The Royal Park Hotel is marketed as a rustic, old school hotel with lots of charm and character, which essentially means it's an old friggin hotel. Don't get me wrong, the hotel staff is friendly and the rooms are decent in size (compared to other London hotels) but I could not get over the fact that I was being transported back to the Victorian era and paying top dollar prices while at my stay at the Royal Park.
Pros:
- Friendly staff and provided a bottle of Champagne for our anniversary. Very thoughtful and appreciated!
- Decent sized rooms. Not too big and not too small. Closet was very spacious and provided a desk for work. The safe was pretty neat as you use your credit card as a key to open it.
- Breakfast was amazing. Due to jet lag, we woke up quite early and didn't feel like trekking outside for something to eat. The croissants, bread and English breakfast were well worth the price. We had a special offer for a 2 person buffet breakfast for £22, amazing value for what we received.
- Sandwiched between two tube stations: Lancaster Gate and Paddington Station. If you are flying in/out of HTR, just take the Heathrow express from Paddington station and you're good to go!
Cons:
- The building is flat out old. Wood and paint is chipping, the walls and windows are dusty, the bathrooms are beginning to mold, carpet is grimy and the heater was completely busted, which was torture during November in London. I would not stay here based on this alone. If you care about tidiness and cleanliness the Royal Park is NOT your hotel, stay elsewhere. Also, they use actual metal keys to get into your room. Takes a bit of getting used to, to unlock your door. It's cute but very antiquated. No one wants to lug around heavy metal keys when you're out and about, so the front desk will keep them safe for you until you come back.
- Food options are sparse. This may be subjective, but you aren't very close to any good food options within walking distance. I'm surprised how nearby restaurants are able to stay in business. Most of the Italian and middle-eastern places were completely empty during rush-hour times. We only found 1 spot for food and it was almost half a mile away. (Beany Green, in case you're interested)
-Walls are paper thin. As we were jetlagged, we took showers at random times during the day. As late as 12AM and as early as 4:30AM. We felt bad for the people above/next to us. We could hear muffled conversations from people near us, guests walking and flushing toilets. If you are a light sleeper, I would avoid this hotel.
- Not really that close to popular attractions. The only thing it's close to is Hyde Park. You will have to take the tube everywhere. I'm sure that's true for many hotels in London, but for the price you're paying at the Royal Park, it might be better to get a more up-to-date hotel near trendier spots like Central London or the Covent Garden area.
Overall, this place gets 2 stars. It's easy enough to get to and the staff is friendly, but other than that, there just isn't anything going for it. Also, the hotel is old and dirty. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel. read more
