5th Street - Roy Wilkins Auditorium
    Scott J.

Bad acoustics, no character, lack of restrooms, poor concessions but some great acts over the years (must be cheap?) and a great location. Most recently saw Wilco on 10/2/09, and they put on a great show, despite the venue. The first time I entered from the 5th street side and there was an unlit, limestone wall that said "Roy Wilkins Auditorium" which made me think the place was going to be a cool old place (see photo). Wrong.

It's hard to give such a low review to a venue that The Beatles performed at, but it is awful. If they made the concert stage 360 in the center of the floor then it might work, but almost every seat in the house is a difficult vantage point. The only positive attribute about Wilkins is its the only venue that can host a concert between 1st Ave and Xcel center which is small vs huge and can bring in some good medium size acts. I have not been to a Roller Girls event so I might be updating the review if its better than a concert.

That said, if you like live music as I do), this place needs to be on your list to check out. Back in June, I attended a Prince tribute performance (Nothing Compares 2P) here and neither the venue nor the music disappointed. The layout is great; starting with an elevated staged and just below that is a dance floor and beyond that area is seating (tables/chairs). There are great views of the stage from mostly anywhere in the space and most importantly, the sound system was on point. Because of demand, for this performance, the dance floor was converted to seating and while understandable, other than in your seat, it made dancing virtually nonexistent. So much so that if someone stood up to dance at their table, the staff working the event would quickly swoop in ask them to be seated so as not to block the view of the people behind them. While relatively large, there is a single bar which was well-stocked and staffed when I was there. I am not sure if it the norm, but on the night I was there they had a $20 minimum for credit card use. Also, the only water they were serving was bottled (no cups of water) so be mindful of that. While this was my first visit to the Minnesota Music Café, it won't be the last. I will gladly return here for future performances.

A huge music venue with full bar, stage, food, dance floor and seating. There is also a back patio. It was half packed and a cover band playing the R&B, Soul and Disco classics rocked the house. Both were delicious. I like dark beers and these two didn't make me feel fatigue or heavy / bloated. The vibe is a little grunge, a little beer hally, and a little rock all combined into one. They have a ton of live music throughout the month although my trip, which was 530pm on a Tuesday didn't include any. They have a garden / smoking section out back with 3-4 picnic benches that felt really huge. I could definitely come back and would even consider a show here. Reason why I knock it down from 3 stars to 2 is because when we walked in, one of the managers gave us such a dirty look. And when we said hi, he gave a half hearted smile and turned back to doing his audits. Sure, everyone has a bad day. And perhaps he was reacting to something different. Nevertheless, I was ready to get my drink and be out. Was hungry and wanted food but decided rather spend my money elsewhere.

The weekend breakfast, bloodies and bartenders are awesome as we've been working our way thru the breakfast menu every Saturday at the bar. They just changed the menu so there are some new exciting things to try like the breakfast Monte Cristo but sad to see one of my favorites the Reuben Benedict is now gone. Was sooo good. My other recommendations are the Cajun hash and the corned beef hash and the blackened walleye Benedict along with the Monte Cristo. Often we sit at the bar which is really nice but you can't go wrong sitting outside especially in the evening where it seems a little extra special, especially if you're out there with a few friends like we did a couple times already. Some of our friends that lived out west a bit came out here to visit us so we had to bring them to lucky 13 and they really enjoyed it. They said what a great place and what a wonderful outdoor patio area here they have. The food is great too. And always had great service. I think we've been here about 8 times since we've moved here and at times with other friends and family and there's a lot of other places we haven't tried yet but when you find something great you kinda don't want to risk going elsewhere. I hope that by adding this review I might help at least a little to spread the word and attract an even wider audience to their performances. I've been enjoying their concerts since their first year (1999). They've moved around until finally settling on Hopkins High School as their venue of choice. I ask that you not roll your eyes and think of your old high school gym with the bleachers extended for a band recital. This is a very good concert hall with excellent accoustics, comfortable seating and clear sight lines. Guest artists over the years have included, among others: Gordon Goodwin, Arturo Sandoval, David Weckl, Phil Woods, Paquito D'Rivera, The New York Voices, Peter Erskine, Wayne Bergeron, Joey DeFrancesco, Bob Mintzer, Slide Hampton, Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, James Moody, John Clayton, Ernie Watts, Fred Sturm, Bobby Shew and Terell Stafford. They often feature local and regional artists as well. Do yourself a favor and check out this stellar ensemble. Then, once they've blown you away with their sound tell others. I want to see this group not just survive but thrive for years to come. Tip, the Lone Spur Restaurant just down the road stays open late for an after show dinner.

I was pumped when my upcoming wedding band Clean Plate Club (CPC) got to open here which is my reason for visiting. I'm not much of a concert girly so this was a big step for me. There is a tiny parking lot in the back, otherwise, a few blocks down in the residential streets there is complimentary parking - just ensure you follow the sign rules as it goes by odd and even sides based on the date. To lead with parking confusion is why I'm giving this venue 4 stars. Walking as a single woman for a night show by University is not something I would ever suggest unless you have a buddy with. For this venue, I would recommend the buddy system or Uber. The venue has a normal bouncer, ID check and tickets can be purchased in advance via the AXS app or onsite. Once inside, the venue is breathable and long. The stage sits at the opposite side of entry and there is a long bar on the side wall, a few tables in the back, and then standing room for most concerts. My friend and I ordered a drink from the bar and then weaseled our way to the front to support CPC. The sound, lighting and stage was the best! We had a great time. Looks like there is a basement here (I never visited it) and that food is served. Also can't speak for this but something to look into. Thanks, Turf Club!!
