Rouses either needs a new IT department in Lake Charles(Nelson) or a totally new computer checkout system. My husband and I are in our 70s. We had about $200 of groceries and the one behind us has about $100 maybe more. After unloading onto the belt we were all told "only cash" by the poor cashiers that had that "deer in the headlights" look. This is the second time my husband had this happen in the last few months. I've been gone from the area for a number of years actually more than a few decades so the first time I saw a Rouse Market here I was just as impressed as I was when they turned the narrow two lane Highway 378 into the massive expressway it is today, for years there were two places to buy groceries in MB there was Market Basket and Sonny's (closed decades ago) which was directly across the street from the now ailing Market Basket who's smoked boudin is legendary and may be one of the few reasons the faithful still trade there - yes it's great there are now choices and even better that there is now competition. Now let me give credit where credits due - Rouses Market is a level above anything in town well at least in Moss Bluff being everyone here still has a Lake Charles address. Oh yea there Walmart Market Place with its parking lot filled 24/7 and then there's Amazon the store that will eventually crush them all as soon as the old touchy feely generation goes to the promise land, but until that time you have to experience a Rouses Market its Louisiana through and through. I mean tell me where you can match the line up I observed today e.g. fried chicken seasoned with crawfish boil seasoning, fresh turtle meat, fresh Louisiana crawfish tails, roux, jars of gumbo, étouffée, shrimp with their head still on and a fricking "king cake" oh yea I could go on and on and on but you get the picture or you just don't care because you stopped in for a loaf of French bread and a Yoo-hoo. I came here looking for something to throw on the grill and found it, the butcher cut me four one inch and a quarter thick ribeyes that any carnivore would crawl through three miles of cypress swamp just to light the grill their cooked on - no seriously these were some serious steaks. But wait one of the things I love about Rouses is that they use "locally sourced" everything when it's available and the quality meets their high standards. There's not many good grocery stores that we've found in Louisiana. Rouses are one of the better choices. Be advised that not all Rouses are alike. Ask the locals on where they grocery shop at. You'll more than likely get the same answer we do, that s the shop at different stores for different items. Hope that helps. read more

Love this place!!!! Lots of specialty local Louisiana items to look at and try. Many items you find here you can not find outside of the state of Louisiana. Very clean spacious store with great selection and variety of products. The bakery had so many desserts and with lots of options in size from personal desserts to desserts to feed the family. Awesome super market!! I think a grocery market can tell you a great deal about the culture of a city or area you are visiting. Rouse's Market is a great way to learn more about southwest Louisiana. This is easily the worst Rouses I've ever been to. Check the date on your meat because they'll sell them past due. We've had one spoil on us only to find out that it was already expired before we even purchased it. You live and you learn. Even bought cucumbers that were yellow on the inside. I don't trust this place and neither should anyone else. read more

I live 50 miles from Lake Charles, La., And I thought I'd see what meat was on sale, while I was down here. 3 times doing this, and I've had rude cashiers. The last one actually frowned at me when I showed her my snap card-like she doesn't have have one- The hell with them. I've been waiting quite some time to write this review, most new places you walk into are great right off the bat and it's usually a long downhill spiral afterwards. I was surely hoping that certainly wouldn't be the case here, but unfortunately it seems like that is exactly what's happening. Firstly, they should be ashamed of their meat section. While at first glance it looks to be amazing with an extensive variety of meats, all of that doesn't do it any justice when I can walk through each time and count 15 to 20 items that are out of date. I'm not talkin about items I had to dig through to find, these are items right in the front you don't even have to look very hard. Secondly their prices seem to have only skyrocketed since opening on just about every item. While this is true with most grocery stores in our area it has had a significant impact in Rouses sites in particular for some reason. Third, the one thing I hope they would never stray away from seems to be happening now more often than not. That is they used to have cashiers at every register waiting to check you out and lines were never long. The last three times we went in the Moss Bluff location there were cashiers standing around talkin amongst other cashiers while they watched one cashier check out with a line of 10 plus people in it. So there you have it, lackluster management from the top down, meats that are not checked thoroughly and daily combined with prices that would demand a much better experience but instead fall quite short... Update 2/9/19 Well it would seem nothing has changed since my previous update as far as the out-of-date meat products go. I easily found six out of date items in the chicken section alone that were at least one day out of date and front stacked. I'm not sure what's going on at this establishment or this particular store but there seems to be a major failure in the meat department. read more
