Enjoyed yesterday here a fantastic musical, Dear Evan Hansen. The story is about teenagers struggling life like trying to fit in, social anxiety, etc. Winner of six 2017 Tony awards. Check out the amazing theme song "Waving Through A Window". This show will run until Sept 29, 2019. Be sure to bring some tissues.

Pros: - the Royal Alex is a wonderful historic theatre - the fairly recent renovation was very well done. The historic features of the theatre were preserved while the comfort was increased with wider seats and more leg room. - the sightlines are great even from the cheaper balcony seats. Short theatregoers can still see the stage no matter how tall the people in the row ahead are. - the shows presented are often top notch - the walk from St Andrews subway station is not long Cons: - due to the age of the building (built around 1907), there's no elevator. This limits the choice of accessible seats for anyone with mobility issues. - the area around the dress circle concession stand is small leading to difficulty getting past people in line in order to reach the stairs to the balcony CAA Lounge (Major Con): When Mirvish partnered with CAA there was great fanfare about the benefits for those with a CAA membership. This is a joke at the Royal Alex! I lined up at the CAA lounge for my complimentary tea only to be told when I finally reached the front of the line that I would have to go to another concession stand where my CAA card could be scanned and a voucher given. This is because there's no scanner at the CAA lounge. I had to line up at the other concession stand and wait my turn for the scan and voucher. After my card was finally scanned, I had to return to the back of the line at the CAA lounge to wait my turn again, hand over the voucher and get my cup of tea. MR MIRVISH, PLEASE BUY A SCANNER FOR THE CAA LOUNGE. I'm pretty sure you can afford one! At the very least, there should be signage at the CAA lounge directing us to the other concession stand before we waste our time in the wrong line.

It's been ages since I've watched a musical and I had a blast watching this show! I saw Kinky Boots and the show was great. It was full of comedy, nice musical performance, and colourful costumes. I sat at the balcony and had a good view of the show. Seats were comfortable. One thing that the ushers will do is tell not to put things at the edge of the balcony, presumable so you don't drop things on the people sitting below. If you're into Arts and want to have good laughs, I highly recommend watching this. It's a heartfelt story about two boys growing out of their father's shadows and pursuing their dreams. I should mention the nature of the story revolves about a drag queen, so it's not exactly a kid friendly show ;) Anyways, go watch it and have fun!

Gorgeous theatre I was thoroughly impressed by the outer and inner decor. A friend mentioned they had just redone the space and it's absolutely beautiful with great views regardless of where your sitting. Sound us incredible and there are multiple exits and entrances which mean your in and out quickly. The cafe is surprisingly mid priced and there is service on the first and second floors which is great for intermission. Overall thoroughly enjoyed watching the lorax here!

What a great show! Come from away musical, it's funny, sentimental, and so energizing, I feel like dancing with the music. The theater staff are polite and always willing to answer any question. They accept Apple Pay witch this is a +++ for me since I left my debit card back home (Miami). I sped 50 something for my seat and it has the perfect view. If you are in Toronto you must visit and watch a Show!!

The older sister to the Princess of Wales theatre (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/the-princess-of-wales-theatre-toronto) down the street from it, this is your more elegant and smaller of the pair of theatres that bring life to the theatre district of Toronto. With a seating capacity of around 1500 or so, the interior brings to mind the more historical elements that have made this theatre somewhat of a landmark. Having staged such performances as "Hair" and Godspell", the venue has seen many greats grace its stage, from Mary Pickford, The Marx Brothers, Maggie Smith, and Orson Welles. And why not? At the time, and even to current day, the history of the venue makes it a place you'd want to perform at. The theatre itself has great acoustics for musicals as well as more dramatic pieces, and the staff are kind and do their best to get you seated for the performances. Recently, they've been putting on musicals such as "We Will Rock You" and "Dirty Dancing". Me and musicals do not get along much. So, I guess I'll just wait until the next dramatic piece is put on there. It's worth the wait.

We arrived about half an hour early after stopping at Lake Effect for scoops. Who needs dinner and a show when tummy ice cream is involved? The theater also sells snacks as food and drinks from the outside are banned. We were greeted outside by a dapper gentleman who held the door for us to get into the lobby. Unlike other theaters, there was elbow room to have them check out printed tickets and make conversation about the show. Others had digital tickets that seemed to work as well. We popped into the loo, which thankfully had multiple stalls, hardly any wait and was fully stocked with soap and towels. There were people selling souvenir toys and raffle tickets that we bypassed to find our seats. The playbill girl gave us a rough estimate of where we would be located. Thankfully everything is clearly labeled as to not get lost. For a mere 40 each, after fees, we were five rows back, centered. The view was clear, the sound was clear and the leg room- my gosh. For the first time in a long time a theater had room for me to stretch my legs a bit instead of cramming in more seats. The view is historically gorgeous in architecture and paint. Though we were there to experience the show, not just a building. The show started on time, held a brief intermission and concluded in about two hours. During that time, we got wowed by talented singers, very acrobatic dancers and mostly talented actors. (There was one that we would have probably chosen a different person to portray the roll, but I'm not going to crush a child's dreams when they did adequately. And others filled their rolls amazingly so I'm chalking it up to personal preference.) The costumes are well constructed without being extravagant. Tiny shorts cover any areas that would make this child friendly show receive an R rating. At the end, after all the standing ovations, we were able to exit with ease and get back to the car, parked at no cost in a nearby lot. Beat that Buffalo parking. Extra shout-out to whoever put the dual drummers in the loge to let us see the masterminds at work. They were the heartbeat of the show for me!

In the downstairs restaurant, we were greeted by the host, and seated by a young man named Justin. Justin didn't speak much, but he and the other younger staff members took our plates whenever they were dirty. You get up to get your water yourself, and also have the option of ordering soft drinks and alcohol. After pouring myself a glass of water, I went to the salad bar and basically picked a bit of whatever I saw. I was in new territory here... As in I saw a white onion and said "lychee!" and the customer in front of me corrected me that it was in fact, not lychee. I returned to my seat and enjoyed my salad. I noticed a line was forming for the buffet. This is apparently an old style buffet when you leave your seat to wait in line to be served. I've never encountered a buffet like this...usually I go to self-serve buffets. Anyway, I waited about 10 minutes when there were about 10 people in front of me. I think their menu changes from time to time, but boyyyy their raviolli was SO GOOD. I went back for seconds...and thirds. Their chicken was also very juicy. Everything else was above average. I just wanted to note the standout is definitely the ravioli. Get ittt. You also have your pick at unlimited dessert, which is a slice of pie or cake. The only con during my buffet experience is that I had to wait in line...too used to the grab n' go self-serve experience! You know dinner is about to end when the man playing the guitar starts singing. That gives you about 10-15 mins to finish your dinner or grab more food to finish. Once he's done, he'll tell you to make your way upstairs. Once upstairs, your group is assigned seats at random. Their staff member will tell you where you are. Once everyone was seated, the lights dimmed, and the play began. We watched Sylvia, which wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't enjoy it as much as my partner's parents did, but I can appreciate the story, acting, and overall effort the crew and cast put into the performance. Overall, I got a very "homey" experience here, despite coming here for the first time. I think the performances may be of more interest to older audiences, but it doesn't hurt to give Herongate a try.
