I recently adopted a rescue dog who was in a bad hoarding situation and he was terrified of…read moreabsolutely everything and had lots of issues. I had him for four VERY LONG weeks. Things were awful. I was miserable, frankly depressed, and felt like I'd made one of the biggest mistakes of my life adopting Fred. I love dogs, and thought long and hard before adopting one. Despite that, it took all I had to not send him back...something I never thought I'd consider. Three weeks in I was at my wit's end and literally about to text the foster mom who had Fred before me, just minutes before my free consultation with Tara at The Dog Wizard. Tara talked me off a ledge and told me she's dealt with extremely difficult cases like Fred before - one in particular who is now thriving today. So I gave her a chance and enrolled him in the 3 week program. She offered to keep him longer if needed without additional charge if she felt he needed it. You could tell she wanted to help him (and me) and cares deeply about the dogs she works with. Long story short, Fred spent 6 weeks there (just to show you how much help he needed)! I got Fred back today and I am absolutely shocked at the change in him. I don't want this post to get too long, but he doesn't constantly shake anymore, he'll go up to strangers and act comfortable around them, he's less anxious around other dogs, he knows and follows commands, he doesn't dart away from me all the time, and just seems so much more comfortable, confident, and relaxed overall. I honestly was prepared to still take him back to the rescue, that's how bad things were (I felt very hopeless). Not only do I not see that happening now, but I see hope for lots of bonding in our future. And Tara offers ongoing support after training - group classes, continued training, etc. I can't say enough good things about Tara and her staff at The Dog Wizard! If you're hesitating, don't! I promise you it's worth every penny. The picture is Fred resting his head on my belly tonight. I felt so at ease knowing my two dog babies were well cared for during the 14 day Board & Train. I received a very detailed and thorough check-in call every 3 days while they were gone. They posted photos daily - so I never felt out of touch as to what was going on. At the end of our 14 days, we had a one on one training that has prepared me to continue growing my dog's new skills. I feel so confident moving forward taking both dogs out for long walks and to social gatherings. I look forward to many more group training sessions and hangs with the team. Our dog is super attached and does not like to be left alone. The staff here was so sweet and attentive from the moment we walked in. They asked about special requests with grooming and any special needs. The grooming only took about 1.5 hours. When we came to pick her up she looked so happy. They did a great job with the grooming!! I was so impressed by her perfect paws. Being a new single dog dad scared me. I've been waiting 10 years to get a dog. I've always wanted a…read morepuppy but the start to this journey really scared me. Especially since I'm doing this alone. Mikaela at Horizon has really been there for us and helping me to be a supportive dog parent. Bohdi gets compliments all the time what a good dog he is. He's an English Retriever and I've had him since he was 8 weeks. Mikaela taught me the importance of patience and was really there for me in my time of need when I felt like I was doing something wrong (I tend to overthink and be hard on myself). She would give me guidance and ways to be more patient and to also understand that he is just being a puppy and he is trying to figure things out. She helped me to keep going at a steady and learning patience. The Canine Connection School is also really amazing and I love it. I just wish it had a section for new puppy owners or just puppies in general. Like a section of how to start off with success with a new puppy and how to stay strong during this hard time. Mikaela taught me the importance of check ins, how to be Bohdi's advocate, Bohdi's body language cues, and helping me with crate training techniques. Her guidance through Bohdi's fear period has also helped immensely. I know that going through Horizon may be a bit expensive, but this is an investment that you will have forever. It's like paying for college, but this is going into knowledge of having a bond with your pup and having a better understanding of how to be there for them. One of my favorite things I've learned from Horizon is that your dog is not an accessory. He is your family member. You are his whole world. Be your dogs advocate. Bohdi is now 23 weeks old. We will most likely go back for another session when he is 1 years old or later. Just to check in and see how we are both doing. I'm continuously learning and I count on Horizon to be there.
