No one ever honestly disclosed they were going over budget.
The original quote was $320,000 -- fully covered by my wife's inheritance. In the final two months, we asked in writing for a cost-to-complete figure and were told $146,000. We were then billed roughly double that, with no change in scope, no warning, nothing in writing, no permission. When we pushed back, their client sued us for $120,000 more.
