However, after speaking with Jen we felt confident that Kawa Farms was the right choice. Unfortunately, we are disappointed in the end result. Overall, we feel like we lost 6 weeks with our puppy for minimal training. We were very clear with Jen about our expectations on multiple occasions. We asked that our 11 week old puppy not jump, learn general commands such as sit, stay, down and walking with a lead. We also asked that she be potty trained. We were told by Jen that this wouldn't be a problem. She informed us that our puppy would be living in the house with her due to her young age. We later learned that she only lived in the house for a short period of time and was then moved to the boarding kennels. We quickly realized that training was not going as planned. After 2 weeks at Kawa Farms our puppy had not learned one command. We were told by Jen that it was our puppy's fault and that she must have experienced some sort of trauma which is not the case. She offered to keep her for 2 additional weeks at no charge. We trusted in her process and agreed to the extended training. When our puppy completed the 6 weeks of training she could sit and come on command (only for a treat and using a clicker) and would sometimes lay down on a soft surface only. This is obviously not what we expected for the time and money spent. We feel like the failed attempts to train our puppy were always blamed on the puppy. Now that we have her at home we disagree with that assessment. She is very trainable and we have been able to teach her a lot. Jen informed us that she would follow up with us in 2 weeks at our home. We never heard from her. We sent her an email regarding our disappointment and received no response. Overall, we feel our puppy would have learned more in a general puppy class.

As we drive there, he gets very excited to go and runs in the door every time! Every staff member greets your dog like he/she is their own. They don't judge or balk at owners who want to bring in blankets or pillows etc to make their boarded dog feel "at home" & safe (which is extra important for those rescue dogs or anxiety ridden dogs). He is a current military man and an ex-law enforcement officer who has traveled to several countries to study and improve his dog training techniques. I have met many dog trainers both in person and through the internet, but Josh has an honest and straightforward approach that really appeals to me! Next is the facility. It is a modern, free-standing building that was designed and constructed for the specific purpose of boarding and training dogs. It has plenty of lighting, both natural and artificial, huge environmental heating and cooling equipment, and large kennels with ample space to house his dogs as well as a system of drains that make it easy to keep the areas clean. There were quite a few dogs there at the time of my visit and the place smelled very clean, a testament to his attention to his charges and the maintenance of the facility. I am traveling with my new kitten and she got diarrhea and I had to take her to the ER. She is fine now but I wanted to get her a bath before driving back to Iowa city. The kind woman on the phone said they do not take kittens but would be happy to help if Alicia the groomer consented. She did, so I brought my kitten mango in. Not only were they so gentle and kind, they made sure to get to know mango and my's backstories. I even heard the groomer make it a point to meet the parents of other dogs she has just groomed to ensure she was 100% happy. I was nervous mango wouldn't like it, but she was so calm and sweet with them. I expected to pay about $20.... but nope! FREE OF CHARGE because all they wanted was for mango to get home okay.
