Dan was super friendly in the family…read morehome/museum & tasting room, and Distiller John Pogue led our small group of three through his family's historic craft distilling operation, which overlooks the Ohio River from the bluffs above Maysville, Kentucky. This is the birthplace of bourbon. John Pogue is a trained geologist, who turned his talents and knowledge toward the family business of distilling. The beautiful focus of the property is the 1845 home of John's ancestors, which is on the US Department of the Interior National Register of Historic Places. Old Pogue "Masters Select" has appeared on the Wine Enthusiast "Top 50 Spirits" list. One of the "secrets" of Kentucky Bourbon, John explained, is the unique limestone aquifer of the region. It contains no iron, through which the water filters. Be sure to book your tour in advance online. The product of this small batch craft distillery is to my understanding only available on-site. Another tip is to pick up a copy of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Passport and Field Guide Book. It is available online or in person. Tons of interesting information about distilleries in Kentucky, if you plan on visiting others as well. Visits, and completing the entire trail, unlock special rewards!

We came upon this place; not sure why we haven't heard of it before. Sad that our first visit was during this crazy time but we will be back! Great place! We purchased a bottle of the sweet blackberry- sweets are not normally our thing but this seemed like a good bottle to share. Purchased a couple more bottles to take home. The owner was VERY nice!! This is a great spot for the community:)

In the front there is a cute bookstore that also features local artwork and a few artisan crafts. In the back part of the building is a small, but well stocked bar, and tables where they also serve food. We ordered a bourbon slush- which was refreshing and delicious. Also had a yummy Reuben sandwich served with potato chips. Our server was excellent! She was attentive and friendly. She gave us the scoop on the area and told us about upcoming local events. On the way out I checked out their selection of books. An interesting one on the life of Rudolf Diesel (yup, the engine and fuel is named after him) caught my eye. I picked it up for one of my summer reading books. What a very cool concept- It's definitely worth a stop.
