I had a very unpleasant experience at this location today. I went to the store after seeing products on sale. 5457-840, 5457-841, 5457-842 Armstrong 3 pack of bird suet. They would not honor the price shown on the website and when I asked why, they told me they are a different division and different stores have different prices. When I pulled out my phone and showed the employee the sale price at this store location, they got very annoyed with me, called out the manager and the whole situation escalated. When the items were scanned they indeed come up showing the sale price. I received no apology from any of the three employees I encountered and was meant to feel that I was a bother to them. I left the store angry that they could not even admit to their mistake but rather try to insinuate that I was an unwelcome customer. read more

I don't understand the negative reviews. I've lived in this area for years and have been in many many times to get stuff. They are not over the top friendly like Starbucks, but they are knowledgeable and professional, and treat customers well. The staff are mostly long-time employees and have tons of knowledge. If you are going to close your store early you should update your phone recording. I ran out of epoxy for a job I needed to finish up. I called the store in the afternoon and listened to the recording that said the store was open until 7:00 pm on Wednesdays which was great as I would have enough time to get there after work. When I walked up to the store at 6:15 pm I was greeted by locked doors and a sign saying that the store had closed at 1pm that day and wouldn't re-open for another day-and-a-half. I understand that stores need to close outside their regular hours periodically for repairs or to do inventory but remember to do the easy things like updating your phone recordings. On a different note: Get some cashiers who actually like their jobs. The staff on the floor are always friendly and helpful but the cashiers barely say hello, nevermind doing the extra things like asking if you have an Aeroplan card or would like a bag for your purchase. read more

In my never ending quest to collect Aeroplan I have ended up at places which I would say are not in desirable area (read I would only go there if I have to). I walked in and I saw too long winding lineups at the cash registers. A smallish store more like a neighborhood place to serve your needs. Things are packed tight with stuff going all the way up to the ceiling. Never mind I was here to get some keys replicated and other stuff. I had to look for an associate and typical of this store was being chased by other customers. Patiently I waited for my turn. The associate was polite and took time in helping me out. There was slight wait at checkout but I got the most important reason for coming here Aeroplan Points! With the alternate being bigger (Canadian Tire) but with poor service I can say if you are in the area I wouldn't mind coming here. read more

I went into the Royal Home Hardware today because every year at this time, my house fills up with giant flies. I don't know why. There's no garbage or rotting stuff and to be honest, the flies aren't that interested in anything in particular. They just fly around and rest on the walls and ceiling. In any case, I'm kind of annoyed that it's 2011 and we haven't really made any advancements in fly repelling and capture over and above those sticky paper tubes that are unsightly and gross. I was disappointed but browsed around some more and ended up picking up a new light for my bike (because someone stole mine and then I was stopped by the police for not having one). One of the guys who worked there asked if I needed help and gave me some advice about how to get the mount thing for my old light off (the screw is rusted). That's actually the main reason I like to go here. The people who work here kind of remind me of my dad. They know all about all manner of handy things and tell me all about them which is nice because my dad lives in Vancouver and I sometimes need my fill of handy dad advice. It's also pretty close to my house and it's not the Canadian Tire at Bay and Dundas (that whole area makes me anxious!) read more

Greatest place to shop , they've been around for over 40 years and most of their staff been around for minimum of 10 years and up to 30 years , good prices excellent customer service, I find it usually the shoplifters tend to leave a bad review on this store, it you dont believe me check it out yourself, most stores try to push customers to buy things these guys let customers decide on their own and only assist when customers ask for help !! read more

Horrible customer service. Unfriendly, rude, dismissive... first they didn't allow me in the store 3 minutes before the closing. Another time when I needed bulbs, I asked them if it doesn't work or broken or something (as sometimes they get shaken up during their cargo) if I could bring it back, they told me if it doesn't work it would be my fault and they don't accept it back. Then I asked them to try it in the store to see if it's working (as I didn't want to take it home and come back) they also declined it. So they want you to buy a product and you're not able to test it or return it if it's broken. Customer might be always right at other store but not here. I have never had a good experience in this store and stop going in a few years ago most recently I needed to buy something there and of course came across the same situation as I did a few years ago trying to find a store associate #1 -#2 when I did my experience was the same- Associates working in the store ,miserable unfriendly and acted like they were doing me a favor I was dealing with a heavyset gentleman who look like he was having a bad day. I was going to ask him if he was having a bad day , If you're having a bad day please don't take it out on me or your customers. I just love this store. The staff are super knowlegeable & NICE, especially to us gals who sometimes need a bit more help. Someone even helps me strap awkward loads onto my bicycle when necessary. The prices are comparable to the large chains, which I avoid. Shopping here is always a pleasure, & one of the reasons Cabbagetown is such a great place. read more

Have been attending this store for over 25 years. Some employees are local less fortunate persons. They were (totally) out of ice melter before a snow fall!. I went the next day - selection of three types. Yes - you may put stuff on order - it usually appears on time and as described. If you go regularly you will know where most stuff is. I'd rather my profit dollars went here than Canadian Tire. They give good advice (and if not - ask for who DOES know about this stuff) and will usually refund any reasonable items. Support your local employees and employers. P.S. Don't go in wearing a red shirt (their uniform) - a woman asked me if I could show her where my nuts are (Yes, but I think you want a store employee to assist you). read more

In the neighbourhood, on a rare occasion, needing light bulbs, I walked in at about 1 45 p.m. today. I walked toward a red-shirted gentleman, bent over the stock, not sure if he was staff. He stood up, I saw his shirt label but he walked right past me to a man who came in after me and offered help, totally ignoring me (an older woman with a cane). I found bulbs for myself but wasn't sure how to replace what I have. As I walked to the next aisle, I saw the customer who'd been served walking out with nothing. Looking down that aisle, I saw that the staff member was now way at the back serving someone else. I went to the checkout and asked if anyone could help me. The woman there stepped forward, and we checked bulbs. I found she knew even less than I did, and although I managed to find (on my own) a package of 2 rather than 10, I'm not sure they'll work or if my superintendent will be able to install them. Home Hardware on Danforth has normally been very helpful, but I won't be going back to "Royal." read more

Had bought a fan and went to return it little after a month. Was told can't be returned because of the store policy..that's fine. But the customer service person was no rude..made no eye contact, very curt and condescending. When I confronted him for that he remained totally unapologetic. I recently moved and today went to my new local Home Hardware, Royal Home Hardware: 485 Parliament Street,Toronto, ON. I had a list of items and no idea where to look. An associate approached me and I asked for my first item. At this point a man sitting nearby, who was later identified as the manager (I asked for the manager to address the issue, but he was the issue!), adopted a snotty tone of voice and told me that I couldn't need longer switchplate screws, as switchplates are only 3/8" thick (whomever installed my box installed it well back from the drywall). I started to argue, but frankly, I can't be bothered. Toronto has many hardware stores eager for my business, as indeed I found after I left Royal Home Hardware. As I regaled neighbours with the tale, They rolled their eyes and agreed that they'd also had poor experiences with that manager. I found another local (non Home) hardware store, they had everything I needed and were very pleasant, and I came happily home with my purchases. Home Hardware lost a pretty big spender today - I always have some sort of woodwork or reno project going on, and I have a new home to paint and renovate! read more

I have (tried) to shop at this store since I have lived in the area, since 2004. More often than not whatever you want from this store has to be special ordered. Why is that I can find it online from their website, but when I go, the item aren't in stock? Recently I shopped for a common item only to be told to look somewhere else, if we order it it won't come in for another 3 weeks. How is that for customer service? read more

I live locally, do most of my own maintenance and shop here often because it saves driving to Home Depot etc. It is a classic old-style downtown hardware store. Yes it does have narrow aisles, high-stacked shelves etc but the staff are great and it carries an amazing range of products for its size. It is a few pennies more expensive than the big stores. I never find the line-ups take any longer than the big stores. read more
