This company is doing work right outside my door as I write this. I have a child sick at home today so leaned out the door this morning to ask what would be going on. The owner, Mr Sweet, proceeded to lie directly to my face about the nature of the work today. I have a sick child at home and wanted to know what to expect. He smiled and told me they'd be mulching and laying grass seed. I said thank you and stepped back inside. An hour later heavy equipment began digging trenches in the space outside my door. Mulch may go down in that area at some point, but today it was a construction project. Why lie about that? It's none of my business what someone chooses to do on their property or who they get to do it. But it's been my experience in this world that a man who will lie to one person will lie to other people. Especially when he knows that lie will be evident very shortly. That's a man who just doesn't care. That's not the kind of man I want working on my property. I don't have a choice about him working on the property next door. Mr Sweet was entirely unconcerned when I asked him why he hadn't been honest this morning, laughing it off as a joke. How a man acts in a minute says a lot about how man will act in the broader world. An honest man will always be honest; a dishonest man will lie to you too. This is your local gardening & nursery store, with both indoor & outdoor areas. You have to walk through the outside garden area to enter inside, & I would say the outside is where the stuff that intrigues me lies. This is where all of the fountains, plants, & statues are on display. They have several neat fountains, all pumping out water. As for the inside, they have all the little trinkets that you'd have either in your garden or even in your house. It's more decorations & such inside, but still some good stuff such as birdhouses. We had a chat with the owner of the place & she was great. We probably talked with her for about 10 minutes or so, about everything from her business to politics. She really made you feel welcomed in this place that is an old house transformed into a store. The whole atmosphere of the place is great, from the bubbling brook in the front, to the flower gardens & hanging plants on the front porch. Looks like just another house from the outside as you go zooming by on 7th Street, but this family-run garden shop is worth a look if you need to spruce up your yard or get your green thumb on. The inside of the house is more like a gift shop with a pretty wide variety of gardening gifts and knick-knacks- from watering cans to small planters to all kinds of kitsch one can stick into their garden. If you are searching for a unique gift for the gardening friend, this would be an excellent stop. Outback they have an impressive selection of fountains and larger pots to hold your green-wares. It's fun just to stroll thru and look (and listen) to all the options bubbling thru all makes of vessels and sculptures. During the planting months, they do carry the obligatory selection of vegetables and herbs. They also sometimes carry some more interesting things to plant. The real reason you should visit here, though, is for the advice and expertise of the owners who know their neighborhood and the surroundings. This place is just awesome. I have never felt so welcome. The staff was so helpful and just so kind. I had this place on my radar for awhile and was really glad I finally stepped inside. I contracted a complete landscaping & irrigation project that cost in excess of $25K. The plant beds were inadequately prepared. Organic matter was simply spread over the red clay & was not tilled in. The plantings were personally guaranteed for a year by the owner, Jared Sweet. Although he did replace some plants that died within a few months, he refused to honor his guarantee at the end of the year. By this time many of the poorly transplanted plants had died. I filed a complaint with the BBB (look up The Royal Gardens on BBB website for detailed information) which remains unresolved as Mr Sweet refused to participate in the arbitration process. I would strongly advise anyone seeking a quality landscaping contractor to look elsewhere. read more

I finally stopped by and was immediately impressed with the wide and interesting selection of all garden related items but especially planters, sculpture and fountains. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I bought a fountain and they did a great job in installing it. One of my top three garden places I shop at here in Charlotte. Just a fun place to visit and hang out for a bit, don't rush your visit if you can help it. I love their heirloom roses and statuary, and the staff are wonderful and about the friendliest around. read more
