I found a great pair of frames and picked them up about two weeks later. My headaches have reduced significantly, and I owe it to Dr. Nierman and his staff. Thanks guys! read more

One of the most frustrating things when you move is trying to find new doctors. I was very luck to stumble across Nierman Vision Center on North Ave. David Nierman is the best eye doctor I've ever seen! He is thorough with his exams, and truly cares about making his patients happy. Not only was the exam great , his front desk staff is also on point. Last month when I went in for my yearly exam and to pick out new frames the front desk girls were incredibly helpful and patient with me during the process. After receiving my glasses a week later his staff went above and beyond and called me to make sure my glasses were fitting comfortably. Due to the fact that my eyes had changed so much, my new glasses were hard to get use to. I told his staff , they asked me to come back in so they could look at my glasses. Not only did Dr. Nierman examine my eyes again he sent the glasses back in to the manufacturer to be fixed. Thank you Nierman Vision Center you guys are great!! read more

Run away from this place. A VSP Insurance acceptor, they will tack on every up-charge they can. I just hung up the phone (post-visit / post-payment) with one of their staff extolling the virtues of non-glare coating (and an extra $60 up-charge) for my reading-only glasses because of the "possibility of glare problems associated with night driving." No, I'm not kidding. These guys are in the neighborhood and the frame selection is pretty good. But they are primarily concerned about getting as much out of you and your insurance plan as possible. Look for another provider that actually has your eye-health in mind. read more

Bills consistently seem to include upcharges that aren't covered by insurance and are double (or triple) the fees that appear to be charged by other vision providers for the same service. If you go, make sure you understand what is or is not covered by insurance so that you won't be surprised by the bill. Better yet, go elsewhere.
