It could use a bit more parking, however, I did get a decent enough spot. This is not a huge riverwalk, but it is still pretty cool. When I say it is not big, I mean that it is very small. It's small enough that you can walk it in a matter of a few minutes. All in all, I enjoyed my time at this cool little riverwalk. I can guarantee that if I lived in the area, I would be here on a pretty regular basis. If you find yourself in Milton, Florida, go check this out. I am confident that you will appreciate this and will enjoy your time here. Overall, I will give it five stars as a rating and it definitely has earned my recommendation. Go check it out.

A new park, Bagdad Mill isn't established yet. When I stopped by yesterday, there were quite a few…read moreworkers doing...work, I guess. Taxpayer-funded work rarely looks like actual work. The grass is trying to take root, but there are a lot of bare, muddy patches scattered about. The park consists of a single large open area, transected by a paved walking path near the north end. The walking path also circles the perimeter of the entire park. There are numerous informational plaques set at regular intervals around the track that tell you about the history of the area and ecology. There are bike racks, benches, picnic tables, and charcoal grills spread out around the park, and numerous water spigots, in case you get thirsty. There's a small T-shaped wooden observation deck that juts out over the murky depths of the Blackwater River, although there's little to actually observe. The deck is too high to ever be used as a dock for boats, which is a poor design--the park would make a wonderful respite stop for a picnic during an afternoon of boating on the river. Just a few trees large enough to provide shade, as of yet. I can feature the park as a great venue for festivals and concerts, but it'd be BYOShade during the summer. Go check it out, walk around the track, and get some knowledge of the history of the area. It's nice to have an additional destination for a relaxing read.

This dog park is located on the road that goes past the sonic and ollie's, up the hill to a four…read moreway, and then take a left. It is pretty bare bones for a dog park, and it seems as if there hasn't been much updating in years. They have a side for smaller dogs and a side for larger breed dogs; however, people love to bring in their beloved chihuahua and then proceed to get angry when a mastiff tries to play with it.. common sense here people. They have an "in ground" water bowl with a faucet for the dogs on both sides. For the dogs they have three concrete tubes to...go through? They have a incline board for them to walk over, and then one plywood board with a hole cut in the middle for a dog to jump through. Other than that it's just a larger open space for dogs to run in a caged in area. Would be nice for them to add some more dog related activities into the park. There are two benches with covering to sit under for the humans. As well as a bag dispenser for you to ACTUALLY pick up after your dog..*cough cough* Also.. there is no lighting after sunset so beware..

Funded locally and even more impressive because Milton is absolutely not a big city. The memorial is a short walk from the center of the city and is located along the riverwalk next to the Blackwater River. If you are already here or just passing through on I-10, stop by and see. There are fewer and fewer swing bridges remaining, so I made a slight detour off I-10 to pass…read morethrough downtown Milton and visit the bridge. Unlike bascule bridges (from the French term for balance scale) which lift one or more spans, swing or "twist" bridges rotate around a vertical axis to allow water traffic to pass. In Milton, the Blackwater River Swing Bridge only carries a single track of railroad traffic. Spanning the Blackwater River, the bridge is believed to have been constructed around 1882. It is of the "through truss" design. It is easy to photograph from the park just to the north (upstream). Other views are rather overgrown and in Florida, near slow moving water, I wouldn't recommend trekking through it. I was not able to catch the bridge opening despite handing out for short while though I did spot a train crossing the bridge. You'll hear the train whistle for a good few minutes as it has many crossings nearby. Early in the morning is best to catch the river at its smoothest for a good photo. This is a hiking trail like walking the 20 yards to my mailbox is an undue burden on my endurance…read more The entire trail is only about 1/2 mile long, yet it is pretty nice. It's more like an unpaved road that hasn't been driven on in many years...probably because that is exactly what it is. River Road was a frequent hang-out on weekend nights when I was in high school. It was nothing but dirt, mud, bonfires, beer, and making out with chicks. Now it is actually quite a serene and nice park, with paved roads, pavilions, benches, etc. The new addition farther in has even nicer views of the river, with older trees and great landscaping. You'll find the trailhead at the end of the road, where the road circles around a parking island. The first half is very straight and there isn't much to look at. Immediately before the first turn, there is a short side trail (and when I say "short," I mean about 15 yards) to a small landing where you can peep the bayou and try to avoid being gnawed upon by gators and skeeters. I didn't see any of either, but it's still fairly chilly. Get past the first right-hand turn in the trail and you'll have the water on your left. Good views, if you like fresh water stuff. It's called the Blackwater River due to all of the tannins in it, which make the water very dark. The Loch Ness monster could be a foot under the surface and you'd never know it. I used to swim in that water 30 years ago, but if you started throwing handfuls of $100 bills in it today, I'd wish them bon voyage...no way I'd get in that soup. A couple of minutes later, you are at the end of the trail, met with a steel gate at the road and entrance to Whiting Landing, the Navy boat and recreation park. If you don't have military ID, you can't enter here, so turn around and walk back to your vehicle. It's not a sweat-inducing struggle or a cardio workout, but it was a break in my day to reflect on life and commune with nature. I saw only one other person, a lady walking her wet dog. There are several nice covered benches on which to rest, but if you are so thoroughly out of shape that you need to sit down more than once, you probably shouldn't be risking heart failure in such a secluded place. Although...I had strong cell coverage during the stroll (Verizon). This would be a great place to walk your dog(s), BTW. I didn't see any wildlife, nor did I see any signs of wildlife, but I'd wager that there are critters in them woods and marshes. If you are looking for a brief respite from the fast-paced life of downtown Milton, hop over the bridge, turn left onto River Road, and earn your notch for strolling the Old River Trail.
