Took advantage of the 7 days for $7 trial, which frankly should be illegal--charging that little for a solid workout class feels like a crime. But I'm not complaining! I was a monthly member at the Boerum Hill location of Row House before it suddenly vanished at the end of 2023 (RIP). This Chelsea location doesn't have quite the same layout (a bit more cramped, lighting if you're stationed in the back row is a bit intense), but it gets the job done. The best part? Rowing is effort-based, so no pressure, no intimidation--just you vs. the machine. And thank god it's effort based, as the second class I went to I was fully wiped (but couldn't let that $7 deal get away from me!) but still managed to get through the full class without burning out. Their app is great--tracks meters, best effort, and makes booking super easy. I went to two classes, and the standout was with Chris, who played what I initially thought was just a suspicious amount of SZA... only to later realize the class was literally called "SZA Full Row." Iconic. Would 100% come back if I lived or worked nearby--alas, I don't. But if you do, it's definitely worth a row! read more

"Good but could be better" I like Rowing and I've been to a few rowing places over the years in Manhattan. The problem is they have closed. Seems like it's an occasional thing not a dedicated core of people so maybe that's why they fail. But it's still a good diversion, different exercise. The good - machines are nice and keep track of your stats very class and lifetime ! The bad - A studio could use a renovation - class structure is but boring and the rowing and weights get tediously boring at times The ugly - I don't get how constant babbling, in an unintelligible monotone is motivating or helpful. I've visited this location multiple times when I work nearby and it's not ideal unless I'm desperate for a workout. Firstly, the front staff are aloof when you have questions. They don't manage the women's locker room well as the lockers were dirty and had hair, toilets uncleaned. It seems like the location is older and it reflects heavily. Otherwise, plus points for the instructor I took classes with so far. Coach Josue Nunez gets a 5 star. His classes ensure I feel the burn and he's extremely attentive to the clients. There also seems to be a new courtyard now, so I hope the location makes changes to continue improving the site as I'd love nothing more than to give it better ratings! read more

The class: I've been mostly going to classes on weekday evenings, and they tend to be mostly full but not difficult to book a few days in advance. You pick your seat when you sign up for the class, so your stats get automatically logged to your account afterwards. If it's your first time, the teacher will help you get set up and show you proper form. The music is mainly top 40, pop, and EDM. Everyone in the class rows to the same rhythm and they display the class' average splits up on a screen which makes it a little competitive. The studio: The lobby area isn't very big but there are a few benches if you're waiting for class.The women's locker room here is incredibly clean and well-stocked with lotion, hair ties, hair dryer, etc. There are also showers which they provide towels for. Overall, I think Row House is an awesome full-body workout. Another thing I really like is that the classes aren't full of super fit 20-something-year-olds like you sometimes see at other workout studios; there's a pretty big variety in age and body type which makes it seem more authentic. The only con is they are a bit pricey. read more

Hey it's been a year at row house and so much has changed in my life thanks to this incredible class I lost 45lbs in a year and completely stopped all other forms of exercise I do (besides walking all over the city, that is). No diet, no weird shit. Never took more than 5 classes a week. Just fantastic rowing and floor work. I feel like a new man and I'm excited to take things to another level in 2020. The app is sleek and easy to use. To book your class, review your stats, etc; staff is also incredibly friendly and always available to help you out. They feel like family man. I love rowing as a workout, and this does provide the interesting option of a group rowing workout. The workout was solid (not the most intense in the world) and instructor was enthusiastic and great with helping with form, but I'm not 100% sold on rowing as my group workout of choice. At times, a premium is put on keeping in synch with the class. It seems hard keeping everyone at the same rhythm. This is why I didn't row in college (well, that and I went to college in The Bronx, so what the hell would we be doing with a rowing team. But I digress...). I found the lack of synchronicity a bit distracting at times in a way I don't think it is when, say, people are at slightly different effort points in a spin class. Still, I felt good after the workout and enjoyed the structure (basically 3 10 min. rowing intervals broken up with shorter floor/body exercises), felt I improved my workout form, and am intrigued enough to give it another try. As a final note, the bathroom/shower area in this space is a tiny joke. I would hesitate to come here if you don't live nearby and/or just DGAF about showering after your workout! read more

I go to Row House when I need the motivation from the awesome instructors to go the extra mile. I've been going to Row House for years though not as often as my schedule permits recently. I don't think there is a competitor that can do what Row House do. Row House success is attributed to the instructors, ambiance (e.g., bright lights in the lobby, hallway, and bathroom), class structure, music (music varies from each instructor), the score tracking, and classroom set up. They also offer a buy one get one free class promo. They are on ClassPass as well. The studio space is not big but it is reasonably clean and organized. The ladies bathroom and towels are clean. I found the front desk person very helpful. I also like how the rowing machines aren't so close to each other. read more

BE VERY CAREFUL with Row House. I was sold a promo deal after my free trial at the row house in the summer. In November they start to charge my card hundreds of dollars. I figured this was a mistake and contacted them. They have apparently hired a new GM who I feel like might be the real problem cause I have never really had issues there in the past. He was hostile and just threw insults instead of solving the problem or letting me speak. I was shocked I have never been met with such trashy attitude from a gym before. Perhaps he was drunk cause he was slurring his words. So I ended the call and try to reach someone else to understand these charges. I was told I had agreed upon a contract in the summer which I had never seen and there was no signature on it. I pointed this out but received no response. They gave me no logical explanation other than that they aren't willing to refund the money they took now for classes I took AND paid months ago. Since they have no logical or legal basis I feel like I will win this dispute but it's so disappointing. I can't believe row house is now FRAUD. I would say be very careful and if you purchased any classes or memberships from them in the past block your card. I don't recommend this business at all now even though it may have been good in the past. read more

Easily 5+ stars. It's about time I wrote a review for this place. First discovered this on Classpass and it's hands down the BEST class in NYC. (And I've been to a lot of classes) Not only is it a full body workout but the instructors are great and teach you how to fix your form! No point in working out if your form is messed up and most places don't take the time to help you. The classes I've been to have been a mix of speed and endurance drills. In between, you get off the machine and do planks, squats, ab workouts etc. Definitely try it out!! You will feel a difference the next day. read more

Amazing workout with great instructors. Clean space with lockers that have built in combo locks built in so you don't have to bring your own. Considerate supply of tampons and hair ties in the locker room if you need it. This class teaches you to work hard but also to pace yourself. It teaches you that going slower doesn't mean putting in less work or strength. The music and the setup may be a bit reminiscent of other classes like SoulCycle, but the instructors don't talk quite as insistingly. You get a report of your overall meters rowed, fastest pace, and average pace emailed to you at the end of the class. This class made me feel accomplished and capable. read more

While the outside area might not be inviting, the inside of the studio is very nice! For your first time, here's what will happen-- you sign in, then pick your "machine" on a piece of paper for each class. Honestly you can sit anywhere, but if your first time try to sit in the middle second/back row so you can watch the instructor. They have keypad lockers (aka combo locks), and showers/bathrooms. There's some retail area in the outside as well. Before class, grab a towel right outside the studio. Next you'll go into the studio and they'll get going. We did the full body workout which had endurance on the machine as well as drills off the machine. Overall a great workout! Definitely an arm and core workout! And the instructors friendly, may be helpful to have a mini intro to the machine prior to class if it's your first time on a row machine! read more

Came here through ClassPass to try something new and absolutely loved it!! I'm a sucker for some great service & the moment I walked in for a Saturday 9:30 class I was greeted with smiles :) they briefly explained what to expect in class, where the lockers were etc. I felt welcome immediately. I quickly realized how much I loved the fact that rowing is all about how much you put into it as an individual and there isn't much pressure in a class setting because of it. The ab work between row sets was TOUGH but again, the instructor made it clear that we could adjust for ourselves. Was a big fan of the simulated wave noises, subtle but definitely added to the ambiance and arbitrarily enough it was like my fav part of the entire class anywho, this place is great, and the class is definitely a fit for all levels from beginner to advanced. If I were ever stranded in the middle of the ocean and had to row to get to reach land, I'd say it's likely that I'll be lost at sea. Rowing looks easy...until you're the one doing it. Like me, you probably thought about the slow, relaxed, lovey-dovey seamless pace at a pond, but now I really empathize with the gentlemen that are (at most times) the backbone of boating on a date. It's not all arms--you actually put your body to work, AND most times, you need a strong woman/man to do it. If a woman or man is willing to do all the rowing work on a date, she/he is most likely a keeper. Scott lead the class and he was an amazing instructor--it was great to learn from someone who used to be a competitive rower and know what he's talking about. He was patient and took the time to teach the beginners. I didn't know any better on form before this class and was mostly dependent on my arm muscles, but I have to give it to Scott for really teaching me the proper form and the most efficient way to use my whole body. I also learned that hitting under 30 mph is good and the better as your speed lowers; apparently it is more efficient when you recovery slowly and progressively work up a stroke, using all you've got and as fast as you can. Great light cardio in between all the rowing. It was quite a different workout for me, but I'd say if you've never taken a rowing class before and are curious, or even want to improve your form, this is an interesting and fun class to learn. One class wasn't enough to help me better my form, but I've gained a lot of insight on how to use my entire body to row. Not sure about the other Row House locations, but like many Chelsea workout studios, this location was small, although the studio room itself had ample space; women's changing room was very dense and a bit uncomfortable to be in. read more

Row House managed to break the stone-cold exterior of my gym-hatin' heart and carve out a regular routine in my calendar. Yelp I am not a fan of the gym. Going to the gym for me is how I imagine dogs feel when they're being forced to take medicine and you gotta pry their jaws open and then clamp it shut until they swallow and even then they manage to spit the pill out. HOWEVER, I've been coming here on and off for about a year and what I cannot deny is the joy of a couple of things: 1. Results. If you come here twice a week you'll see results pretty damn quickly. I spend all day sitting in the office, I'm not a diet-er (which isn't to say I don't try and avoid 'bad' food in general), I'm totally LAZY and yet just making the effort to come to Row House regularly has me fitting better into clothing than any diet or solo YMCA trip ever did for me. I like being in a class where I'm being told what to do and for how long; I'm not a self motivator and so it definitely helps to be able to turn my mind off a bit and just focus on the moment. Also the rowing machine's screen will show you how far you're going and at what speed, so seeing yourself improving week by week is really obvious. 2. The ability to get a full body work out while sitting. Yeah sure I'm still sweating my ass off but damn do I enjoy sitting while doing it. I have flat feet and running is just so unappealing to me... Row House offers me a great low-impact alternative workout. There is a break in-between rowing for floor work that gets you on your feet but it's followed by more sitting (aka rowing) so it feels easier to do vs standing for an hour in other gym classes. 3. Nice facility, nice staff. Free lockers with their own built-in locks! Free towels! Clean bathroom with two stalls and showers! Nice teachers who are encouraging but not too intense! All of this is good. Long story short- if I, the laziest non-gymer in New York, can learn to love Row House, I'm sure you can too. It's fun, it's straight forward and most importantly you see awesome results in a relatively short time. read more

I'd like to preface this review with the fact that not all rowing workouts are created equal. now that we're clear on that, it should be noted that if you tried one rowing class at a different studio, and didn't like it, you ought to give Row House a shot. The experience is much different than that of the *other* studio (which, for the record, I do like!). The most noticable difference off the bat is the size of the classes. Here you're rowing with an entire crew, literally! the coach will run you through drills and sprints, calling out stroke rates and encouraging you to pace with your classmates and feed off of each other's energy. the floor work in the last couple of classes I've taken has been minimal, which is the reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars (yet). I prefer a little more crosstraining off of the erg so I feel like I'm getting a well-rounded workout, but the sprints and long drills are definitely enough to work up a healthy sweat. add some mats next to the ergs and y'all will be on that A-game! read more

Tried Row house for the first time recently and was highly impressed! EVERYONE is SUPER friendly (including the front desk) and the instructors were very knowledgable. At first I was worried about the workout being all arms but once I took the "Body" class I was very happy with the full body workout that I received. Bethany was an absolute peach! ;) The locker rooms aren't huge but they are very clean and people are usually considerate of moving quickly so that others can clean up. Would definitely recommend to a friend! P.S. If you forget water bottle the flavored water at the front desk is bomb! read more

I don't know about you, but when I leave a gym class I like to be covered in sweat and feeling like I've accomplished something great. Unfortunately, this was not my feeling when I left Row House. The format isn't one that inspires effort, and honestly the instructor looked a bit bored as well. My normal calorie burn is over 300, this left me at around 200. read more

I started coming to Row House back in May 2018 (using Class Pass to try it out) and I loved it and am now a weekly regular !! I had a feeling I would like it because I was looking for a workout that would give me my cardio while adding other elements. My personal routine outside of Row House consists of circuit-type workouts in my small apartment gym so this place definitely gives me that extra intensity that I look for each week! Some highlights: - the staff and instructors are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable (My first class was with Gretchen who was very thorough in explaining proper form and how the class worked) - any questions I asked about post-rowing soreness or form were thoroughly answered - My favorite class is the "Body" class which has 2 non-rowing sections with dumbbells. I love taking these with Bethany who is really energetic and motivating! - A new fav is the "Power" class which I've only taken once but it was the most intense workout (more HIIT circuits breaking up the rowing segments) and I felt so great (and exhausted) afterwards! - The Chelsea location is extremely convenient and the facility (+ outdoor patio) is nice and well-maintained. - You are sent an email workout summary after each class with some stats - really helps you stay motivated to improve! Who would have thought that rowing can make you work! A good experience indeed. The staff at the front desk are friendly & welcoming, my 6:30pm class was instructed by Jenny. She was great, good spirits, informative & helpful with any questions I had. The class was a good welcome back to the fitness world, it's been a good 3 months with out doing any physical activity. At times I deff felt out of breath due to rowing. It deff works out both upper & lower body. I was informed that there are about 3 different kind of classes, I had the chance to do upper body. Before class started we were instructed to take two light & heavy weights.. really workout my arms. The class is a total of 45mins. I say it's similar to a pilates class, there's a lot of pulling & it will work out your LEGS. This location is small, one class at a time. They have showers, bathrooms, lockers, & even a water fountain. Female restrooms provide hair dyers, hair products even spray deodorant. Love that there's also plastic bags provided for your wet clothing! Let me make it clear that this was through a free class not event from yelp. Like that they do not pressure you to buy a membership but do inform you with the different deals they have at the moment. And can I just express that you will get calluses on yours hands in just those 45 mins of pulling. Overall good start to my week, I shall soon return. read more

I started at Row House a little over a month ago, taking classes once or twice a day. This is one of the first exercise classes where I have come out of it feeling even stronger than I went in. I've been able to see my body tone up, and I love watching my splits fall in the summaries I get after class. All of the instructors are great and they've been helping me get into correct form (I'm not a rower, never was before this.) Seriously one of my favorite classes in NYC. read more

I've been going here for a while now and it's generally ok- the instructors are good and it's mostly fine to go at your own pace during the class and just try as best as you can to keep up until you improve. The front desk is very disorganized though- they did a flash sale, told me I got a discounted month of sessions and then waited several hours to call me and tell me never mind. LOL ok. Since that happened (and just in general) I am going to stick with only going through here Fit Reserve (similar to Class Pass)- it's absolutely not worth it to get any kind of membership otherwise. I have some mixed feelings about my workout at Row House... Firstly, let me start by saying that the people itself are great. Super nice, helpful, constantly offering and willing to help get you set up and explain the basics. However, its the other aspects of Row House I wasn't so into. Such as: 1) The facilities at the Chelsea locations are just okay. The row machines and studio are fine, but the locker room and bathroom situation was not. The guys locker room as one bathroom stall, one shower, and one sink, crammed into a tiny and congested area. Don't bank on using these facilities if you're facing any kind of time restraints. 2) The class itself (I took Full Body), in my own humble opinion, was just okay. I think rowing is a great exercise, but I like competition and pushing it to the max. I felt a little restrained by this class in that you're more or less forced to row at the same tempo of the entire class, and it left me wanting at certain points in the exercise. I also had trouble following the instructor (I'm new to rowing classes so I kept trying to look and/or listen to the instructions) because she was blocked by other rowers. While I do admit I had a good sweat and the folks at Row House were very nice, I just don't think this class is for me. But hey, it was worth a shot, and it seemed like everyone else was pretty into it. read more

First time here, trying out a class via classpass with the hubby: and my first thought was that everyone working here must have been high on endorphins because they were so damn friendly! Any nerves or unease about trying a new class, and being out of shape quickly faded away as soon as you get to the front desk because they were so genuinely welcoming -- nothing fake about it. I can tell they are happy to see people come in for a class. We were quickly checked in, had to sign some kind of form, and take a photo. And then we selected which rowing machine we wanted from a sheet of paper. Good sense of humor of the staff as well, because I had to keep checking which machine I reserved, and one of the other instructors asked if I had gone to brunch beforehand. Gave me a good laugh. They have digi-lock lockers in a small hallway between bathrooms, and lockers where you can use your own lock inside the women's bathrooms. Lockers are surprisingly large and deep, and fit my huge tote bag. In spite of being such a small bathroom space, they do have showers. I believe only two of them, and two bathrooms. A double sink with toiletries, tampons, hair dryer, a full sized mirror to check yourself out, and a bench. A lot is squeezed into that small space, and considering classes can be large -- up to 28 people, I imagine the bathrooms to be crammed afterwards. I purposely waited for it to die down a bit. Towels to wipe your sweaty face are provided right before you enter class. A refrigerated case of free Chobani yogurt drinks are also available to refuel after class. They sell their Rowhouse bottled waters. Cool chalkboard wall near the front desk. Soothing and calming gray colors when you walk in. One room with rowing machines. Our instructor was Scott for the Full Body class, and he was very energetic and encouraging, taking the time to find out who were first timers, and explaining how the machines and numbers worked. As more people came in, he double checked if there were any first timers and had no problem repeating himself, or assisting people who specifically asked for help. During the class, he would walk around, check on everyone. He would reiterate proper form, explaining it's not about busting your arms, but keeping one fluid motion, where the bulk of your strength, power, and force comes from the legs when you push back, and you use that momentum to pull. I felt the most exertion from my thighs and lower abdomen, and forearms. For the most part, a lot of loud music, dark, but I kind of like that since you can go nuts rowing your heart out, looking sweaty, red faced, and gasping for breath without being illuminated by some bright white light. That's just a personal preference though. The class is only 45 minutes, but it went quickly because he would mix intervals/HIIT with moderate rowing speed, and in between there were some squats, lunges, ab work, etc. Space is on a one floor walk up, which sucks when you're done with class and your legs feel like jelly. This is when you grip the railing, or cling to the wall, for dear life, as I did. But that's how you know you got a great workout. Luckily, close to food places if you need to eat back all your calories, OR just a few steps from the train station. By the next day, it hurt to laugh, or get out of bed. I would roll sideways to get off the bed, or ask my husband to kick me off. The consequences of a hearty workout. Will be back on a regular basis and can't wait! Good location and I actually like that you have to walk up that long staircase to get to the second floor. The guys in the front are always happy and friendly. The instructors (I've taken 3 classes) are all pretty good and motivating. I've call the office a few times with some inquiries and the staff have always been helpful and efficient. No complaints! The only thing is that the location is not that accessible to me and the bathroom is a little small. Def a semi-regular here. Oh and I heard Jason Mars went to a class here! read more

I bought a Gilt City voucher for five rowing classes. Quite possibly my favorite and useful purchase I've made from Gilt. The staff, at this location, are awesome...especially Ben. I've only spoken to him by phone but he was always very understanding and helpful. Extending my expiration date on my voucher and cancelling my classes as early cancellation because I'd forget my clothes, or when my BFF gave birth. I've taken Matt's full body here. I feel like his class is way too advanced for me. I could barely do any of his floor workouts. I like his laid back attitude though. Kelsey's full body class on Saturday's are also great. She came around to everyone to fix their postures and for her floor work, she gave a lot of other options if we couldn't do the original way she asked us to. I walked out of Row House thinking I would not be able to move the next day. This was my first time rowing and the instructor was great. Took a lot of time to help me correct my form before getting into the exercises. And once we started the exercises, my glutes were screaming and crying for mercy. We only took one break for mat work, but the exercises were tough. I hear some instructors will take more than one mat break. However, I wasn't actually that sore the next day. From the hype (and from how I actually felt in class) I would have expected every part of my body to be aching, but that wasn't the case. I still definitely want to go back though. The studio (second floor) is really nice and sleek. The lockers in the lobby are self-locking, but if you want to use the lockers in the ladies' room, you have to bring your own lock. There are 2 showers that I didn't use, but I peeked in and saw shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. There's a hair dryer and hair ties, cotton balls, etc provided as well. The lobby also has a water station, but if you forget to bring a bottle, it's pretty $$ to buy one ($3). read more

Yessssss! Thank you Row House! Next to the wheel being invented, Row House Chelsea is an amazing idea. Downtown residents can now have Row House without traveling all the way to Columbus Circle. At the moment, the location is brand new so there's still a little space renovation in the works. The lockers are conveniently located in the lounge and the rowing class is very nice. Onto the workout. My friend and I took the 6pm Full Body class with Debra Strougo and loved it. She definitely gives a great workout with rowing intervals that really works out the back muscles. The burn was amazing and gave me a good sweat. Don't be scared to sit in the front. Sitting in the front actually helps you pace with the instructor for good form and timing. I will definitely take Debra Strougo's class again and recommend Row House Chelsea to Beginners and advanced level rowers alike. read more
