This area was referred to as Chloe back then and the only mention of Manchester was the gravel road that ran passed this store. Long gone are the dust trails and the sounds of gravel flying as our first cars barreled down the backroads trying to get nowhere fast. The rice canal and herds of cows chewing their cud are long gone and the concrete drives cover the dirt road entrances to what once was just a pasture filled with livestock. You can get your fuel here, your smokes and a 40 oz or two if you'd like - along with a slice of Hunt's Pizza, a bbq sandwich, lottery tickets and just about anything else you can think of. The service was fine, the pay at the pump receipts were empty as well as the receipt dispenser inside so I guess it's a work in progress, but it's a store and it's convenient so it's all good as far as I'm concerned...

They melt in your mouth, and they taste like no donut I've ever tasted. I wish I could properly describe the heavenly taste of Nelson's donuts. Please just take my word for it, they're the best donut you'll ever eat. I've sampled a whole lotta' donuts, across several cities/states for nearly 40 years, and I can easily say Nelson's has the best donuts ever ! My youngest daughter and I make a special trip to Nelson's, a couple of times each week during the summer, and 1-2 x's a month during the school year. She looks forward to it, & everyone there treats us like family. Hearing the news that Nelson caught on fire, recently, actually made me feel emotional. Plenty of parking and great, new facility. We missed the tour, buy I think it was $10 and includes tasting. We paid $5 for the tasting and at 10am we were the only ones at the distillery. We got to try all 7 rums. They are made on site and almost all their flavorings are local, e.g. Satsuma grown locally. The rums aren't super sweet like Bacardi and had some depth. I enjoyed their spiced rum, think less sweet Captain Morgan's. We bought a couple of bottles, about $18 each. The staff was really friendly and nice. They double-bubble wrapped our bottles for easy shipping in luggage. The bottles came in super cute bags that can double as gift bags. Nice bathrooms. They also bottle and sell a whiskey for another distillery. I think it was Kentucky Owl.

I've been gone from the area for a number of years actually more than a few decades so the first…read moretime I saw a Rouse Market here I was just as impressed as I was when they turned the narrow two lane Highway 378 into the massive expressway it is today, for years there were two places to buy groceries in MB there was Market Basket and Sonny's (closed decades ago) which was directly across the street from the now ailing Market Basket who's smoked boudin is legendary and may be one of the few reasons the faithful still trade there - yes it's great there are now choices and even better that there is now competition. Now let me give credit where credits due - Rouses Market is a level above anything in town well at least in Moss Bluff being everyone here still has a Lake Charles address. Oh yea there Walmart Market Place with its parking lot filled 24/7 and then there's Amazon the store that will eventually crush them all as soon as the old touchy feely generation goes to the promise land, but until that time you have to experience a Rouses Market its Louisiana through and through. I mean tell me where you can match the line up I observed today e.g. fried chicken seasoned with crawfish boil seasoning, fresh turtle meat, fresh Louisiana crawfish tails, roux, jars of gumbo, étouffée, shrimp with their head still on and a fricking "king cake" oh yea I could go on and on and on but you get the picture or you just don't care because you stopped in for a loaf of French bread and a Yoo-hoo. I came here looking for something to throw on the grill and found it, the butcher cut me four one inch and a quarter thick ribeyes that any carnivore would crawl through three miles of cypress swamp just to light the grill their cooked on - no seriously these were some serious steaks. But wait one of the things I love about Rouses is that they use "locally sourced" everything when it's available and the quality meets their high standards. If some of this sounds familiar it should for some of you - it's exactly what was said when Market Basket was being built decades ago...

We had about $200 of groceries and the one behind us has about $100 maybe more. After unloading onto the belt we were all told "only cash" by the poor cashiers that had that "deer in the headlights" look. This is the second time my husband had this happen in the last few months.
