Schools of fish cruise by, anglers line the rails pulling up mackerel and pompano, and every once in a while you'll see something bigger glide through the blue. I've seen rays, sharks, and more fish than I could count swimming right below my feet. It feels like standing above a living aquarium. The original pier here dates back to the 1930s, but the modern one was rebuilt stronger in 1998 after storms took the earlier versions. Today it draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, and it's easy to see why. The beach is bright white, the water is emerald green, and the whole place has that laid-back Gulf magic. Captain Daniel beelined from Shaggy's to the inlet and then out into the very tranquil Gulf for a great time. Fish of the day: a large amber jack. Runner up: a chunky remora with the coolest head. Also nice: a red-lipped lipstick fish. But the red snappers were plentiful as well, doing the food chain thing courtesy of the smaller catch. The season was open and apparently someone told the snapper. Average weight: eight or more pounds. Ambiance: a great boat on the open waters. A clever captain. All good. Service: Captain Daniel knew his spots and was an encyclopedia on marine life. We even saw about a dozen dolphin. Fi(ni)shing lines: this was our second time with Hot Spots and there will be more. I can toss his toy into the water, and he joyfully retrieves it every time. The park also has scenic trails and picnic benches, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful outing. Just a heads-up: the path down to the water can be a bit slippery and muddy, so wear sturdy shoes and skip your best outfit. Bug spray is also a must, especially if you visit during warmer months. I'd recommend going during off-peak hours for a more tranquil experience, but even when there are more people, everyone has been friendly, and it never feels overcrowded. Incredible! We frequently see jellyfish floating around. Some days are calm and gentle seas. Another day we witnessed a storm role in. Most recently, the gulf was rocking! Big swells and waves, so reminiscent of the Atlantic. The end of the pier is always busy with fisherman casting lines and families catching together. It's a clear tradition for many people. It's energetic and fun to watch. $1 to walk the pier is worth it. I imagine they use it to maintain the pier because this concrete beast is substantial. The miles of paved highway is surrounded with white sugar sand beaches and towering dunes and beautiful water with lots of parking and not so many people at least the day of our visit. I guess this would be considered a barrier island but regardless of its designation it's one of the most beautiful stretch of beaches that I've come across and I've seen plenty - if you're planning a visit be prepared to spend the day the memories you make here will last you a lifetime, there aren't a lot of amenities if you consider the vastness of this place and please pack out everything you pack in this is one of the most pristine pieces of land I've visited and deserves the respect from all that visit. If there is such a thing as a bucket list item this definitely qualifies and if you're lucky enough to be able to spend some time here just do it - it exceeded all my expectations and I hope to return again soon...

There are folks who fish from the pier and you may do so but the pier charge is a bit more for that. It was fun to see the anglers wetting their lines while we strolled by. I believe you can even rent fishing gear right on the spot if you're traveling and don't have it with you. For us, we just enjoyed the peace and serenity of strolling down the pier and then doing a little ocean gazing. Get to it!

People walked by with all their catches and everything. We each paid the $2 to walk anyway, and the entire pier is lined with people fishing! We did go during Memorial Day weekend, so I understand this is a busier time, but wow. It made for a smelly walk. Only the area near the shore had space for taking photos, so we were off the pier in like 10 minutes. Going for the sunset seemed great until actually being there, but we did learn from the signs on the pier that they would have a firework show, which we came back for. The firework show was about 5-ish minutes long, but it was great! They go all out at the end, so there's a lot of fireworks going off.

Nick took us to multiple spots and handled everything. Provided ice for beer, instructions for rookies, help landing the fish, and plenty of photo opportunities! When we got back to the dock he filleted the the fish and got us on our way. He knew where to find fish, kept us busy the entire 4 hour trip... and he is a veteran... support good guys like this!!
