I remember trying Royal Farms in Maryland (Frederick) & having a great experience & fried chicken. So being in Ashburn, VA today, let's try it! Ordered 3 piece white (Breast & 2 wings) added a chicken tender, came with biscuit and ordered side of slaw. The chicken tender was hot, fresh and juicy. Good quality chicken but the seasoning & flavor was lacking. Needed the hot sauce. 7/10 Tried the biscuit next. It was hot. Crispy on the outside, soft & fluffy on the inside. But lacking in buttermilk or butter and salt. The texture was good but flavor, lacking. 6/10 Coleslaw....just bad. Thick and creamy full of mayo. A bit sweet. Crunch initially but cause of so much thick sauce, started to get soft. 1/10 "Western" Fries... not good. Coated in seasoning with no flavor. Flabby and not soft & fluffy inside. Bad. 0.5/10 Fried chicken. Crispy outer coating but again, lacking in seasonings (herbs & spices). The breast was hot but dry. Maybe sat around. Wings were better but again, lacked seasoning. 5/10 This was not the Royal Farms experience I remembered in Frederick, Maryland. Maybe just the location was the issue. Can't imagine it was Royal Farms as a whole. Might needed a surprise taste/quality check once in a while to keep the location honest & consistent. Food is edible but barely. I was introduced to Royal Farms solely via their commercials as a sponsor of the TV show on PBS/s Motor Week, which is one of my favorite shows. After seeing the commercials for years, I finally stopped by a Royal Farms in PA near the MD border in November 2024 on my way back from a conference in Hershey, PA. Long story short: I was quite impressed. Fast forward to last week when my wife asked me to suggest a meal from a vendor that [we] never had. That's when I decided to stop by my local Royal Farms. BTW, I actually didn't realize there was a relatively new Royal Farms not too far from our house. The food manager helped me get the most bang for my buck by suggesting combos which fit my requirement of white meat (wings and breasts) and dark meat. I also ordered the potato wedges, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes. The batter was crispy, well seasoned yet not over-salted, and moist. Royal Farms was a home run!!! Heading backs today. The staff was courteous, the food was hot and savory, and the price was reasonable. Will I be back? I'm on my way there now. Seriously. read more

I read a food critic's reviews of the best fried chicken in the DC area and was surprized to see that Royal Farms chicken rated ahead of every other fried chicken place except Popeyes. So I had to try it for myself. My review? The critic was right! Who woulda known!? The fried chicken was delicious. Crispy outside, juicy inside. The seasoning did not overwhelm the flavor of the chicken, which I personally prefer. The chicken tenders were hugh and likewise delicious. My friend and I also tried their potato wedges and bisquit. The wedges were lightly breaded and perfectly seasoned. Similar to the wedges you used to find at KFC. The bisquit was the one downer of the meal. Price for a 2 piece chicken meal with one side and a bisquit was under $7. I do think that Popeyes is best but I will definitely search out Royal Farms too when I have a hankering for fried chicken. read more

We had just finished some grocery shopping at Lidl and since Royal Farms is right beside it, we decided to check it out. No, we didn't come here to get gas. We came here to try out their fried chicken we keep hearing about. This place has a variety of snacks, cold/hot drinks, and menu items from their in-store restaurant. Most everything is within reach, except if you want something from their menu. Place an order by going to the kiosk and using their touch screen. Once your order is placed, a receipt is printed out with an order number on it. If you need anything else from the store, pick it up and then head to the cashier. They will scan your receipt from the kiosk and ring up any other purchases. One of the employees at in-store restaurant calls out your number and hands you your food. Condiments are within reach. We enjoyed the chicken here. It was fresh, crisp on the outside and juicy within. It had good flavor but a bit on the saltier side. Employees were all very friendly on our visit. Hunar told us about a deal they were having for their chicken breasts. He was friendly and incredibly helpful. The cashiers were all very friendly as well. I really enjoy Royal Farms fried chicken. This station is new and huge, a lot bigger than the Royal Farms locations I am used to around Baltimore, MD. The station is large, bright, well stocked with snack, beverage and food options, in addition to the chicken, which can be purchased by the piece, individual meal, family dinner pack or multiple pieces. There is also a dining area. I had a breast and wing meal with thick cut seasoned fries. The chicken was juicy, tasty and definitely not greasy. Fries were good, I also bought 8 pieces to take home for future meals. Leftover chicken was best eaten cold and was ok when reheated. Royal Farms currently does not sell Top Tier Gas, so I did not buy gas, hopefully that will change. They seem to be adding new franchises to compete with Sheetz and Wawa. Of the three, I definitely prefer Royal Farms and their delicious chicken. read more

Bathrooms are always filthy. Went in mens room and the urinals were full of piss, toilets back up. Went out and asked for the manager, black dude comes from behind the counter with urgency. There are lots of great things about this royal farms, first it's the friendly employees, the level of cleanliness, lots gas pumps, great beverage selection and hands down my favorite coffee. I prefer their coffee over Starbucks, Dunkin' and other more popular brands. They have a rewards program, you just have to sign up and get one of the rewards cards next to the register. I mainly use the rewards card to get discounts on gasoline (usually 10 cents off per gallon) and every 7th cup of coffee is free. There have been times where the coffee wasn't piping hot and that's how coffee should be, not all varieties of coffee have been available and often times they run out of creamer. It's a bit of a hassle to have to find an employee to make them aware and it takes time for them to replenish the creamers, especially when you're in a rush in the morning which makes the coffee making experience longer than it should. Royal farms has a cult following for their fried chicken but it's not my favorite. To me, the chicken is just too salty and I've tried it a handful of times and yet it's been heavily seasoned every time. Other than that it's juicy, well breaded but not too heavily and it has good flavor. I'm a return customer and I'm glad they're in my neck of the woods. read more

They just opened today, but if this is a taste of what's to come, the food was delicious. The chicken is juicy with a crispy batter. There's enough pepper for a little spice without being overpowering. The potato wedges were also good. I would probably pass on the mashed potatoes. The chicken sandwiches looked quite appetizing. The chicken is very good if a bit salty at times. The daily fresh donuts from Krispy Kreme are delicious. The gas prices are decent for Ashburn. Otherwise, the rest of the food here isn't very good. If I have a hankering for fried chicken I come up here, or if I want a KKD donut, but that's about it. read more

We got the family meal for $42 and what an awful experience. First they forgot the fries, then we got home and noticed there was no gravy for the mashed potatoes. While this new ROFO is in an EXCELLENT location and the store is very bright and clean, clearly no one is taking control of operations. Day to day tasks of ensuring the store is supplied are not happening. While they advertise $1 size fountain drinks you can count on one or more of the following not being available: cups, the soda syrups, straws, lids, etc. This may seem insignificant but when you're stopping with barely a minute to spare on your morning commute, it is frustrating. I'm done giving this business the benefit of the doubt because it is new-going back to the Shell store around the corner or 7-11. Also, when I mentioned this plus countless other issues since opening including waiting forever for food ordered at the deli, the store manager told me to call corporate. Excellent customer service. Stopped here for two reasons, needed to use the restroom and needed a solid amount of food before going grocery shopping next door at the new LIDL. Its nice that there is a Royal Farms this close to home. I haven't found one close since I live in the Baltimore area. I love their fried chicken, especially when it is hot, fresh and limited grease. Restrooms here were clean and they had the nifty new features where soap, sink and dry are all automatic, just put your hands underneath all three and you're taken care of. The fourth feature was an automatic door opener that you didn't need to touch the handle, just waive your hand in front of the sensor and it opens. Unfortunately I had already touched the handle as I wasn't expecting that new technology yet. Will try it and report on the next visit or next place that I see it. Coming out, I found the self order computers, similar to what they have at Sheetz. I thought I wanted the fried chicken but before ordering, I pressed other buttons and clicked around just to see my choices. Ultimately I chose a two piece dark with western fries and a roll. Didn't want the extra side. After ordering, I walked around the store a bit and didn't see anything I wanted so I went to the register, which was required before picking up my order (similar to Sheetz). However, there was no one at the register. The women who was supposed to be there, was joking around with other employees elsewhere in the store. Even when she came to wait on me, it was inappropriate joking amongst her team members and not paying enough attention on the customer and the job at hand. Once that fiasco was resolved, I grabbed my box meal which was waiting for me and headed to the car to enjoy my snack. The western fries were delicious, just the right seasoning consistency and the chicken was fresh, hot and had very little grease, certainly nothing dripping from the chicken as I've experienced at other NoVA fried chicken restaurants. The roll was tasty, not dry at all and even held its consistency during the time I was grocery shopping next door. Other than the issue with the cashier, which is the reason for the 3 versus 5 stars, all other aspects of this convenience store were nice and well thought out and well placed. Will probably stop here in the future when shopping next door, if for no other reason than to fill up my tank at lower priced gasoline. I had been hearing about "gas station chicken" for years, and was thrilled when Royal Farms started building their new Ashburn location. I recently got to try it and I'd say that the chicken is pretty good...maybe a little bit below my expectations as it was good, not great. Maybe if I had eaten at the store it might have been better as the chicken lost some of its crispiness during the 10-minute drive home. A couple of disappointing things: The wait was way too long. I showed up at 6:45 pm on a weekday and waited 40 minutes for the chicken. Also, the potato wedges I heard about were absolutely soggy- I think between the four members of my family, we ate one of them and then threw them away. Also, for a pretty big store, they don't really have more items for sale than your average Exxon or Sunoco store. I did like the mac and cheese and I would rate the fried chicken about even with Popeye's. If you like fried chicken, I'd say you should try Frito Chicken in Ashburn, theirs is always crispy outside, juicy inside and it has a little spice to it- it's my current favorite. Chicken was ready and quick but was no better than something I could get at KFC or Popeyes. The skin/breading wasn't crispy and had a slight burnt flavor. Taking it off made the chicken itself taste much better, but then it isn't fried chicken. We've had sandwiches from other Royal Farms that were good so I'm willing to go back to try that. The chicken is excellent, with the breasts being extra large! We've gone several times in recent weeks, and everyone is wonderful. Last night, the cashier ran out and stopped us when I forgot the bucket (thank you!). As someone else noted, the place is very clean, and there are plenty of gas pumps. Love that there is finally a gas station on this side of the Broadlands! I like the fact that there is a rewards card since I shop and get gas often. The staff is friendly and the store has a good selection of products. Also love the fee free ATM! As for the chicken, I will say it is simply ok. When they first opened it was not good as it tasted like burned grease. I think they have worked out the kinks but still I would not make this my go to fried chicken spot. The chicken is seasoned but still lacks something. They have breakfast sandwiches which is good in mornings and I would rate them as simply ok too. They are pricey 3.30ish each. I visited this place several times in the past and ordered their chicken, sometimes sandwiches and wraps, yesterday I went and ordered a new soup they are pushing broccoli cheddar and an order of chicken strips. Well, the soup was served at room temperature and I don't know if soup is supposed to have little bubbles coming out and blowing up in the surface in my experience that only happens as a result of bacteria decomposing the food. I opened the mashed potato that came with the chicken and it was also cold, I proceeded to open the box where the chicken came in and a ripe smell came out of the box, I touched the chicken and it was also cold. In the beginning I did not believe the smell was coming from the chicken, I smelled it 3 times and confirmed that the chicken was the reason for the smell. I put everything back together and told a lady behind the counter that the chicken did not smell good and after smelling it, she responded that smelled fine. I responded, well, I'm not eating it, and threw it in the garbage and walked out of the place ready to write this and many other reviews and reach out to my credit card company for a refund. Came to fill up my gas tank last night. After pumping my gas I tried to start my car and was having some issues. It had been a long day at work so I called my boyfriend for help. While I am on the phone sitting in my car, almost on the verge of tears one of your employees comes up to the trash can near the gas pump I'm parked at. I see him in my side mirror and hear him say something. Thinking he's asking me if I need help I turn around to hear him better. He proceeds to tell me that anyone who throws away their household garbage in the trash can will have to pay a big fine! Mind you I had not thrown away anything or touched said garbage can. I told him that I had none of that garbage was mine. HE THEN TOLD ME THAT HE WOULD CALL THE COPS ON ME AND LET THEM DECIDE!! Are you kidding me??? I couldn't believe that an employee whose job it is to empty the trash would go out of their way to accuse someone and then threaten to call the cops on them even after they told them that trash wasn't theirs!! When they 1st opened, I wrote a positive review. That is no longer the case!!! The chicken and fries were cooked in rancid oil... I mean the after taste was terrible. Crazy machines always require assistance to order... Oh, they don't tell you that drinks aren't on the machine... you have to go get your choice and take it to the register while you wait for your food. The drink stations aren't stocked!
