I did a quick lap around to see what was available. I needed fresh produce, and I found exactly what I was looking for. There was a good selection of heirloom tomatoes at a few of the vendors. The Harvest Valley Farms table is huge and they always have a good selection for a reasonable price. They also take credit cards which is helpful. I can't get all of my groceries here, but it is nice to get some local produce in the middle of the week.

Or something…read moreextra... but the regulars are Simmons, Janoskis, "the farm family", near Wood street bakery (fridays) and Pitaland,who have a fantastic variety of produce/herbs/plants, "the older guys" down towards the kettle corn (this doesn't arrive till June) Then you have food vendors- like Acou try Style Pizza, shaved ice, local honey, Coyne Family meats, the fudge lady, etc sorry I cannot name them all! Fridays only in May, then Things start rolling in June-August. Best part, this goes until November; it's covered, mostly enough parking except be prepared when corn season hits. Last Friday, the first market, Janoskis brought, French carrots, fennel, Sorrel, plants, tons of lettuces and cabbage- just to name a few. The AMAZING wood Street Bakery had their fresh breads, cinnamon rolls- so much good stuff that's hard to choose! And a new vendor came selling beautiful tulip bouquets. This has been a family favorite stop for over 20 years that we've lived nearby.

We arrived a few minutes after 5:30pm and there was a bit of a crowd already, but not the same magnitude of farmer's markets in the bay area. We only picked up a few veggies and fruit, all fresh and crispy, though one of the ears of corn we got had some smaller kernels compared to the rest of the bunch. Also managed to get some baked items, some gifts to take home, plus freshly cooked chinese dumplings! Besides the fresh veggies, these were a highlight considering there isn't much local asian food to choose from and definitely some of the better made dumplings I've had. Not too salty and not too oily. Great place to pick up a quick dinner or some last minute veggies.

Because I have every other Friday off, on the weeks I'm not working that day, I'll go to the one in Bloomfield instead. They have a decent selction of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and cheeses. Not all of it is organic though. Even so, although you might pay a little more than at Giant Eagle, the produce here is way better. I don't know--I guess fruit and veggies are always better when they have flavor. And of course, it's always fun schlepping home a shopping bag full of produce and my briefcase on the bus.

This year was my first time attending this farmers market. Vendors had set up tents and were selling vegetables, meats, fishes, eggs, breads, pastas, kombucha, olive oils, sauces, honeys, jams and jellies, prepared foods (e.g., pierogies, quiches, Greek foods, tamales and empanadas, snow-cones), alcohol, flowers, ceramic dishes, etcetera. My husband and I purchased a few items of food from two vendors. We could not do all of our grocery shopping here, but this farmers market was a decent size. The vendors and the other customers were very friendly. My husband and I felt happy to try new products and to support small, local farms and restaurants.
