Not only was the location elite but the routines and fact that we were delicately pushed to exceed our limits. I felt catered to and supported from instruction to the final outdoor run. Some of the equipment & workout was new to me & I love being wow'd by new things that elevate me. In later receiving emails from them I learned they host indoor & outdoor community scrimmages - super cool! I def will be trying one in the spring. It has an appeal of it being a solid place to build your network or host groups. Did I mention the founder is so hot? Very proud of him bringing this quality to the area. So INTENSE!! Great experience that I highly recommend. The classes were a bit expensive for 2 people it was $97. The classes last 60 minutes each. They're drill style so they basically train you like a pro athlete but in different levels. We did the intermediate class with Zack. He KILLED IT!!! He was extremely motivating and great with remembering names. If you want something that will make you feel the burn in a good way and show you results I highly highly recommend. My friend has been going here for years and dragged me along. I'd definitely do it again. They also you to stop and take breaks, but you feel motivated to keep going because it's drill style. There's someone behind you and in front of you. You get out into teams and everyone is super nice and encouraging. There's a warm up area, there are showers, there's also an ice bath tub area and the women's locker room. There's a turd field which is where you workout (it's indoors). They have beverages for purchase, snacks, and athletic wear for the brand. They partner with tons of brands including Lululemon. If walking into this gym isn't intimidating enough, the dramatic, reality competition show music a la Survivor playing in the low lit waiting area is more than enough to heighten the fear factor (wow these references are aging me). If there's a class taking place ahead of yours, you'll hear the groans of pain and exhaustion coming from class-goers while the instructor shouts at them to get in formation, which will only increase your anxiety about going in. At Tone House, no one goes easy on you. The warm up alone will leave you gasping for air, with multiple sets of burpees, high knees, leaps, and jumping across the turf and little rest in between rounds. Throughout class you'll do things like drag a heavy sled across the turf, use val slides, and do this horrible move called a gallup, which will make you want to call it quits not even mid-way through the class. I know I make it sound like pure torture, which it is, but if you're someone who chases endorphin highs, this is a class that will deliver it to you as soon as it's over. There is an encouraging, team spirit environment where your teammates clap and cheer you on to get to the finish line. Everyone in that room, no matter their fitness level, finds the workout challenging, so they understand your struggle. You'll feel incredibly accomplished at the end, for overcoming some fears, and for tackling what used to seem insurmountable. Would recommend for anyone looking to challenge themselves. read more

Everybody was super friendly and encouraging, pushing you to succeed, maybe a bit too much. It is NOT beginner friendly. The trainer kept encouraging me to lift/pull at whatever weight they have on and seemed confused and was pretty reluctant in lowering the weights for me. This is a safety issue. There was no time to rest at all, my body was not feeling good, there was no time to catch your breath cause you're onto the next exercise right away. Also the showers in the women's locker room is a bit odd. It is right in front of the hallways, where everybody passes through. Hooks are outside so you have to crack open the door to get your towel, no hooks inside so you have come out in your towel and hope no men pass by cause they have full view. read more

Friendly staff, upbeat trainers, dim room, clean space, workouts in teams but this place is no joke, they definitely offer the hardest cardio classes in NYC. The warmup is pretty much considered as one of the hardest full workouts in itself. The warmups are fast paced, which consist of multiple rounds of different types of hurdles: jumping over hurdles, running over hurdles, burpees over hurdles, etc., and you'll feel compelled to keep up with the person in front of and behind you. So definitely wear tight and comfortable running shoes for this as most accidents tend to happen at this phase that targets the ankle, especially without a "real" warmup. The actual workouts are broken down into teams and it's like a speed race, consisting of multiple rounds of pushups across the room using valslides, bear crawls, frog jumps, rowings, sprints, burpees, etc. along with pushing and pulling of the sleds. The trainers don't pay much attention to form so you pretty much have to have a good idea of how it's done properly at a high speed. This place is equipped with keyless lockers, showers and towels, however they don't have unlimited monthly membership, and it's $45 per class depending on the package. read more

My friend and I were visiting NYC for 4 days and the theme of our trip was "Fitness and Food". One of the first spots that we tried was Tone House. We had heard that it was one of the hardest workouts in NYC and our other friend recommended it as a kick-ass workout. We thought, why not?! The place is pretty easy to get to and navigate. Their studio is located in the basement, lots of signs that point you in the right direction. Showers, locker rooms, bathrooms and facilities that would make this place and easy place to go to before or after work. I could totally see myself going here before work if I lived in NYC. I've done crossfit and other intense workouts but never have I experienced what I experienced at Tone House. Super intimidating as we took the "TH 101: Conditioning" class which was supposed to be more difficult than the average class. Our coach was Adrian and he was awesome. The warm-up was HARD, Iots of running, sprinting over hurtles and burpees. I was wiped even after the warm-up. Intense and energetic music plays as the coach shouted out drills, tons of pressure to do well and go fast because others are waiting and/or watching. The coach worked us all to the bone and there were several times that I wanted to just walk out or vomit, or both. As much as I wanted to quit, the couch was super reassuring and positive, pushing me to my edge and motivating me to do my best. I had never felt so exhausted yet so inspired all at the same time. At the end of the workout, we had to do our warm-up again. Yes, I kid you not! When that was done, we circled around and did a final drill with the coach giving us instructions and directions. Listen....this place is dangerous. I've been an athlete my whole life, and this was absolutely an unsafe environment. I am shocked at how many great reviews there are. Okay. The "warmup" is not a warmup. So if you DO decide to go despite all the warnings, you should get there early so you can stretch properly and get yourself warmed up before they have you go from 0-100 within the first few seconds of class. The instructor was way more concerned with barking at folks to be faster so they could beat the teammates we were pitted against instead of looking at form, or letting ppl know they could go at their own pace or do modifications if necessary. I left a little over halfway thru the class. Why? Bc they had us sprinting over hurtles, in the DARK!! That was my imma head out moment and I laughed my way into the locker room. I wish I had read the reviews before I signed up for a class, but I was enticed in bc I'm a sucker for a hard workout and good marketing. It's no wonder several people have reported major injuries at this place, one of which I tried to find recently (so I could show my friend and convince them not to go) and it's....gone??? Maybe it's because I'm coming from CrossFit, or maybe I just don't get it. This isn't the way to "tone," making me baffled by the name. I took a few TH classes to give it a chance, and I just couldn't do it anymore. I left each class disappointed for so many reasons. 1- Each class is the same. For the first 45 minutes, you do the same thing, which is sprinting, jumping over hurdles, running over hurdles, and running with valslides. They're just recycling the same moves over and over again. It gets boring, and it shows me that they don't have a set program with goals in mind. How many times are you going to have us slide back and forth with the valslides? This is beyond boring and not very stimulating. They're just shuffling you around with random exercises that do not do anything. 2- Too much cardio. The majority of the class is cardio. There's no resistance or weights training. YOU CAN'T TONE WITHOUT RESISTANCE! 3- All the cardio is stuff you can do on your own. Running? Sprinting? Jumping over hurdles? Burpees? How is this worth this much money? 4- Each class ends with the coach yelling out all these moves really quickly and you doing them all in a circle, i.e. squat! crunch! hustle to the left! hustle to the right! You end up doing like one or two reps of each. Again, not enough to make any impact on your body. It's about quantity over quality with TH, and it shows with this last exercise they have you do. They just want you to break a sweat so you feel like you worked out, but it's not a quality workout. Instead, they should have you do sets of however many reps of each move, so that it actually makes a difference. 5- The loud creepy music playing every time you enter a class. What's up with that? So cheesy. 6- I spoke to some coaches after class, and they told me they don't even take these classes themselves. They're all toned and in great shape, so that's misleading to the masses, but it makes sense now. They're getting toned elsewhere! 7- Whether you're there for a month or years, you're doing the exact same workout as one another. How does that make sense? How do they track progress? At how quickly you jump over hurdles? A beginner and a more advanced person shouldn't be doing the exact same workout. 8- This is the furthest thing from the "hardest workout in NYC." I did not ever feel sore afterwards or the next day. I didn't feel my muscles getting worked out. I just felt like I was moving around. That title is completely nonsensical, as is ToneHouse. read more

I rarely write reviews online, but I thought Id warn others about this place. As many others have seemed to post, this place is dangerous. This is not coming from someone who is a mediocre athlete or who is out of shape and decided to go all out randomly in one workout and injure myself. To give context, I can squat about 450 lbs, deadlift about 530 lbs, can do about 30 pull ups and can run a sub 6 min mile. I am in better shape than about 95 percent of the general population if I had to guess. I went to this place a couple of weeks ago and injured my hip pretty badly. I have not been able to squat or do any squat like movements since and my hip hurts literally all of the time. It is non stop pain that I feel laying down, walking, running etc. I hope its just a muscle strain, but it could be a tear that requires surgery. Regardless, it has reached the point that this is not a sore muscle anymore and is an injury that Ill have to deal with for god knows how long. The reason this place is dangerous is that it takes average people and puts them through a plyometric/sprint workout for a very long duration. Plyometric and explosive work is designed to be done for very short periods of time, followed by long rest periods. They are not designed to be done for an hour straight. Its a recipe for injury. Even elite athletes should not be doing the workout that I went through. Half the exercises were pointless with no upside besides a huge injury risk. They had us do "jumping situps," which is quite possibly the dumbest exercise that Ive ever done in my life. This was coupled with regular situps for 5-10 minutes straight. Your hips and low back are not designed to do exercises like that for long duration. Situps are already seen as a somewhat dangerous and suboptimal exercise to be doing. Why in the world would you decided to make it "jumping?" Its baffling. This was coupled with the sprint work that needs to be eased into for the vast majority of people who take this class. Unless you are actively doing plyometric training or sprinting in day to day life, your body will not be ready for this type of long workout that is filled almost entirely of explosive movements. Even if you do train explosively, the exercise selection was so bad that even if you do train this way, youd still risk a severe injury. Overall, will never be stepping foot inside this place again. Stick to CrossFit, orange-theory, regular big box gyms, powerlifting gyms... literally anywhere else besides this place read more

I have not experienced a workout this hard since my competitive figure skating days almost a decade ago. I read all the reviews and heard from friends that this is truly the hardest workout in NYC and knew I needed to give it a go. Luckily, I had another masochistic friend who wanted to try it out w me and we ended up signing up for a 6am class this morning. I was intimidated from the start as one by one, the fittest clientele came filing in; it was clear that no one was a beginner. The studio has an interesting layout, but the front desk attendant was great at explaining to me in detail where everything was. The women's locker room even has an ice bath, something I definitely want to make use of in the future. After warming up a bit in their lounge area (full of foam rollers, other things to help you stretch and warm up), we made our way into the studio for the workout. The warmup is a series of runs, jumps, and burpees over and in between hurdles with sprints in between. As someone who is 5' tall, this was especially difficult as the hurdles are higher for me relative to others, and I had to run very quickly w my short legs so as to not hold up the line of people behind me. While this was tough, I appreciated the challenge, and was motivated the whole time by our trainer. The rest of the workout was seriously so difficult, and my arms reached true fatigue halfway through. Before I knew it however, the workout was done, and we were on our way out. I could barely hold my arms up to wash my hair afterwards, but I missed the feeling of being truly fatigued, and I loved the workout overall. You really do feel like a champ while doing these crazy exercises with all the others, and I can only imagine the results I would get w regularly going. I definitely want to begin incorporating this class into my workout regimen at least once a week, but I'll see how I feel when I wake up tomorrow. read more

4.9 stars/5 on Classpass, and close to my hotel (out of towner) so I signed up for it not knowing what to expect. If I had looked it up on Yelp I most likely would not have gone LOL! I like that they have showers and an area to get ready for work. They also have lockers both at the stretching area and in changing rooms. When I first showed up I was nervous because they had music playing in the background and dim lights that made it feel like I was in the Hunger Games and was going to have to battle it out with people to save my life. The warm up was all cardio which was tough in itself and I was ok with the, "go go go" mentality. The weights afterwards though I would not recommend the "go go go" mentality as I completely agree with the other reviewer - the pace did not allow me to provide myself with correct form or even good form. Instead it was too fast for me to keep up with so I felt that my effort at that point was at 80%. I really liked the weightlifting portions (the rope tied to your body, pulling the ropes with the weights, etc.). I suck at cardio but was glad they did it in the beginning versus the end. I think they need to slow down the commands for the weighlifting part. The cardio pace was perfect. I'd definitely come back. I personally was not sore after since I am a frequent gym goer, but it made me realize that my cardio was sorely lacking and it made me want to challenge myself moving forward for the next classes I do. read more

Wow - I thought I was in decent shape until I stepped foot into this place. I've taken a lot of HIIT classes (Switch, Fhitting Room, Orange Theory, Title, etc). But this is on another level, and truly the most challenging workout I've ever done. I was probably swearing under my breath during the entire hour, between the intense amount of burpees, gallops and sled pushes. That said, this is also one of the best and motivating classes I've ever taken. The coaches I've had so far are Adrian and Zack, who were both incredibly helpful and encouraging during the whole time, and the class has a very supportive vibe (everyone cheers everyone on). The class is priced at $45/class which is steep, but it's one of the few NYC fitness classes that is well worth the price. I've taken this a few times now - and the soreness I felt for the next few days was incomparable. The endorphin rush you'll get after this class you'll feel like you survived death) makes it so, so worth it! read more

Though after my initial review, management noted they would "carefully review this incident" , I never heard from them and from my understanding nothing had changed regarding practices. As an avid Classpass user, this remains my favorite workout studio in NYC (decided to buy a package eventually because the Classpass spots are limited). This isn't like any other HIIT / bootcamp class where you rotate through circuits and stand in one spot while doing exercises. I'm sure you have read about the warmup, which is a bit on the intense side. You feel pressured to keep up with the person in front of you, but you can choose whether to be in the front or back depending on your fitness level. After the warmup, there is usually speed work, which is where you split up into groups of 4 and do any mixture of sprints, gallops, bear crawls, etc. The rest of the programming depends on which day of the week it is. Conditioning Day is all speed work / cardio. It's the hardest day but also I feel like the day where you get your money's worth because this is what TH is best at. If it's your first time taking class, I recommend Total Body Day because you try a bit of everything. Some examples of exercises include rowers, assault bikes, sled pull/pushes, running with your hands on gliders (absolutely hate these). The class ends with a reactionary drill that's kind of like a Simon Says. What I love about these classes: + Drastically improved my fitness levels + The movement patterns practiced in class are applicable to actual sports + It's the only studio in NYC that trains speed & explosiveness + Who doesn't enjoy pushing a heavy ass sled? + The coaches and members are very supportive and try to make it fun + You feel like you're working in a team + They play that ratchet music Not to say that the other fitness studios in NYC aren't good (still love Fhitting Room for working on kettlebell techniques), but this is a valuable addition to any fitness repertoire. read more

I thought I've done some terrible-amazing workouts, but then there's Tone House. When I took my first few steps on the fake grass turf, I thought to myself, "Yeah, it's gonna be a light workout with such a light turf." Man, if only I could take back those thoughts. All of it. It was when I saw Zack's buff triceps and Emily's quick transitions around difficult moves that I realized that this class was going to be gruesome and the next hour would feel like hours. I hated the the burpees and I hated the lateral jumps since I have a bad shoulder and a pretty messed up ankle (I'm aware that I'm slowly destroying my body altogether). The TRX workout was actually one of my favorites. I learned to do a handstand and one-legged burpees, which weren't bad. The TRX always works wonders if you want to learn how to balance. However, pushing the sleds that swept me off my feet--literally, when my tightly-laced sneakers slipped off--wasn't even the worst of it for me. The two rounds of sprints and bear crawls (this one in particular) towards the end of the workout had me on the floor, pleading for this class to end already. This TH101 class--their most basic class--was tough but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. read more

Best workout in NYC hands down. Who's house? ToneHouse! This class is HIIT training at its finest. This fast paced class is not for everyone. It's very physically involved. The class is inspired by football training camp. You will be asked to perform a variety of body weight movements (like drop downs, gallops, bear crawls, etc). Depending on the day, you may be asked to do sled work, rowing, and / or bungee cord. They offer a Rookie Pass for people just starting out. It's $45 for two classes at the "101 level" which is basically a slower version of the class to learn the moves. I would recommend this to newcomers. Otherwise depending on the package you buy. A class my cost $45. Expensive for NYC Yet, I'd still rate this as 5/5 stars. If I want great food I expect to pay a certain amount, same with entertainment. Fitness is no different. Many studios will offer all the bells and whistles (smoothies, clothing, etc) but when you boil down to it, the workout doesn't do anything for you. I've attended classes run by Solomon and Alonzo and have absolutely loved the workouts I had. I consider myself someone whose relatively in shape and have taken a variety of classes across the city, but I think Tone House is far and none the hardest workout I've ever taken. I think it's pretty doable, but extremely hard nonetheless. I've taken classes focused on both the lower body and upper body, and they're both extremely challenging. The reviews about the warmup being killer are completely accurate. You do the same warm up every time, consisting of variations of sprints, jumps, burpees, etc., and it nearly knocks the life out of you. If you hate cardio like I do, this may be the hardest part of the workout. There are various points of the workout where you're able to catch your breath luckily; I've also seen people step out/step aside for parts of the workout, and I appreciate that the coaches let them be. I love how supportive the coaches and other class members are. They are very accommodating of new people and beginnings. I will say, limited corrections on form are given, so you kind of have to have a general idea of good workout form. The facility itself is very spacious and clean. It can be a little hard to navigate once you're inside, but there's signs to help out. The red lighting really adds to the focus/intensity of the workout lol. There's also cold baths in the locker room for after your workout if that's your thing. The only thing that I think Tone House can improve on is offering towels upstairs. $45 for a single class is pretty steep, but I think it's honestly well worth it. It's NY, you'll manage to hopefully get past the sticker shock. They do offer a 2 for 1 (2 for $45) intro package for beginners. Hands down the hardest thing I have done on class pass to date. I walked in and my instructor asked what I knew about the studio. Ummmmm k. Me: "Duhhh, nothing really. It was on classpass and it was close. And I didn't feel like taking yoga today so here I am" Her: "Be prepared to work really hard. The description on classpass does not do us justice" Me: "So should I not have drank last night?" Her: "Probably a bad decision" Me: "Whatever, I will be fine I take bootcamp classes all the time" ......AND 10 minutes later your boy is laying here in a pool of sweat on the floor convinced imminent death is about to occur. Breath leaving body, tears rolling down cheek, heart stopping. Tone House made me their bitch during the warmup...yes the damn warmup. We haven't even done the workout yet. I wanted to leave. The damn instructor would let me. I hate bear crawls, and the leap frog thing we were doing, the other crawls sucked too, and rope pulls were miserable, and after like 100 burpees I wanted to push the instructor out the window. My body hated me. But all in all best/hardest workout I have ever done and really want to go back soon. If you can survive the warmup you will be fine. This is a very physical and mental class. Do this a lot before joing the marines / army / navy / fbi / secret service and you will be fine. This has got to be the hardest workout in NYC. In fact, it's like the hardest workout ever! I just died at the Tone House. Definitely be prepared to do a RELAY-yes a relay- of suicide runs, gallop runs, bear crawls, and football drills, and much more stuff I wasn't able to finish! This workout is definitely not for the faint of heart. Holy cow! I think I blacked out 3 times in 25 minutes. No Soul Cycle, Fhitting Room, Barry's bootcamp, or any HIIT class will ever prepare you for this, and I've been to all the other gyms numerous times! This workout is in a class of its own. It's meant for pure athletic conditioning, and you have to grit through the pain. My lungs still hurts from the workout. You might want to try this out if you're looking for a challenging workout. The rest of the class is super supportive and nice, but it was just too much for me. P.s. They play some superhero music beforehand. Literally the hardest workout of my freaking life!!! I'm a ClassPass member and have my standard list of places that I frequent. I decided to try something new and take a core focus class at Tone House. I waited until this morning - aka the day of class - to check out the yelp reviews. I immediately got nervous and righty so. The workout is crazy with zero recovery time between circuits. Talk about endurance. It's true that the warm up is the hardest part but the gallops are as well. The instructors - there were 2 in this mornings 10am class - are super encouraging as was everyone in the class. I consider myself to be in great shape but was the last to finish every exercise. I didn't feel bad because this was my first time there and everyone was super supportive. I'm still coughing up my lungs and am not 100% sure that I'll be back. Let's see how I feel later today and tomorrow :-) The studio : 1 large room; cubbies to hold personal belongings; 1 unisex bathroom; no locker rooms or showers. read more

As someone else mentioned in their comments, definitely not for the faint of heart. The workout at Tone House is hard. Other than it was highly reviewed, I had no idea what the class was about. I literally texted my friend "I'm scared." If there wasn't a cancellation fee, I really think I would have just bailed. I evenly very stupidly asked the front desk guy, I heard this class is really hard, will I be okay? He gave me a "girl, ima try not to judge you kinda look" but he told me I am always free to take a time out on the side or tell the instructor if I am hurting. As soon as you enter the studio, you hear this intense music that sounds like a John Williams score for the darkest parts of a Star Wars movie or what discovering alien life on Mars would feel like. There's a red lighting to the place so adds to the intensity. The instructor is very fit. His bicep is bigger than my thigh haha, wow. But very friendly and encouraging. As others has mentioned, this class is very team spirit oriented and everyone encourages each other, which I liked a lot. There was a lot of running, jumping, sprinting, squatting, pulling, resistance banding, galloping. Very total body and a lot of "ing" verbs. The floor is covered in AstroTurf so it's easy on the joints, but definitely not easy on the hands, so wear gloves if you plan to be a frequent. Highly recommend this workout. I'm writing about Tone house as I recover from my 7am TH101 class. I'm only in new york for a few days and a friend recommended this workout with the catch phrase "harder than Barry's." I'm sure you're all wondering: well is it? I think comparing this workout to Barry's is like comparing apples to oranges, they're very different and either one can be harder than the other depending on how hard you push yourself. I will say though that this workout is more fun and they've achieved a more team-like feel than Barry's and it's very motivating to workout with a team. Is it worth it? This workout is definitely on the higher end, priced at $40 a class without discounts. luckily, there's a newbie special of 2-for-1 but if you're looking for a routine workout, you're out of luck there. I think this question differs for every individual - that all varies based on everyone's disposable income. I wouldn't save up or make myself feel uncomfortable to come workout here, but that being said it's a luxury and it does make an normally dry and boring HIIT workout seem doable and fun. You probably can do the same exercises on your own, but let's be real here you're not going to. There was a 20% chance I was going to make this 7:15am class this morning, but I'm so glad I did! It's a very welcoming class and the coaches are tough but in a very supportive way. The one thing that is on the negative side though is the fact that they don't correct form at all and the weights they provide are probably too heavy for the average person so unless you know what you're doing be very very careful. I wouldn't come here if you're not already working out regularly. I do feel it's very easy to get injured especially when the weights are so heavy. Overall, I really liked working out at Tone House and it'll definitely be on my agenda the next time I'm back in New York! Please open a studio in San Francisco! =) read more

Decided to give them another try and this place is totally dangerous for not providing an adequate warm up and for not paying attention to form. I sprained my ankle today during warm up, which as anyone will tell you, is not a real warm up but the actual exercise. A trainer helped me get downstairs to the ice bath but never returned to check on me. I am now in a cast and crutches and spoke with a physical trainer who works at another studio, who broke an ankle at tonehouse also during warmups. They don't care about your form or health and I wouldn't recommend it. I don't live in NYC anymore, but I used to... and I've lived in some other major cities like SF, DC, and Dallas where I've consistently worked out, so I do want to confirm that I think Tone House IS one of the hardest workouts out there. It really is very similar to crossfit minus all of the barbells. (Don't worry, you'll be pushing sleds with weights and, sometimes, an instructor, sitting on top of it.) I took about five Tone House classes in total, and it did not get any easier each time. Each instructor has their own style, and the only thing you should expect to be the same is the warmup (which will also leave you out of breath!). Overall, if you want to see results and feel strong and accomplished, then take a class! As long as you have a "can do" attitude, you would be surprised at how much you can push yourself... I will say, though, that it's also true that you do need to be at a certain fitness level to keep up with the class. If you don't regularly do cardio, HIIT, strength training, or circuit training, this workout will be really hard to get through. Also, it's always the most fun when you take a class with a friend or two... that feeling of having suffered through a class together can really make you bond! I think my favorite instructor was Greg (at the UES location) because he's hilarious and he makes the suffering a little less miserable by making you laugh. read more

I've been using ClassPass pretty much since they started and have tried multiple classes and many cities as I travel frequently. On a recent trip to New York I decided to give townhouse a try since all the other reviews said that it was extremely challenging. As a long time athlete, I ran track and cross-country in high school and college... I can honestly say this is one of the hardest workouts I've ever done. James was amazing and positive, and even though I wanted to throw up the entire time, he managed to keep it super upbeat and I really enjoyed the camaraderie and team spirit. After returning home to Austin three days later. I'm still sore. I wish there were something like this and other cities. Looking forward to my next trip to NYC, hoping I can work up the courage to venture back! Thank you James for pushing me! read more

Tone House is THE workout spot for athletes and masochists. It is one of the only gyms (that I'm aware of) that offers a satisfying experience for those who are in supreme physical conditioning, or those that love to hurt. I'm pretty sure in all the classes I've taken there's been at least one person who's either walked out of the class, or started throwing up. A+ experience For real though, Tone House offers something that other gyms (especially in NYC) can't; a workout that truly pushes you to your limit. I'll list out the pros & cons: + Hardest gym class in NYC, without a doubt. For those looking for a true challenge, you've come to the right spot + 2 trainers per class, which most gyms (I'm looking at you Barry's) doesn't offer. This makes the class a more technical and safer experience in my e-pinion. + Cool studio & vibes. You feel like you're taking a trendy NYC gym class. The only "con" is the pricing is a little steep in my opinion for classes. Plus the package specials expire much more quickly than other studios, which I'm not a fan of. All around though, Tone House is a 5 star class, and has everything nailed down. Highly recommend for those that are up & looking for the challenge. read more

It's taken me a long time to gain the courage to finally write this. I know you know how I really feel. You see me flush red. I sweat, I stutter, my heart skips 8 beats at once. I've dated many gyms before you. Equinox made me feel like a pampered princess. Crunch was practical and reliable -- my parents liked him. But you, Tone House, you're the one I'm crazy about. The one I go home and dream about. I toss and turn in bed. I dream about doing a low sled push across the turf with 5 bags. My heart aches for you -- but more than that? Every muscle in my body aches for days after I see you. 30 dates later and I still get sickeningly nervous the minute I walk in. Sometimes I hate you. You make me feel weak, and empty, and you push me to drink a ton. Of water. But most of the time I hate you because I know the truth -- that I love you and I love what you make me. I am a better person having known you, because I know what the limits of my body and mind are. And I have visible obliques now. WHAT! Never thought that would happen for me. You're beautiful. Your locker rooms are clean and full of great products. You have foam rollers and ice tubs and toys galore. You're so kind. I've met the best people through you. My only complaint is that my FAVORITE -- Coach Callie -- is now gone forever to the upper east side location. Luckily all other coaches are still amazing. Thank you for the gallops and the pain and the impossible TRX exercises. Thank you for introducing me to the medieval torture devices known as valslides. Thanks for making my quads quiver. Workout itself is good and the coaches are great. However I recommend you NEVER buy a class pack directly from the studio because of their unscrupulous expiration policies. Use more flexible platforms like Classpass. Like many have said, this is an intense workout and shouldn't be attempted if you're physically comprised in any way. Even at my healthiest I could only come once a week. I normally use Classpass (which is cheaper) but purchased a 5-pack for $185 to support the studio. HUGE MISTAKE. I got unexpectedly injured skiing and emailed asked for an extension. TH requested a physician letter, which I provided, twice. Each time it was not detailed enough for them to extend the classes. Instead I've been charged a $25 monthly extension fee three times now if I want to ever use these classes. Their reason for not accepting my dr's letter is it's not detailed enough and it wasn't given at the time of injury. First of all, my dr is only going to put so much in there due to privacy, and I've already hassled her twice. I'm not giving you my medical history. Second, if I'm injured to the point I needed to see a doctor, my class expiration date isn't top of mind. TH might give you an extra day or two, but basically they find any reason to not extend ur classes and charge you the fee. No matter how small the class pack, it's unlikely you could use it within the short time given unless you have all the time in the world and are sure you'll never be injured, ever. It's a lose-lose for the customer. I still recommend the workout, just don't buy it from the studio. read more

If you consider yourself a fitness enthusiast with a bit of a masochistic streak, then Tone House will become your new home. Seriously - it's a mecca for people who enjoy training as a TEAM with the most supportive go-getters in life. Despite feeling nervous before every class starts, I always leave inspired and energized to tackle any challenge after witnessing such hard work and positivity from my classmates. What makes Tone House the most unique fitness studio in New York City (and dare I say the entire country) is that the program cultivates a deep sense of humility. You're not supposed to feel competent. You're not supposed to take it easy. You're not supposed to leave without feeling that you gave it your all. I've been going almost every week for the past few months. Not once was I disappointed. The trainers always change up the workout routine to keep you on your feet - the only constants are the warm up and the circle drill. Be patient and love yourself because no one can help you get through this class besides YOU. TL;DR - If you crave challenge, camaraderie, and clarity then you need to join the Tone House community. Tone House is most frequently touted as the hardest workout in New York. Due to this, I was curious to try, and came for my first class a year ago. It was really challenging, and I was so scarred from my first experience that I didn't come back for another year. With a year's break in between my first and second class, the class was still challenging, but not as hard as the first time. This time, I came on the core day. This workout followed the regular Tone House format of warmups consisting of 3 rounds of jumping over the hurdles, another 3 rounds of burpees over the hurdles, and another similar 3 rounds over the hurdles, before going into the actual workout. After the warmup, we did ab wheels on the ab dolly - I had never seen this contraption before, and found it enjoyable, but also very difficult to get the motions right as a first time user. Alonzo went around the class checking on us, and encouraging us as we worked. We then did a couple rounds of sprints the length of the room, bear crawls, and a few more rounds of hurdle things, before partnering and going on the bikes. While we were on the bikes, the person who was not working was just standing and waiting for their partner to finish, so I think it would have been beneficial if we were given instruction to do some sort of exercise instead of just standing and waiting. Last part of the exercise was the quick reaction, in which the instructor called out moves which we had to carry out quickly. The instructors also promote a good sense of teamwork among attendees, which is different to other studios of this kind. I found the workout slightly easier on this second visit, but also comparable to other challenging workouts in the city. Would recommend for anyone looking for a challenging cardio-focused bootcamp. Tried tonehouse during COVID at the East river park. Great workout, even the intermediate level was very tough. Very reminiscent of sport practices growing up. Compared to other classes in nyc this has a more team feel vs. everyone just being in their own bubble which I liked. I can't speak for their normal classes at their studio but I enjoyed this one. I definitely would say it's a great addition to a regimen for someone already in great shape/no injuries not someone that works out occasionally. read more

Whenever I'm in NYC, I always make it a long to stop at Tone House at least once, if not twice. I know that when I go to Tone House, the following will occur in this exact order. - the first five minutes before class: So much anticipation. It's almost like jumping off the high dive before you even climb up the ladder. You feel like a beast even though you haven't done anything yet. - after the first warmup sprint: Why did I choose to do this? - after the warmup exercises: I'm dying! I can feel my lungs burning. And class is not even close to being over. - rest of the class: one big blur... oOo look we get to use the TRX, the harnesses, and other fancy equipment. Wait, they want us to do quick feet, drop, pushup, and repeat? - stretching: ah, the best part. - after class: so glad I got that workout in! So why do I inflict this self-torture on myself? Because I know that this one hour of torture will make me feel like a champion for the rest of the week knowing that I survived the hardest workout class that I've ever tried. Believe me, I've checked out Barry's Bootcamp and crossfit, and while you can't go wrong with any workout, I know that with Tone House, I'm guaranteed the most effective and efficient workout and that I'll always feel like my ass got kicked multiple times. PS - All of the coaches are ridiculously fit and super supportive. For this one hour, the class is a team, and whether you're first or last in the races, your coaches will be cheering you on until you cross the finish line. PPS - Regardless of how fit you are, if you really want to see what you're made of, do Tone House. You might surprise yourself and find out that you're made of stronger stuff than you realize. PPSS - Make sure to get there at least 5 minutes early. You don't want to miss class! read more
