Casual, cafe-style Indian restos are unusual, and this is what makes ChaiShai a winner. They have a variety of drinks, snacks and sweets, but also feature mains, if you want to start with a spicy starter and transit to something more substantial. I rarely give 1-star reviews, this is going to be only the 9th out of 358 as of this writing…read more However, after six mornings of breakfast at Commodore during a week-long stay at the Honeyrose, I've got to call it like it is: the service here is impressively terrible. It started off mildly annoying. On day one, I just wanted a croissant. Turns out that's not included in the "free" bonvoy/marriott breakfast, and they won't be flexible. Fine. The rest of the week I ordered the full continental: tomatoes, cheese, fruit, yogurt, ham, and (oh yes) a croissant - I'll eat the croissant and you can dispose of the rest I guess - maliciously compliant I suppose, but unnecessary and wasteful. That was annoying, but the rest? Just an awful experience. On day two, we never got water or juice so we had to ask a manager about our drinks, we had to get up to hunt someone down for butter after they dropped off our food and scurried away, then again to get the bill, and finally yet once more to get the bill fixed because they forgot to comp the breakfast. Days three and four somehow got worse. It was frequently 10+ minutes before anyone appeared. When someone did show up, they acted annoyed that we needed anything at all. One day we timed it: 14 minutes before a single staff member came back to the floor after seating us. On the one day we did have plenty of time to sit; we thought we would order morning drinks but the espresso martini we got turned out to be so bad we literally could not drink it, and it obviously had no alcohol in it. Despite our having time to spare, the staff managed to take so long to serve us that we ended up just trying to get out and not even arguing about the drink we couldn't stomach, we just wanted someone...anyone, to come around so we could get our check and leave. This is not a large restaurant and there were always at least two servers and a manager on the floor, yet the place somehow felt completely abandoned. Every staff member, including management, seemed aggressively disinterested in the fact that this is a functioning restaurant where people expect basic service. The space itself looks nice, but that's about the only compliment I can give. You'd be better off paying for breakfast elsewhere, even if this place is "free." I want to add an updated note: the last two days everything was remarkably better, so much so that the entire experience was different and it honestly didn't feel like the same restaurant. If our experience had been this way the entire time, it would have easily been four, likely even five stars. Hopefully they were just unusually short staffed or something and our last two days is more representative of the normal experience you can expect here. They do have gluten free toast available, which is also a positive.

The owner (manager?) graciously checked in with us and we told him everything was wonderful! The interior is uplifting with lots of green plants, floor to ceiling windows, and white lamps. They have quite a bit of variety on the menu and it was difficult to choose but I finally decided on the sampler platter and my mom ordered a dish with black chickpeas. The black chickpeas are typically spicy but they toned it down for her and it was perfect. My sampler had six small dishes and a dessert with rice in the middle. Every dish was better than the last and the dessert was perfect, not too heavy. The service was very attentive, friendly. The restaurant seems very clean and had a cozy and comfortable ambience. I'm no longer in Montreal, I will return here when I am back and I have already told my Montreal friends they must try this place.
