Overall I find that the Directions Training team are very pleasant and the instructors are quite knowledgeable. Since I was new to the whole WIOA Process, my choices for the above coursework were not really the best for me; in retrospect, I should have selected a different training course. I place most of the responsibility on myself, and yet I think that a more thorough consultation from both the WIOA and the Directions Team would have yielded for me a better understanding of the program and I could have better utilized the program to my benefit. In retrospect I can see that everyone just assumed that we as students already knew everything that we needed to know in order to make the selections. In addition everything just moved a neck break speed and I was a bit overwhelmed. No doubt the skills and training that I have received will be quite valuable in my career. My advice to anyone in WIOA and ready to select a Training Provider: ASK MORE QUESTIONS and don't make your decisions until you fully understand how everything works. Having said that, I would wholeheartedly recommend Directions to my friends and family. And Finally - I feel that the classes should have been two weeks as opposed to one and should move at a more controlled pace with more interaction and pre-testing / evaluation. I was schocked when i showed up for class and we were the remote location and the teacher was in OakBrook. I would have rather gone to oakbrook and been with the teacher. The teacher spent most of his time with the class that was in oakbrook and we were left out of a big part of the class. When we all asked to go to oakbrook to be with the teacher we were told we could and then were told that they didn't have any more room. For the amount of money my company spent on this training I would have expected better or at least been given advanced notification of the remote session so I could have signed up for another class with a teacher.

Instructor Mike Fair was and is awesome! Super patient, funny and witty but most importantly he explains everything in great detail and answers all of your questions. If he needs to, he will go in depth in a particular segment and makes sure that everyone (us students taking the course) understand the material. Location isn't far from 355 or 290. They are excited about the content and interested in their students. I really liked having access to the class content in advance which allowed me to research the subject before the class started. The worksheets are helpful when building your final project. I intend to take another class in future. I would recommend taking the social media marketing class to anyone interested in wanting to learn more than basic user knowledge.

I will say that not everything has run smoothly though. There have been some items that seem to have been left out of our initial conversations. When I attempted to work through them with the staff, they spoke to me as if I should have known. I was quite disappointed with them that they treated me as though it was my mistake when clearly they left information out. I would only recommend Directions to someone with the caveat to ask a ton of questions. Ask questions about things you may not think are important. Ask questions that you might ask a college/university if you were taking out student loans and taking classes with them. Rescheduling will happen. Be prepared for it! It will be difficult to work some of the dates around other classes that have been scheduled. Be prepared to be frustrated!

McCrone is a non-profit research institute that was founded in 1960 for a rather specific purpose:…read moreto enhance the utility and applications of light and electron microscopy in all areas of science. In other words, they're all about microscopes. McCrone offers courses, conferences and publications germane to the training of researchers to better apply microscopy to their work. This is unique, because most research institutes focus on an area of study rather than a technique, but McCrone desires instead to educate scientists in how to work better with microscopy and they do this in the same humble building they've been in since their founding, near some of Chicago's most-respected medical research and clinical institutions but seperate, independent, and while cutting-edge, still quaint (in a good way) in their dedication to the noble microsope. What McCrone does is really a national service: microscopy is still in a process of evolution and involves complex techniques that are best passed by mentor to student in a lab setting or, as McCrone does, taught in specific coursework. That type of coursework isn't something you get in most dedicated graduate programs be these in microbiology, neuroscience, materials engineering or whatever else. Having a dedicated institution offering this training and backing it with decades of expertise is a real benefit to science in general.

The East Village Youth Program is a tutoring and mentoring organization for lower-income, mostly…read moreminority middle school and high school students who would like to go to college. The program starts them off early so that they know how to navigate the Chicago Public School system and do what it takes to prepare for college in terms of entrance exams, etc., and then helps them through college so that they can be successful. I've worked with the organization for a couple of years now, and it is one of the most worthwhile things that I've done in my life. They are still quite small, and so you can really see the impact that you have by donating your time and your money. I highly recommend becoming involved as a tutor or mentor, or if you can, as a board member or donor. They also have lots of great fundraising events that attract a young, hip crowd (the last was an "old school homecoming dance" with spiked punch and 80s/90s karaoke and commemorative photos -- hilarious). I'm helping to organize the spring benefit, which is May 3, 2007, at Gibson's and has a Kentucky derby theme. Mark your calendar! This is a fantastic organization! I've volunteered there for three years and, if you're looking to…read moregive some time to a wonderful cause and meet great people in the process, I HIGHLY recommend East Village. As a tutor for the past few years, got to know the EVYP community quite well. I worked primarily with 6th-8th grade students in small groups (most recently, with a delightful group of 6th grad boys) and they were always wonderful. The kids attend EVYP programs regularly, which are highly structured, and are lucky to receive support from all sides - volunteers, staff, and families alike. They definitely benefit from regular access to their tutors, as the kids are in schools that, sadly, fall short. I've seen assignments from teachers that made no sense (and I used to teach...) and, unfortunately, the students often do not receive the type of in-school support that they need. As such, EVYP fills a critical need in the community. Also, it's worth noting that the kids' parents tend to be amazingly supportive, involved, and present. I've worked in nonprofits for years and am continuously impressed by EVYP's contributions, commitment, and vision. If you're thinking about volunteering with kids - whether as a mentor, tutor, or otherwise - I cannot recommend this organization enough! p.s., Added bonus: they have super-fun parties for volunteers a few times a year. Only problem the Level I class (digital…read moreprojector) was terrible, the Lumens output for the projector was crappy and couldn't see the screen very good (even on a cloudy day). My Level II class was way better, as I personally asked for a different classroom that had large screen monitors inside it. This made a world of difference. The instructor was awesome (as he taught both classes, and provided the perfect amount of personal knowledge on the topic as he navigated through the training. FMC charges enough money to provide a better digital projector for their students, thus making a better class environment. Therefore I'm only giving 3 stars.
