Barely a-ok. BARELY. I saw Dr. Doren because I thought I had some sort of infection in my eye. I had gone to Physicians immediate care a day earlier and they had misdiagnosed my issue as allergies. The doctor was very nice, and seemed very capable. He diagnosed two different issues and wrote me a scrip, then booked for me to come back a few days later to see how well my eye responded to the medication. I had to do a full round of antibiotics and put cream on my eyeball. I am now healed from that issue, so that part is A-ok. My issue with this office has more to do with their "office policies". First of all, I was annoyed that the Dr. kept trying to get me to come back over and over for expensive office visits to confirm that the treatment was working. If I hadn't said no for the 3rd visit I would still be paying for office visits to this day as my insurance doesn't cover office visits completely. I had already paid a couple hundred bucks to get my eye fixed with insurance if that tells you anything. What prompted me to write this review was the way they handled the next issue. I received a bill from the place where I was misdiagnosed (never saw a doctor, just an arrogant nurse guy who barely looked at me). The bill was inflated and that pissed me off so I called them to see if they could make an adjustment for the misdiagnosis and bad service I got since they were billing me a few hundred bucks too. They said they would need a fax from Dr. Doren's office stating what the actual diagnosis and treatment was so they could proceed. I called Dr. Doren's and asked them to send this info and she agreed. A few days later I get a call from Physican's Immediate care about the info they received. Seems Dr. Doren's office just sent a scribble from a prescription pad with the prescription on it. Frankly, I think this should be enough, but that is for another review, but they said they needed my records which should include the findings, including the diagnosis and the treatment prescribed. I called Dr. Doren's office back to ask that she do this and she sighed heavily for being put out apparently and said she would "have to speak to Dr. Doren" about this and that there would be a $15 charge to release my records because this takes "extra time". Jesus H. I said, well then can I just have my own records then since I've paid for this already? and she said, No, it's still $15 to get my own records released. I have a file of all of my medical records, blood work results, etc etc and have never had to pay one red cent for them. I do not understand what is the big deal of helping one of your patients resolve this issue. Instead they see it as an opportunity to nickel and dime me to death. I'll seriously have to reconsider whether or not I will return to this Doctor again because of how unhelpful they have been with this situation. It's a small office, no nurse, just the person at the front and the doctor and they are conducting business like it's a giant bureaucratic establishment. I am very disappointed. So, the story goes like this. I'm pretty sure someone I know snotted into my eye accidentally, since the next day, my left eye turned red like a cherry and was driving me nuts. Compounded with my natural hypochondria, I was pretty sure I was on the verge of permanent blindness, so I had no time to track down my cousin the Ophthalmologist. I went to my insurance company's website to see who was close to me, and found Dr. Doren at the Masonic Hospital medical offices, just blocks away from my house. Board certified, looked like a good doctor - no reviews on Yelp, but then again, he isn't exactly running a nice Tapas joint. I decided to give him a call - and left a message on this voicemail, lamenting that I for sure had a complicated viral infection that almost certainly was going to travel up my optic nerve and cause my brain to swell. He called me right back, and was able to squeeze me in 2 and a half hours later. I went in, and I must have been the first appointment right after lunch, since the office was just opening up. He called me in, was very direct in his questioning - took some complicated looks at my eyes with funny lights and funny eyedrops, soundly reassured me several times that I was not in fact at risk for encephalitis. He was receptive to my questions - I felt like he took a thorough examination of my eye - I didn't feel slighted one bit, even though he was expeditious in his work, and to boot, he was walking distance from my apartment. I looked him up online, and I think he is particularly expert in disorders or infections relating to contact lenses, but absolutely, I would feel very comfortable going back to him with any medical eye issue. He wanted to take a look at my eyes in 12 months, and I think as a plan, I'll be seeing him once a year here on out. In all, I think what gratified me the most is that he came through for me in a bind, and was fast and thorough and made me feel comfortable. Recommended! read more

After cataract surgery with another Ophthalmolgist I was unable to read and had a feeling of unbalance the doctor kept telling me I had to get "used" to the lens but I knew something was wrong and I needed to see another Doctor. Dr. Doren was highly recommended A careful and thorough examination revealed the lens was put in "off center" causing my vision problems.Through corrective surgery Dr. Doren was able to center the lens and give me back my vision and a great sense of wellness. I had detached retina and they told me the soonest they could see me would be 5 weeks away.

Dr. Doren is great! I had also been misdiagnosed, but by an optometrist. Dr. Doren immediately knew what was wrong after looking at my eye for 30 seconds. I have also had to return a ton of times, but I actually like this. He wants to make sure that the treatment is working and the only way to do this is to look at my eye. I feel more comfortable knowing that things are progressing. He and everyone in the office are always extremely friendly and professional. I have no complaints. read more

One of the best eye doctors! Dr Doren has been treating my wife and I for a number of years. He is very knowledgeable. My wife has a recurring eye issue that needs attention right away. I experienced what I found out are called "flashers', light appearing , as though someone took a picture with a flash. I was scared. I called a nurse, and although she was not supposed to refer, but just help.. she told me that the best doctor was Dr. Doren, her opthomologist ..and she was RIGHT! Dr. Doren made room for an appointment for me right away, and he has been my doctor now for ten years. If you go to him, you will be with an expert. In the waiting room, one time. this older lady said that she had eye surgery with Dr. Doren, and he was so particular, he would not allow any one else, like even nurses, to examine or treat her eyes after the surgery. I said, "That's PERFECT". It is a extremely well run office.. you won't be kept waiting. You will feel that your eyes have had a really gifted doctor examining them, and watching carefully for any changes. You have Dr. Doren to rely on. read more

Dr. Doren is the epitome of a great doctor. His demeanor is wonderful. He is compassionate and very attentive. He's a top notch ophthalmologist. I began seeing Dr. Doren 7 years ago for regular eye exams, as well for my young 7 year old daughter. I have entrusted his service and have introduced many patients to him, including my elderly 94 year old aunt and my 88 year old mom. He had performed cataract surgery on my mom, whom has Alzheimers. This could've been difficult since my mom is very skeptical with doctors, but since he is a very calming person, it went perfectly. He just has this relaxing feel about him that is nice in a doctor. My 7 year old is very frightened by doctors, but is comfortable with him. I'd recommend him to anyone that needs an awesome ophthalmologist. read more

My Mom had a terrible experience with another Ophthalmologist (from beginning to end, everything that could go wrong, did). I had heard great things about Dr. Gregory Doren, so I suggested she see him. I'm sure that it must be difficult for a physician to start in the middle of a case with a new patient that had been seeing one of his colleagues, but Dr. Doren handled it very professionally. He obtained my Mom's records, reviewed them with the first doctor, and made recommendations. He put her at ease with his wonderful bedside manner, compassion, attentiveness, and expert knowledge. My Mom is so happy, feeling 100% again and I am so relieved. read more

My GP told me I needed to see my ophthalmologist due to an urgent eye infection and needed to check to make sure my eye was OK. They wouldn't squeeze me in for over a month. Seriously? A month? Wow. Will seek eye care elsewhere from now on. read more

I was frightened when I began to see flashes in my eyes..as though someone in the room was taking pictures with a flash. I frantically consulted a nurse on the Phone line at Resurrection, and she explained that this sometimes happens as we age (I was 65) and the gel in the eye can touch the retina and that causes the flash, and she said she sometimes had that too........and so I asked her who was her opthalmologist....and she said she was not supposed to be giving referrals..but I asked her to help me and she told me that Dr. Doren is her doctor. I was travelling in Dayton Ohio that weekend (I live in Chicago) and as soon as I called the message went to his cell, and I think he called me back ...in half an hour. He was so good to me..took me right away. I had a very thorough exam, and the doctor reassured me that my retina was not torn..and he explained the condition. I was given an extensive exam on the range of my vision..and the results were shown to me and explained. He prescribed eye drops (which on my drug plan are not expensive). He asked me to return in six months to keep a check on the condition but to call him immediately if anything at all occurred. And here is some hearsay from a senior lady in the waiting room when I returned six months later... We were chatting and she said Dr. Doren had operated on her eye, and that he would not allow any nurse to touch the dressing, but meticulously did everything himself.."He's a perfectionist!" she said with a smile. Opthomologists ARE perfectionists..if they are good. Dr. Doren is excellent. I am so grateful to have him as my doctor...Do not hesitate to call him to help you. Thank you. Wendy read more
