Very clean, walking distance from the beach and town - overall a great stay - 100 percent would recommend to my family and friends

Until they built across the street you have an ocean view from pool area!

This was my second stay at Royal Palms Resort (RPR), this one with my partner celebrating our birthdays, and about 18 months ago we hosted an out of town friend. I've also stopped by on occasions for the Sunday Funday, as well as a drink at the poolside bar, and lunch. I live north of Ft. Lauderdale, and have stayed at other gay resorts in FL and around the USA. Let me address the issue which some guys have raised regarding it being gay, gay friendly, or overrun with straights/women/families. There is no doubt that this is a gay establishment, not simply gay-friendly. While there may have been an issue in the not so distant past where guests at other hotel properties owned by the same parent company visited RPR for breakfast, that seems to have been addressed with the offering of breakfasts at the [very good] PLAZA BISTRO, a block away, also owned by the same parent company. During our 4 days there, about a week ago, we saw no families with children anywhere on the premises, not anyone who would be classified as a "gawker", (other than some guys in their 80's), but I don't think that was the group some guys were complaining about! There may have been one woman as a hotel guest, and there were 2 at the Sunday Fun-Day. Yes, it is no longer clothing optional at the pool, but it wasn't clothing optional about 18 months ago, either. And honestly, does it need to be clothing optional to allow guys to "express" themselves? Most of the really built guys were wearing speedo-type bathing suits, underwear which covered very little, or jocks. Some were so well hung, and their "swim suits/underwear" so tight, you could see the veins/rim of their dicks. Like, guys, isn't that enough? and also hot? Like come on, its not a bathhouse. OK, there is not a hot tub/jacuzzi. And while some have commented that such would be a good venue for guys to meet other guys, I saw lots of guys meeting in the pool, at the bar, at their lounges. And, no one commented on the small, but well appointed, and immaculate GYM...you can go there, pose, work-out, and meet/greet. Again, it's a hotel, boyz. LOCATION/PARKING: One block from the ocean. For awhile until construction begins, you can actually see the ocean from several rooms, as well as the bar. They have plenty of designated, safe and free parking spots. BAR/CAFE: Serves free good coffee all day. Breakfasts are really good, huge omelets, fresh fruits. Lunches include huge salads, generous sized wraps and burgers, with a variety of sides. Alcohol flows all day, bar is open on weekends till 2 AM, it gets busy at lunch and in early eves. Area to sit with tables, or eat/drink poolside. Waiter service poolside. HOUSEKEEPING/UTILITIES: In a word, outstanding. The rooms are kept immaculate throughout your stay, plenty of towels, the bed linens will be changed if you desire. Lots of hot water. Rain head showers. Open and spacious showers. DESIGN OF PROPERTY/DECOR: This is renovated 1950's style Fort Lauderdale beach 2 story hotel. Two buildings. Two pools. Two floors in each building. Lush landscaping/natural trees/private. Access rooms by a balcony. The furniture in rooms is simple, clean, Ikea-style look. The rooms are basically white/white, all furnishings white, splashes of color. No phones in rooms. Safety boxes. Yes, the AC system is a bit louder than one might like, but it did not prevent me from sleeping or otherwise chilling in the room [like how much time do you spend in your room?] SEE PHOTOS. MANAGEMENT is always on-site, is there to respond to any concerns. Is the current general manager gay? No, but does that really matter? Some staff are gay, others are not. There is a long time bartender who is so handsome/sexy/flirty all the guys love him (and many non locals assume he is gay). And yeah, he is straight. He makes great drinks, remembers your name, doesn't ignore you, and isn't that what's important? Guys, Let's try to get away from what I call "the gay ghetto mentality", where everyone we deal with needs to be gay, and if not, they are somehow less than us? Hmm, sounds like some form of discrimination to me. Yes, I know its a lengthy review, but I wanted to address some of the issues raised by others, and trued to be comprehensive. See pictures I've posted, I have not been shy showing the "feel of the place" in a variety of settings. NOTE: I have no financial interests in this establishment, do not know the owners, do not socialize with the management or staff, and did not receive any encouragement to submit this review. I'm just being as direct here as I am with all my reviews.

Food was great, would definitely recommend the croquettes! The staff and Juan, the owner, were personable and welcoming! Music was upbeat and atmosphere was clean and inviting! 5+ stars!

This use to be my favorite hotel in Lauderdale....not any more. There is no longer bartender service by the pool during the day. The back pool has a chained notice that the city has closed it. The workout room is closed and they told me there is a similar one on a sister facility several blocks away. The spa is only by request and they no longer serve breakfast by the pool. And most unfortunately, the comfortable gay vibe is pretty much gone. The hotel was bought by an investor which apparently bought up most of the block. So sad.

Me and my girlfriend stayed here for her birthday...and we had a blast! Hoken and Jeff were amazing...always attentive to what we needed. Our room was brand new, you could smell the new furniture...very modern and clean, loved it! The Bloody Marys are D Lish and the bartender Andres (i believe that was his name) very nice. And finally, the Sunday tea dance is sooooo much fun...it's mostly guys but we had a blast! The boys were so much fun...Music was really good, a good music. Sooooo again...Clean/Modern Rooms, Great Location, Great Staff, Great Tea Dance on Sundays! We will definitely be back to this resort. Thanks Hoken and Jeff!

The resort was very clean, and every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful. Check-in was quick and easy, which set the tone for a relaxing stay. The beach-view balcony room offered beautiful views and was a great place to unwind. While the room was clean and comfortable, some of the furniture and fixtures were starting to show their age and felt a little rough around the edges. One of the best perks was that the resort fee included two beach chairs and an umbrella each day. There are also plenty of food and drink options throughout the resort, making it easy to grab anything from a quick bite to a full meal without leaving the property.

House keeping was very timely and kept our room tidy for days. Dinning on the resort expensive especially with kids! Margaritaville restaurant for breakfast 13$ for each kid and 25-28$ for adults...we quickly turned and left after being told that. They do have a wash room on second floor as well as a gym. Washroom detergent 1.25$ per small box so like one load. Dryers free. Cons: Billing...let's just say you want to check out at the front desk to make sure it's correct. There were some charges we were not aware of that needed attention. I feel like fine print is not on your bill or never mentioned. We had to dispute some things that took forever to correct!. Maybe return but in no rush.

There are no Bonvoy elite perks- though titanium, they didn't do anything special for elite status. The pool & service were fantastic though! We liked the pool table in the lobby but it's quite worn in :) The location can't be beat on Fort Lauderdale beach bc it's so central to everything. We had an intercostal balcony room that was spacious & perfect, and seems to have been updated within the last few years. The stocked mini fridge was a letdown bc it was broken & maintenance couldn't fix it so they brought in another, which was great but took up space. The service from Rodney on the pool deck was wonderful, he was so professional & still went out of his way to make our days great. The burger was delicious but a little too undercooked for Joey. We loved the hot tubs! Because there was a huge F1 conference (sold-out hotel but everyone working), the pool deck was empty so that was lovely :) All in all, it was a great stay -- a few minor details & quite pricey but we really enjoyed our time!

Not every resort, in fact few if any, would do this. This, to me, speaks volumes of the resort's management, and their willingness to address concerns. I had moved on, but I was surprised, and very pleased and grateful that they followed through on this. ----------- Sorry for the long review post, but if you're planning on staying here, I urge you to read until the end. My wife and I are local to the Ft Lauderdale area, and wanting to spend a couple of days at a resort by the beach, we were drawn to Lago Mar. The prices seemed reasonable, having free parking and no resort fee, so on the surface, it was already a cut above any worthwhile resort you'll find along the Southeast Fl coast. It's not until you check in that you discover that they do not allow personal beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, drinks, nor food in the common areas, pool, and beach. Naturally, if you want protection from the sun, you'll need to opt to rent the umbrella and chairs, which will run you $32, and $10-15 each for the chairs. You will also be socked with a 20% "service charge". Total $66. So much for no resort fee! Now, our stay was marred by poor weather. On the full day we were going to be there, the weather appeared to be clearing, and even the weather service said as much. So, forgetting about the food/drinks/cooler part, which didn't matter much to me, I opted to rent the umbrella and chairs, despite having brought our own. But after one hour of use, we had to abandon the beach due to the relentless rain! Now, I know and understand that the resort cannot, and should not, be responsible for the weather turning bad, but I decided to call the front desk to see if they could make an accommodation in this case. I was told that the beach equipment is handled by a 3rd party, and I could try and talk to them. So down I went, only to discover they had left early for the day. So, I contacted the front desk again, only to be, what felt like, chided for trying to see if the resort could make another accommodation, like a food credit for breakfast credit, or something. Nothing of the sort. It seemed like I got my hand slapped!!! Now, to be fair, the resort as a whole, including our room, was clean, spotless, and comfortable. The staff is more than friendly. Based on these elements alone, their high rating is warranted. But there are other things, that unfortunately, are not discoverable until you actually stay there. For this reason, I'm rating them a 3/5, and will likely not be staying there again.

I'll start by saying this has been my favorite place for the last ten years. I loved the low key…read morevibe that really allowed families to enjoy themselves. It didn't have a cookie cutter Marriott vibe, with ridiculous rules. That was until our last visit. Apparently they have a new pool/beach management company. This has increased beach rental fees which wasn't our issue. While it's pretty crappy to offer beach front property without offering beach chairs, that is common among other hotels. This wasn't the old Lago Mar but they've joined the ranks of other hotels and ruined their vibe. The main issues started when we left our tubes at our chairs and came back to three of them gone. I looked around and noticed a staff member deflate and throw a different tube (not ours) away. When I asked where ours were they pretended to not know about it. They found one but not the other two until I asked them to empty the trash can full of tubes. Ours were in there, with ten others they had popped intentionally and threw away. They said we had been warned, which wasn't the case. They lied about doing it and told me to talk to the front desk if I was unhappy. The front desk reassured us that the pool manager would make it right. It was three days of bs with the manager of this company (which they now outsource) who refused to make it right. They offered a complimentary beach chair. All I wanted was a $50 credit to cover the cost of the three inflatables. The hotel manager got involved and credited the value of the tubes but this was after three days of drama. They apologized profusely, but when you outsource key staff, you're responsible for their actions. According to the new pool company, pool floats and tubes are not allowed and this is strictly, albeit inconsistently enforced. We used tubes for the first three days and never heard a single thing. While ours were destroyed, there were literally three women floating in tubes in the pool. While the hotel says this has been their policy forever, and it is noted on a sign, this has never been enforced. Up until recently, their own gift shop sold floats, even when the sign said it wasn't allowed. They also even blew them up for you at the hut. Now I'd be fine if they said they weren't allowed and were enforcing it. But to never say the tubes are an issue, wait until we walk away, take them, pop them and then lie about it is absurd. It ruined the vibe of the trip. What is the point of a family pool if families can't float in a tube and chill out? There is an adults only pool that can easily be a tube free environment. Furthermore, as a guest, if I had taken anyones property, damaged it, threw it away and lied about it, I'd be held accountable. It's a real shame because we love everything else about this resort. The bar staff, Kelly, Chuck and Mitch are amazing. I can't say enough about how wonderful they are. The cleaning crew works their butts off, the hotel staff have always been accommodating. I can't say that we'll return as a family as long as this pool company is outsourced. I noted quite a few recent reviews that said things had changed and wished it wasn't true. But it was. This place held nothing but amazing family memories for us until this time. I hope changes are made and it returns to the low key resort we all loved.
